GARLIC HEADED WEED DOL LMAKING

Join Catiya Gainor and f ashion a Corn Doll from objects found on the island. Traditional corn dolls are created at the end of the season as in the Celtic tradition to take the last bloom of summer which are brought into the house to remind us on the dark days that summer will come again.
Bring favorite scraps, buttons,  and ribbon for sentimental and artistic value.

BARBARA BENTLEY SPEAKS ABOUT CHANGING TIMES, CHANGING GARDENS 
(Wednesday, December 12, 10:30 am @ Orcas Center) 
Barbara focuses on ecological interactions-usually from a plant's point of view. In the last phase of her research, she investigated the effects of global change on plant-insect interactions. Additionally, she is passionately interested in science education, with an emphasis on the different processes of science. She welcomes opportunities to present her work, as a scientist and teacher, to a wide diversity of audiences. After the presentation, visitors are encouraged to stop by our membership table and become a member of the garden club and to enjoy treats in the social hour following the meeting.

COMMUNITY HERO PROGRAM LOGO/ARTWORK CONTEST

Orcas Food Co-op is calling on our island community to contribute artwork that could be created into a logo to symboliz e our Community Hero Program.  Winner will receive $100 co-op gift certificate, a $100 donation to the Community Hero Program recipient of your choice as well as design recognition!   Art Specifications:  Send your art submission in a refined form (Photo, JPEG, PDF, ID or AI file) with a limit of 3-4 colors (we prefer artwork in colors that match our current color palette)  to  marketing@orcasfood.coop .

Orcas Food Co-opIn the islands, we are more vulnerable to unplanned power outages. During the darkest days, we want our Co-op to be a community hub and sanctuary, a warm place for people to meet and gather, share resources, plug in cell-phones and other devices, and of course eat healthy and delicious food. With a new generator, we can even host Game Night upstairs when the power goes out.  One of our committed Member-Owners has stepped up to offer a $5K matching donation to support the Generator Fund! That means every dollar that is contributed right now has double the impact.

PURCHASE ARTISAN SALMON AT CROW VALLEY GALLERY TO SUPPORT ORCA 
Crow Valley Galley, local artist Esther Clark, and Friends of the San Juans have partnered to protect what we love!  Purchase one of a kind, locally-made artisan salmon by Esther Clark at Crow Valley Gallery. The ceramic salmon are $250 and Friends of the San Juans will receive a portion of the profits to support our Orca Protection Fund.  Esther Clark is a locally grown Northwest Native, born and raised sailing and hiking in the northwest. Esther hopes this project will inspire an impact of preservation of the salmon for generations to come. Esther Clark lives and works on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands.

DECEMBER AND JANUARY ART EXHIBIT AT ORCAS CENTER

The Visual Arts Committee (VAC) is responsible for creating a gallery-like atmosphere in the lobby and the Madrona Room, providing beautiful and interesting art every month. For two months the members of the VAC take the opportunity to exhibit their own art. The current members of the VAC are; Mary Jane Elgin, Joan Fletcher, Marilee Holm, Ann Jones, Rick Jones, Vanessa Julian, Peg Laycock, Heidi Lindberg, Pat Littlewood, Janis Mattox, Leon Rosenblatt, Nina Sahlin and Kathy Youngren. PATOS ISLAND LIGHTHOUSE EXHIBIT
(Until March 30, 12:00-3:00 pm @ Orcas Island Historical Museum)
Don't miss our winter exhibit on the history of Patos Island lighthouse from its inception in 1893 through its automation in 1974, then the rehabilitation in 2008 by the Bureau of Land Management.
Curated by and in partnership with  Keepers of Patos Light , this exhibit was on display this summer on Patos and will be available on Orcas until March 2019. It has been expanded to include items in the Museum's collection that have never been displayed before including the Patos Island Visitor's Register. Admission by donation.

THE ORCAS ISLAND ARTWORKS 
The Orcas Island Artworks Gallery is a favorite Orcas destination housed in a historic building on the island's East side. Built in 1938 as a strawberry barreling plant, the lovingly restored landmark now showcases the best of our island's crafts and fine arts. Open daily from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm.
