N.J. puts brakes on road projects
 
Work at hundreds of construction sites across New Jersey, including 165 sites in Bergen and Passaic counties, will grind to a halt at 11:59 p.m. Friday because of the continued failure by Governor Christie and state legislators to find money for transportation projects, acting Gov. Kim Guadagno said Wednesday. The projects will be closed for "at least seven days," Guadagno said.


Edgewater Superfund work to start in fall

Preliminary work on a $78 million project that would entomb a century's worth of underground pollution at the Quanta Superfund site will begin in late September.The start date comes almost five years after the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced the controversial plan to keep tons of coal tar, PCBs, arsenic and other contaminants at the 5 1/2-acre site off River Road instead of removing them, as many residents wanted.

NAR Testifies on Flood Insurance

On June 30, 2016, Vice Chair David McKey of NAR's Insurance Committee testified on the small business impacts of inaccurate flood insurance rate increases. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is up for renewal next year, and must be reauthorized before September 30, 2017 in order to continue providing flood insurance in 22,000 communities nationwide where required for a federally related mortgage.

Buyer Education and Counseling Is Homeownership Cornerstone, New Study Says

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) recently published early findings from a rigorous, large-scale, random assignment study on the benefits that housing education and counseling provides to first-time homebuyers.
