LuncheonJune Luncheon: Fundraising Events & Major Gifts
M. Kent Stroman, CFRE
Thursday, June 8, 2017 | 11:30am - 1:150pm
Tulsa Garden Center

How do we get from one to the other?  Your fundraising events are successful - they raise money for your mission and help introduce people to your organization's great work.  (Or do they?)  They can also cost a lot to produce, take up significant staff/volunteer time, and leave you exhausted. In this workshop, you will learn how to determine if your fundraising events are truly cost-effective, and how you can use these events as a  way to fill your pipeline of prospective major donors.

MentoringMentoring Program Is Under Way
Tom Taylor, VP of Mentoring, stated that the first social "meet and greet" happened on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 for the mentor and mentees that signed up for this program.  It is another benefit to membership within the local chapter.  We have 24 participants for 2017, which is incredible! Mentors and mentees who not attend the initial social were connected in email so that can start to connect and meet for the remainder of this calendar year, 2017.  Taylor says if any new chapter members have joined since this was announced, to stay tuned for an early announcement in 2018 as the program starts over each year.

If you could go back and do one thing over in your career, what would it be and why?
This was a really hard question for me to answer, as there are probably several things I wish I would have learned about earlier or put  more focus on.  But after thinking on this for some time, I think the one thing I wish I could do over would be to enhance the emphasis regarding the importance of donor relationships and cultivation.  I spent a lot of my early career learning the logistics and semantics of development - grant writing do's and don'ts, ideal timeline of planning events, the psychology behind sponsorship levels, etc., when in reality, I feel the most important aspect of our jobs as development professionals should be to get to know our potential and current donors.  Learning about their interest in our organization, what motivates them, what inspires them.  And most importantly is to LISTEN to them.  And take what you have heard and learned, to put together  stewardship plan and solicitation strategy that meets their needs as much as it meets the organization needs.
