The South Carolina State Library honors veterans with handmade Quilts of Valor. In partnership with the South Carolina chapter of the Quilts of Valor Foundation, the library will host a rotating exhibit of the quilts created by hundreds of volunteers. Veterans receive these awards in recognition of their service, sacrifice, and valor.  Quilts are on display from November 1, 2018 to January 9, 2019. Quilters will assemble quilts in the Sew Day Workshop on November 7 from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Veterans receive their personalized quilts as part of  six ceremonies  scheduled throughout the exhibit.

An upcoming workshop provides strategies to make your library more culturally responsive and welcoming to a broader community. On November 7, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, an early childhood dual language specialist hosts a workshop at the Aiken County Library. She will detail ways to promote literacy among children who come from homes where English is not the primary language. You will also learn which publishers and agencies specialize in materials and services for diverse learners.  Register today and create a better connection with the families you serve.

Join us from noon to 1:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 8 for this month's author talk and book signing, featuring  No Ordinary Soldier: My Father's Two Wars  by Liz Gilmore Williams. In this true story, a young man from a gritty Pennsylvania mill town enlists in the Army Air Corps and heads for Hawaii. Amid air raids, stifling heat, and outbreaks of tropical disease, he clings to sanity through the letters he and his wife share. Years later his daughter finds these letters saved in an attic. The discovery leads her to a shocking family secret and reveals a story of war, love, and forgiveness.  Speaker @ the Center is FREE and open to the public. Register to reserve your seat.
