Kearny Water Diversions In Danger Of Cut Off
| |
According to a letter sent to the Town of Kearny from the Gila Water Commissioner (GWC) the Town of Kearny could be cut off from using water diverted from the Gila River as soon as May 2012.
The letter states that each year the GWC determines the apportionment of water to those parties who are entitled to use water from the Gila River. These apportionments are determined by how much water is available for release from the San Carlos Reservoir as defined from the Gila Decree and Court orders. The letter also indicates that if more water becomes available during the year the GWC may make additional apportionments as appropriate.
On January 1, 2012 the GWC Commissioner Jon Allred made an apportionment to the Town of Kearny in the amount of 11,332 acre feet. The Town is entitled to .0383 acre feet of water per acre of land. In February of 2012 based on the water stored and available for release from the San Carlos Reservoir the town was allocated an additional apportionment of 7,724 acre feet of water. This amount was determined based on the acreage upon which the Towns water right is based. The letter which was dated April 5, 2012 also states that the GWC has not determined how much water the Town has used through the month of March. [Read full story]

Superior Little League Season In Full Swing
|
 | |
Superior League Little
|
The 2012 Superior Little League season got off to a good start five weeks ago with the early start of the t-ball season. League officials had decided to start the t-ball season in advance of the older leagues to allow each team enough time to play the required games. With 17 teams in the league this season it was necessary to start the season early.
On Monday, April 16, while the T-Ballers were celebrating the end of their season, the boys and girls Minor, Majors and Junior League Baseball and Softball Teams were celebrating their opening day. The celebrations began with the annual Little League opening day parade on Main St. This year the grand marshals for the parade were the 2011 9 &10 year old all stars who won the Little League District Championship last year. Also recognized as grand marshals were the girls softball all stars who won the Little League District Championship.
Following the parade the opening day ceremony began at the field with all the teams being announced and the T-Ballers receiving their end of season awards. The first game of the season was a boys Major League game with the Diamond Backs playing the Yankees.
Little League games will continue to be played Monday through Friday through June 15, 2012. Games are played at 5:30 and 7:30 each night. Games will not be held on April 25, May 8 and 9 or the week of graduation, May 21-28. Superior Little League will also be playing teams from Apache Junction, Florence and Globe both here in Superior and away.
Each day during the season the Little League needs at least eight to 15 volunteers. From umpires, pitch counters, announcers and concession workers there is always a task for everyone. For more information on the Superior Little League [Read full story]

Republic Plastics Building In San Manuel For Sale
|
 | | Republic Plastics Fire From Two Years Ago |
It's been just over two years since a three-alarm fire ripped through the Republic Plastics building in San Manuel. It took more than two days to fight the fire, which sent two to hospitals in Tucson.
The building wasn't a total loss. The fire affected only half of the building and rather than rebuilding it, owner Gino Inman elected to demolish the damaged portion, reducing it to a concrete pad.
Republic Plastics relocated its processing plant to Eloy, leaving a gaping hole in the San Manuel and Tri-Community economy.
But what is next for the building?
The building includes a 110,000 square foot metal building with a 100,000 square foot concrete pad. It has a 2,500 square foot office space, loading docks for up to 10 semi-trucks and access to rail (with the addition of a switch line). It is zoned heavy industrial and can be used for any industrial use: distribution, manufacturing or storage.
"County zoning is really flexible," said Pinal County Economic Development Program Manager Tim Kanavel.
It was originally designed for storing copper anodes and can handle very heavy loads.
Realtor Brandon Rodgers, who is an industrial properties specialist with PICOR Commercial Real Estate Services, feels the building would make a great distribution center, but Kanavel just wants to see the building sold and utilized, bringing new jobs to the Tri-Community. [Read full story]

Young Musician Entertains Oracle Art Fans
|
 | | Hadji Banjovi Plays Banjo |
The Triangle L Ranch was part of the Oracle Studio Art Tour this weekend. Sharon Holnback was displaying her photographs, spirit bottles, glass and metal sculptures.
On Sunday a small group of people touring the ranch got to see a young musician display his talent. The approving crowd enjoyed a wonderful little show.
Eight year old Tarkel Price played ukulele and sang while his father Leonard Price played guitar and Hadji Banjovi played a homemade string bass. The Price family came from Seattle, Washington, to Oracle to visit their friend Hadji.
Tarkel says he has been performing for almost two years. They have played at farmers markets and fairs in the Seattle area. He said he has never had stage fright and even played in front of a crowd of 2,000. Tarkel's dad, Leonard plays in a band in Seattle called the Floyd Mountain Boys. They have also played in Tucson. At press time, Copper prices closed at $3.61 a pound. This reflected a two-cent decrease.
This week the Florence Copper Project and ASU released their economic study and Rosemont Copper announced that they received the needed Aquifer Protection Permit; it was issued to Augusta Resources from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality.
Curis - Florence Copper Project
Arizona State University (ASU) released a comprehensive socioeconomic study of Florence Copper. Florence Copper Project: Economic Impact Study details an impressive case of lasting economic value, including new job creation, wage increases and new private-sector business growth and investment in Arizona. The study reported overwhelmingly positive conclusions that Florence Copper would bring over $2.2 billion in new economic activity to Arizona over the next 28 years.
"The ASU Economic Impact Study is a sophisticated, independent third party review of the overall economic, employment, business and public benefits to be generated by Florence Copper," said Michael McPhie, president of Curis Resources.
