To cap off National Small Business Week, President Obama and senior Administration officials will join Business Forward's nationwide network of business leaders to discuss the role of small business in growing the American economy. The discussion will focus on key economic initiatives, including the Trans-Pacific Partnership.  In addition to hearing from the President, business leaders from across the country will have the opportunity to ask questions of Administration officials about how various economic policies affect their companies, employees, and local economies.

The team at InformationStation.org, a project of Job Creators Network, remind us that a celebration for National Small Business Week, an annual celebration of the country's small business entrepreneurs, is indeed deserved. Small businesses tirelessly work to provide us with the products we want for the lowest prices possible... but the events and discussions around the week also provide the impetus to discuss needs, concerns and challenges that sometimes prevent small businesses from thriving or even surviving. Education and Workforce
The GlobalMindED conference on Access, Equity and Opportunity is June 9 and 10 in downtown DenverEducational leaders from 20+countries, eight national foundations, ten college presidents, and  thirty five non-profit/government partners will be featured. Attendees will have the opportunity to network and learn from the greatest educational leaders in the U.S and the world while contributing their own best practices to support a diverse, capable pipeline. 

Additionally, 100 first-generation to college students will participate in design-thinking, rapid prototyping, networking and pathways to entrepreneurship sponsored by Camelback Ventures, Village Capitol and other funders who support minority and women owned start-ups. The speakers so far include representatives from Google, Microsoft, American Indian College Fund, Gallup and others. Learn more at www.globalminded.org.  
Health and Retirement
The Colorado Innovation Network (COIN) and LiveWell Colorado announced this week the ten finalists for the nation's first-ever statewide innovation challenge Imagine Colorado. Over 75 teams from 19 Colorado counties submitted videos on how to connect our state's youth to a healthier lifestyle. The ideas addressed issues such as Colorado's growing childhood obesity rate and food desert challenges, and included unique ways to encourage physical activity and provide all Coloradans access to our Rocky Mountains.

The 10 finalists will pitch their ideas in front of a panel of local celebrity judges, including Colorado Chief Innovation Officer Erik Mitisek and Colorado Rapids Player Dillon Powers, at the Ideas Showcase finale event on May 17 from 4-8 p.m. at the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.  A live audience will vote to determine who will win the $25,000 in cash prizes, and Gov. John Hickenlooper will be in attendance to present the awards.All Coloradans are invited to attend. Read more
Energy and Environment
Business Roundtable welcomed last month's Senate passage of S. 2012, the Energy Policy Modernization Act of 2015, which was advanced through the efforts of Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Chairman Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Ranking Member Maria Cantwell (D-WA). In welcoming the bipartisan Senate passage of S. 2012, the  Energy Policy Modernization Act, Business Roundtable noted that many of its provisions reflect recommendations made in the BRT's report,  Powering Forward: North America's Energy Resurgence. BRT stressed  its willingness to work with Congress to enact legislation for an effective national energy strategy.

 
In addition to the op-ed shared below, we would like to report that last week, the South Metro WISE Authority received a 2016 Metro Vision Award from the Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) for The WISE project. The award was presented by Elise Jones, DRCOG Chair and Chair of the Boulder County Board of Commissioners, at DRCOG's Annual Awards celebration, held April 27 at the Westin DIA.  The Water Infrastructure and Supply Efficiency Partnership (WISE) is a regional water supply project between Aurora Water, Denver Water and members of the South Metro Water Supply Authority. First conceived in 2008, the partnership combines water supplies and system capacities to create a sustainable new water supply for the region.  Read more

The Water Infrastructure and Supply Efficiency (WISE) project is a major component of first-of-its kind collaboration among the Denver Metro area's three major water entities and for the unprecedented statewide the project has received.  Taken together, WISE provides a model for the type of regional and statewide cooperation called for in the recently finalized statewide water plan.   Read more

Statement from Agriculture Secretary on the Signing of the Paris Climate Agreement On April 22 , Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack  released  a statement on the signing of the Paris Climate Agreement.  Secretary Vilsack referred to the signing as "moving forward on our commitment to take real action on climate change."

Interior Department Takes Next Step in Comprehensive Review of Federal Coal ProgramOn April 26, the Bureau of Land Management announced the dates and locations of a series of public meetings in May and June.  These meetings will provide the public with opportunities to help the BLM identify and evaluate potential reforms to the federal coal program. 

Need, Opportunity to Boost American Oil and Gas Development in Low Price EnvironmentOn April 26, Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), in her opening statement, called the current low price environment surrounding oil and gas development an opportunity to pursue federal reforms that will boost energy production and provide economic benefits across the nation.

Full Committee Clears Bipartisan Pipeline Safety BillOn April 27th, the Energy and Commerce Committee unanimously passed H.R. 5050, the Pipeline Safety Act of 2016.

Federal Regulatory Process Clouds Renewable Energy Growth: On April 27, the Subcommittee on Water, Power and Oceans held an oversight hearing to examine the limited growth of hydropower and barriers to expansion.
