July 2016

Summer is in full swing and we hope you'll join the USC School of Social Work at two alumni events in August--the 3rd Annual TrojanFest, and the USC Alumni Club of South Orange County's CaddySChack event.

We are also preparing to welcome the first cohort of students in our new Doctor of Social Work (DSW) online degree program. We are thrilled to offer this new opportunity for social workers to make an impact. Read on for more about the latest research, alumni benefits and more!
Latest  Research

In the Summer 2016 issue of  Hamovitch PI, read about four PhD students who have secured highly competitive federal grants from the National Institutes of Health. Plus, get acquainted with three new assistant professors joining the USC School of Social Work this fall who bring a diversity of  expertise in child and youth development, neuroscience, psychology and vulnerable populations from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Notable Alumni

Thirteen years ago, Nils de Mol van Otterloo (MSW '15) never imagined that he'd have the title of Fulbright scholar on his resume, let alone a career in social work. This fall, after a decade-long recovery from a traumatic brain injury, he will study in India as the first Fulbright scholar alumnus from the USC School of Social Work, exploring the efficacy of musical reminiscence therapy in dementia care.

USC Weekenders

Join the USC Alumni Association to cheer on the Men of Troy at away games during the Fall 2016 football season! The Association offers exclusive area hotel deals, full travel packages, and individual tailgate tickets. In this season's away games, our team will face the reigning national champion Alabama Crimson Tide in Texas, the Stanford Cardinals in Palo Alto, the Utah Utes in Salt Lake City, the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson, and the Washington Huskies in Seattle.
Trauma and Youth

The Social Work Alumni Association partnered with the NASW USC Unit to examine trauma informed communities this past March. USC alumni, students, faculty, staff and members of the Trauma Informed Care Task Force of Greater LA heard from local experts about the impact of trauma on youth and strategies for advocacy.

Introducing Our New Doctor of Social Work

The USC School of Social Work is now accepting applications for its new online Doctor of Social Work (DSW) degree, which prepares scholar-practitioners to create innovative solutions for real-world problems. Our goal is to bring social workers into the greater public discourse as they explore ways to create a stronger, fairer society and ensure basic human rights for people everywhere.

The DSW@USC offers students  from a range of professional backgrounds the unique opportunity to focus on management, leadership and innovation as they develop an actionable solution to one of the 12 Grand Challenges for Social Work, an initiative by the American Academy of Social Work and Social Welfare, to tackle the nation's toughest social problems.  Each challenge is tied to issues - social justice, family and child welfare and concerns for our social fabric - that drive social workers every day. Students meet these challenges head on with coursework, residencies and a capstone dedicated to finding a viable solution to one of the challenges.

Unlike a PhD in social work, which prepares scholars for careers in research and the professoriate, the DSW@USC is a part-time, online advanced practice degree program for working professionals who want to have a greater impact in their practice. Graduates of the program will be positioned to participate in and lead conversations to find break-through solutions for social change at the highest levels.

Read more about what the DSW@USC program will prepare graduates to accomplish in our informative Q&A with program chair and former director of the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health, Dr. Marvin Southard.
