Knauss  Homestead Happenings
Over 200 years of Emmaus History

The Knauss Homestead Happenings
As the Christmas Season fast approaches and with it the celebration of an "Old Fashioned Christmas" it is such a joy to have a slice, a small one at that, of Americana here in Emmaus.
For those of us lucky to remember the Emmaus of years ago  I offer a few nostalgic memories. The 5 and 10 on the corner of 4 th and Chestnut, Dundore's and John Gould Pharmacies, the Dundore's Luncheonette, and the Emmaus Hobby Shop just to name a few. They where places where we all frequented and met our neighbors. We get to reflect on a time when we knew our neighbors, talked to each other, when doors remained unlocked and shortly after Thanksgiving we started to decorate for Christmas. C-9 lights and foil doors adorned the exterior of our homes. The Christmas tree was purchased at the local lot and decorated with C-6 lights, lead tinsel, leaded glass balls and of course the Lionel train running under the tree on the Christmas putz.
Life was simple then, no internet, cell phones, twitter or Facebook to distract us. There was no 24 hour news cycle, never ending sports or the weather channel to tell us of the impending storm ,each portrayed as the "storm of the century" We didn't lock our doors, we talked to our neighbors, and listened in on conversations over "the party line".
Emmaus has changed a lot and yet not much at all. Well maybe just a little. Gone are the stores we remember and we now shop over the internet. Yet despite all of these changes Emmaus still comes together to celebrate "Old Fashioned Christmas". This year the date to remember is Dec. 2 nd.
We will gather at the Triangle for the lighting of the community Christmas tree, sing carols and welcome Santa and Mrs. Clause. For those interested in history we will tour the historic homes, The Shelter House, 1803 House and the Knauss Homestead.
Each of the historic homes reflects upon a time when there were no distractions and  Christmas was celebrated with a great deal of solemnity and reverence.  Children went into the woods and gathered moss, stones and other plant material awaiting their Father's creative talents to create a putz depicting the journey of Mary and Joseph and the birth of the Christ Child.
Long before the Christmas tree as we know it made its first appearance in early America the Moravians of Bethlehem introduced a "Pyramid Tree" made of brush wood adorned with Bible verses and treats for the children. The children would return from church services to a "Christmas Putz" and the Pyramid Tree".
Please stop by and visit the Knauss Homestead as part of your "Old Fashioned Christmas" celebration to see a late 18 th century putz and Pyramid Tree and experience the start of the Holiday with refreshments and treats in a setting that  portrays the celebration of the Holiday in an 18 th century setting.
The officers and board of the Knauss Homestead Preservation Society wish all of you a Very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Please visit our web site and like us on Facebook.

It's Fall Invader Season
Cooler weather is coming. Stink Bugs, Lady Bugs, Boxelder Bugs. This is the time of year these insects are drawn to your home to find a place to hide during the cooler nights. Spiders are drawn to the same areas to catch these other insects. Tired of walking through spider webs every morning? Stink bugs popping up on the windows, door or exterior? We can help.  EnviroTech Pest Services can provide a safe and effective exterior application to drastically reduce the number of these insects and spiders that could populate your home or business.
Ticks have been very bad this year. Concerned with Lyme disease? And exterior application done this fall can help protect your family and pets from ticks.
