Dear #AskJackieAnything,

I'm in my 20's (closer to 30's) and I see all of my peers starting indie craft businesses, working for startups, selling vintage goods, opening funky food trucks or moving to Seattle/Portland/Denver/Brooklyn and I don't know if I am missing out by staying in the town I went to school in and working in the job I have. What would you do?

Dear Missing Out Girl,

It sounds like you spend a lot of time online looking at all the shiny pictures that people post about their awesome lives.

Stop it.

It sounds like you are starting your life where you want to start it. That's cool. Why do you need to be somewhere else? Do you really think that it is way better wherever you are thinking of going? Like all of a sudden you get invited to all the cool parties, have an amazing wardrobe, meet a photographer that wants to feature you on Instagram and are also now rolling in cash?

It MIGHT be cooler to live in a place where there are more people your age, but it might just be another place that is like any other place. You might land some great gig or do a Go Fund Me account to open your vegan sushi taco truck, but you might not. You might end up sleeping on a friends couch until you find a job that pays actual bills.

Here's the thing. If you need to experience more new things you should go. If that is going to give you life experiences that you can add to your story; it  might   be  worth it. But, and you KNEW there was a but, don't go thinking that you are leaving who you are and becoming someone new because it doesn't work that way. You bring all the same problems wherever you live and the same opportunities.

If you are feeling really blah about your day to day I offer three things that you can do right now:

  • Get offline for a weekend. Seriously, do things instead of watching things. You can photograph it to share later, but right now do things that will help you re-fall in love with where you live right now.
  • Start a side hustle. Do something that might bring in a little bit of cash that you are passionate about. Devote real time/resources to this for a while to reap the difference it makes. Need help figuring out what that is?
  • Write everyday or photograph something everyday. Documenting your now will help you see how you really feel about where you are.
Start loving the life you have. If you STILL hate it start making real plans to go somewhere else. xo - Jackie, who wants everyone to find their place

Last week on the blog I talked about KonMari decluttering (are you into this cult like cleaning?), tips for creating marketing content everyday,  and a round up of how to use Periscope. I also updated my ongoing list of free stock photography resources.

Do you have a question, it can be about anything, that you'd like an answer or opinion on? Email me and ask away!
