Loving like Jesus - by Kelley Stokesbary
"By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another."
While the command to love like Jesus is enormous, God's grace makes it possible. So what does it mean to "love like Jesus?"

  • 1. Love does not discriminate. Jesus didn't surround himself with the most popular or powerful people of his time. He spent time with people from the fringe of society - the outcasts, the downtrodden. This means that I need to love people who aren't like me. I need to love people whose life experiences aren't like mine and whose understanding isn't like mine.

  • 2. Care must be tangible. Offering care can't be done through words. Talking about your compassionate heart isn't the same as caring. Actions provide care. Jesus acted on his love for others. What actions are you taking to show your love and care for people in our community?

  • 3. Make time for people. Jesus was a busy, busy man, but he always had time for people. When the woman touched his coat, he responded. Jesus was unselfish. It's easy in this era of busyness to forget to stop and care for people. We must remember, though, that we have to stop (or at least slow down) to be truly present and attentive to those in need.

When we demonstrate kindness, patience, and gentleness, we are loving like Jesus. When we speak for the oppressed, feed the hungry, and house the homeless, we love like Jesus. Loving isn't just a theory or a feeling. It's a conscientious decision that requires action. How will you be a servant who loves like Jesus? What action will you take?

How does an organization called Love In the Name of Christ live up to that beautiful name? The Bible says we can be known as Jesus’ disciples by showing love for one another.  How does Love INC of Eastern Carver County do that? We start by showing love in working together as churches from twelve different denominations. Uniting Christians from such a wide range of convictions can hit some serious snags, but at Love INC, we are blessed with leaders in our churches who show humility and forbearance for each other in so many ways that allow the love of Jesus to shine through. We also show love for one another through our service to our neighbors in need.  We feed the hungry, fill empty homes with furniture, provide guidance to the bewildered, and pray with and for those Jesus loves the most.

One of our loving community leaders gave me the following prayer to encourage me and everyone in our churches who serve those in need as a way to serve Jesus (see Matthew 25:35-40). Please join me in this prayer:

Father, at this time, when more and more people are facing challenges in their lives including hunger and homelessness please demonstrate to them that as believers of Jesus Christ we care and will work to support those without hope because you are our Savior. You are the risen Christ that gives hope to all. You only can guide our hearts and minds to shine the light of Jesus Christ and bring them comfort on those that today live in the shadows of life; the sick, the needy, and the disabled.

It is only thru you that we know we can come together as one community with hope, respect, and dignity for all. Let us, as believers of Christ, demonstrate that we care and we will work in your name to reach out and bring comfort and hope to those that today don't know what to do, or where to turn. We will reach out with the heart of our risen Savior to shine the light of the world so he that follows will not walk in darkness but will have the glorious light of Jesus Christ shine upon them. Lord, God Almighty guide us in all we do, in all our actions that they follow your word and direction to care and reach out to those with little, to those in need. We ask this all in your glorious and holy name.   Amen.

God Bless,

Backpack Give Back Ministry
Discovery United Methodist Church & Love INC have partnered again this year to provide backpacks and school supplies to children for the upcoming 2017/2018 school year.  We've set a lofty goal this year of distributing 1000 backpacks to students in need!

We are now accepting donations of school supplies to go in the backpacks. Items vary from crayons and gluesticks for elementary students to calculators and compasses for the high school students.

This is a great way for individuals, families, service organizations, VBS, youth groups, and congregations to give back to the community.

Donations should be dropped off at Discovery United Methodist Church in Chanhassen by August 7th. Stay tuned for sign-ups to help stuff backpacks!
Want to refer a family in need to our Backpack Give Back Ministry?

Children enrolled in pre-kindergarten through high school are eligible to receive a backpack and school supplies. Students MUST LIVE within the Eastern Carver County (District 112) school district boundaries (Carver, Chanhassen, Chaska, or Victoria), but do not have to attend a school within District 112 (i.e., can attend private school or may attend a school outside of District 112).

Backpacks and school supplies will be available for pick-up on the following dates at Discovery United Methodist Church, located at 275 Lake Drive E., Chanhassen, MN 55317.

Backpacks and supplies must be picked up on the following dates. Alternate arrangements are not available.

  • Friday, August 18th, 6 – 8 PM
  • Saturday, August 19th, 11 AM – 2 PM

The Summer Lunch Program, a partnership between District 112 and Love INC, has begun! Monday through Friday, children 0-18 can receive a free lunch at the Community Pavilion in Riverview Terrace. As the summer progresses, we will be incorporating activities after lunch, as well.  If you'd like to help us coordinate activities for after lunch, let us know!

The school district is providing the lunch and assisting with activities. Love INC is providing volunteers to help children open packages and to provide supervision during lunch. We are also assisting with the activity planning and supervision.
This is a great opportunity for individuals, families,  businesses, and youth groups to donate a small amount of time that offers a HUGE impact for these children!

Volunteers are needed every Monday through Friday through September 1st (excluding July 3rd and 4th). Volunteers meet at 12:15 pm, children start arriving for lunch at 12:30 pm, and activities are usually wrapped up between 1:30 - 2 pm.

Help us make sure this is a #HungerFreeSummer for these children!

Chaska River City Days Pancake Breakfast
The River City Days Pancake Breakfast will be held on Sunday, July 30th under the tent on Walnut Street at Chaska City Square Park in downtown Chaska.

Breakfast will include  delicious hot  pancakes, sausage, real fruit toppings, orange juice and coffee prepared by Chef Bob DeMaris and crew.  Proceeds from the event will support Love INC, so stop by and enjoy breakfast with us!

We are also looking for volunteers to help that morning. Two shifts are available and duties include serving as cashier, helping clear tables, and serving food.
Ministry Needs
Urgent Need for Queen Sheets at the Linen Closet

The Linen Closet at Chaska Moravian Church is in desperate need of queen sheet sets. Imagine receiving your bed and being excited to finally sleep in it, only to be told that you'll have to wait for sheets to fit it. Disappointing, to say the least.

Help us make sure our clients are able to  enjoy a good night's rest. If you have queen sheets (new or gently used) you would like to donate, please drop them off at Chaska Moravian Church in downtown Chaska, Monday through Friday, 9 am - 2 pm. Thank you!

  • The Personal Care Ministry is running low on toilet paper. Any variety and any count is welcomed!
  • Our Gas Card Ministry is low on gas cards. Gas cards are given to clients who need them for transportation to doctor's appointments, job interviews, and transportation to work or school. Gas cards for any local gas station in the amount of $25 or $30 would be appreciated.

If you can help us with either of these items, please drop them off at the Love INC office (1600 Bavaria Road, Chaska) anytime Monday - Friday, 9 am - 2 pm. If you need to make alternate arrangements for drop-off, please call us at (952) 448-2508.

As you can imagine, running an organization with multiple ongoing ministries requires a significant number of volunteers! In addition to our ongoing ministries, we also have various events and one-time opportunities to serve within Love INC.

Volunteer opportunities vary and may include, but are not limited to:
  • Helping in our FurniShare ministry with delivering furniture or manning the retail store.
  • Delivering household cleaning products to clients in need.
  • Serving on the planning committee for fundraising events and activities.
  • Assisting in the office with data entry, bulk mailings, or general administrative duties.
  • Answering phones and assisting clients in our Clearinghouse.
  • and many more!

Whatever your talent or skill set, odds are favorable we've got a place where we could use you! If you'd like to get plugged in to Love INC as a volunteer, please take a few minutes to complete our Volunteer Interest Form
