Careers in Chiropractic:
Helping Athletes Perform
at the Top of Their Game

Many professional athletes depend on chiropractic care to enhance their performance, and the majority of professional sports teams even have a doctor of chiropractic on staff. The rigors of athletic competition can cause the bones of the spine to shift out of place or move improperly. The resulting vertebral subluxation interferes with the messages being carried throughout the body by the nervous system. Spinal adjustments help correct the misalignments and remove nerve interference to help athletes stay healthier and perform their best.

Sherman College equips students with the knowledge and techniques to help athletes, both professional and amateur, increase their competitive advantage, achieve optimal performance and stay healthy and injury-free.
  • Sherman College focuses on the interactions between nerves, muscles and vertebra of the spine to help athletes achieve optimal performance.
  • Sherman students can provide chiropractic care to athletes as part of their internship at the College’s on-campus Chiropractic Health Center.
  • Partnerships with nearby colleges give Sherman students the opportunity to provide on-site chiropractic care for student-athletes.
Showcase Sherman Weekend Welcomes Visitors, Guests

Sherman College kicked off its first Showcase Sherman Weekend for 2018 on February 9-10 with 70 guests at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg. Due to construction on campus, prospective students and their guests were invited to stay at the new hotel to further enjoy and explore Spartanburg each day after sessions ended. Attendees had an opportunity to visit the Sherman College campus for a tour and a palpation session, and they also enjoyed a trip to downtown Greenville’s Falls Park. View photos from the event.

Showcase Sherman Weekend is an event for prospective students to explore chiropractic and Sherman College and is designed to ignite students’ passion for leadership as well as help them begin their pursuit of becoming the next generation of DCs2B. Watch our video on Facebook to learn more about this fun weekend.

Our next Showcase Sherman Weekends for 2018 are scheduled for August 3-4, and November 2-3, and they will be held off campus at the AC Hotel in downtown Spartanburg during the campus expansion. Registration for August is open, but space is limited.

Why Sherman College?
Besides being the most complete chiropractic school, having a solid base in philosophy, science and art, Sherman College is the perfect place to feel like you are at home. You can feel the love and passion of every single person in the school and for me that is AMAZING.

Why Chiropractic?
Truthfully, chiropractic sort of fell into my lap. My best friend went to Sherman College and invited me to Lyceum. I immediately fell in love with the philosophy and mission of chiropractic. Chiropractors have the ability to help others and empower people to choose a healthier, happier life.

Understanding that our bodies have their own ability to heal is the key to being healthier. I chose a career in chiropractic because I want to bring hope back to the hopeless by educating the world on how amazing our body is and the importance of being subluxation free. CHIROPRACTIC IS LIFE.

Helping Students Reduce Stress

Sherman students often juggle a heavy class load, a busy home life and more. Recognizing the need to help students reduce their stress and anxiety, the college has begun offering several activities each quarter that focus on improving mental health.

The first two events that kicked off mental health awareness activities couldn’t have been more different from each other. First, the college hosted a yoga workshop with Adrienne Ables, who owns a downtown Spartanburg yoga studio. Ables gave students tips on stress management, diet and sleep exercises that can ward off stress. She also led them in an introduction to simple exercises that can be done even during class to fight stress, pointing out that something as simple as slowing down breathing can lead to a calmer outlook.

Then Student Affairs brought in a dozen dogs from Paws2Care for an activity called “Paws & Relax.” The timing couldn’t have been better – just before midterm exams. The response from students was overwhelming, and the union of students and dogs resulted in smiles all around. See our photo album on Facebook and check out the photos from our local newspaper.
Sherman Students Make
Valentine's Day Cards for Kids

When Assistant Professor of Clinical Sciences Kelly Miller, D.C., ’88, heard a request on the radio for “Cards for Kids,” she took quick action, knowing her students would be ready to lend a hand.

The Children’s Hospital at Greenville Health System had requested Valentine’s Day cards for children who would not be able to receive Valentines from their schools, family and friends due to health-related issues. Miller stopped at the store, picked up a few bags of craft supplies and headed to campus.

After reviewing for her upcoming midterm, Miller brought a welcome change of pace to her classroom – pulling out packages of stickers, construction paper, markers and other decorations. Her students immediately got to work making Valentines for children at a local hospital.

Lindsay Carature Portillo (pictured, bottom left) was among the students in Miller’s class to participate in the project. It was great to see everyone in class so engaged in creating beautiful cards for the kids, she said. Everyone wrote inspiring messages for the kids, but in doing that, I think it also inspired us.” Read more on our blog .
