We are so proud of the achievements of our MSS alumni! We have much to celebrate!

December 2016

I know there has been a long silence in terms of the Alumni E-News, but I am back on board and ready to catch you up with the many wonderful things that our alumni have been doing as well as other news from MSS.

While I'm running way behind, David Dorsey (MSS 2010), is running faster than just about anyone in the Philly area. David, a junior English major at St. Joseph's in Philadelphia, was named to the 2016 Philadelphia Inquirer Men's Cross Country Academic All Area Team. To qualify for this honor, a student must excel athletically while also maintaining a 3.2 GPA and contributing to the surrounding community. Last year, David was the only sophomore named to the 2015 team!

Mother Seton School nurtures the faith of her students, supporting them as they develop into young people with strong values and clear moral standards. It is especially exciting when one of our students decides to pursue their faith as their vocation. Jacob Lyons (MSS 2012), a member of Our Lady of Mount Carmel parish, has entered the seminary at the St. John Paul II Seminary in Washington, D.C. We are proud of Jacob and hope you will pray for him as he pursues his vocational studies.

We wake up each morning never knowing how the day will play out. On July 15, 2016, Patrick Van Der Cruyssen (MSS 2011) woke up and went to his job as a lifeguard at Cunningham Falls State Park. Hours later, he was part of a team that saved the life of a 5 year old girl who was discovered floating lifelessly in about 5 feet of water. Patrick, his co-lifeguard and two park visitors gave the girl CPR for 12 minutes, and successfully saved her life. He was honored in late August by the Maryland Park Service for his quick response and life-saving actions. Congratulations, Patrick--it's not every day that you help save someone's life!

This will be the first Christmas I celebrate without my mom. We were blessed to have her with us for 95 years, mentally alert and fully participating in life. In addition, my mother-in-law, Marge Ruthenberg, died right before Thanksgiving at age 90. We will feel the absence of these two wonderful women especially at Christmas. So this E-News I'm ending with advice that we all know, but sometimes forget to follow: make your holidays about family and faith. Merry Christmas to all, and may your New Year be filled with peace and joy.

P.S. Welcome new MSS families! Even though your student isn't an MSS alum yet, we include you in this e-newsletter so that you can see how far and wide our alumni have traveled and share in their good news.

Tommy Laudani (MSS 2014), currently a junior at Delone High School, has been diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of cancer known as DSRCT. Tommy is undergoing treatment at Johns Hopkins. Tommy, his older brother Bobby, and his parents have been part of the MSS community for many years.

Please pray for them during this very challenging time, and if you would like to do something in addition to prayers, please consider donating gas cards or food cards to the family. You can contact Jen Buchheister in the MSS Advancement Office at 301-447-3165 for more info.
