Chapter's Annual Fund Raising Drive
Gets Underway On Veterans' Day

Once again Jensen's Markets in Palm Springs and Palm Desert will be the focal points of our Chapter's fund raising drive to raise money for holiday dinners for Marine families residing at the Marine Base in Twenty-nine palms.

The drive will kickoff on November 11, Veterans' Day.  Last year, through our volunteer efforts, we were able to provide 175 boxes of holiday meals to Marine families.

Each box contains eight fully prepared turkey or ham dinners.
Our success relies totally on the volunteer efforts of Chapter members who stand a two hour watch at Jensen's during the duration our fund raising drive.

Be a part of this mission! Volunteer!
TALES FROM THE TUN TAVERN

DID YOU KNOW...

The first amphibious landing in Marine Corps history came on March 3, 1776, when a force under Captain Samuel Nicholas stormed the beaches of the British-held island of New Providence in the Bahamas. The 220 Marines had journeyed to the Caribbean with a Continental Navy flotilla in search of military supplies. After landing unopposed near Nassau, they captured the town and took possession of its two forts, both of which surrendered after a token resistance. New Providence's British governor managed to ship more than 150 barrels of gunpowder out of the town before the Marines arrived, but Nicholas and his band successfully seized several brass cannons and mortars that were later put to use by George Washington's Continental Army.
(editor's note: There is no accounting for the 100 barrels of rum reportedly seized by Nicholas's Marines.)
