On our Safer Streets remarks here, I am worried about how civil disturbance plays in the agenda against our interests. As I have observed before, these incidents are often a prelude to the political crackdowns to come.
Crackdowns do not diminish rioting, they react to riots with
policy change, and this is a sweeping influence on all citizens.
Crackdowns never address the forces hostile to the community, they are crafted to lie in wait for the total citizenry. Crackdowns have evolved over time to address criminals less and to address everyone more. Crackdowns depend on criminal activity to justify their policy change.
What do we do about them?
We document them.
Remember that the safety of our streets is an indicator of the overall health of our self-rule. Remember that the disturbances may be mild compared to the crackdown they justify.

The prosecution of Harold Fish reignited the debate over self-defense laws in America. For those not familiar with the story, Mr. Fish was convicted in Coconino County, Arizona of 2nd degree murder despite staying on site and rendering aid after being forced to shoot a violent attacker.
