The Newberry County Master Gardeners Association is pleased to announce the availability of a  $1000 scholarship award for the 2018 - 2019 academic year.  Eligible candidates for this scholarship include high school seniors as well as college level students with a good academic record who are pursuing a degree in horticulture, agriculture, food science, forestry or a related field.

Newberry county residents will be given first priority. Second consideration will be given to residents of Saluda, Union and Laurens Counties.

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of character, sincerity of purpose, community activities, academic achievement and dedication to the fields of horticulture, agriculture, food science and forestry or related fields. Funds are paid directly to the college for benefit of the named student.

Interested candidates should complete a scholarship application form and submit it along with all requested attachments no later than April 20, 2018

Applications are available at Newberry County high school guidance departments, other school guidance departments, and the Newberry County Clemson Extension Office.

The Master Gardeners began their scholarship program in 2004 for students pursuing a degree in horticulture, agriculture, food science, forestry or a related field.   Each year since then, the Association has awarded one or more scholarships to local students. These scholarships are funded through plant sales held throughout the year at community events such as Oktoberfest and the Grow Newberry Farmers Market.

Opera House Presents Special 20th Anniversary Tours  Each Saturday Through March 17

As part of the 20th Anniversary celebration, the Newberry Opera House welcomes the community to special free tours dedicated to the last 20 years at the Opera House.

What should you expect? The tour consists of a brief 20th Anniversary film followed by five stops within our building that represent our anniversary story. At each stop you will fill your goodie bag of small memory items to remember your Opera House visit.

Is this the same as previous tours? While some of the material may be a repeat from our standard tour, these tours are designed to focus more on the last 20 years of history as a performing arts center.

How long is the tour? The average length of a tour is 45 minutes.

Is there a charge?  While we do normally charge for groups of 10 or more, we are providing these special 20th Anniversary tours for FREE.

When are the tours given? 20th Anniversary Tours will be specially given on February 27, March 3, 10, 17 at 10:00 A.M. Please call the box office to inquire about any additional times available to groups of 10 or more.

Do you have to make reservations? While reservations are not required for the Saturday morning tours, the Opera House does request that groups call ahead if you are bringing 10 or more just so the correct amount of materials are available. 20th Anniversary Tours at any other time must be arranged in advance.

Call the Box Office if you have any more questions (803) 276-6264.

Saturday, April 7
1:00 until 10:00 p.m.

Spend a fun day with friends rocking out to your favorite 70s/80s music and enjoying quality craft beers/wine in charming Downtown Newberry while supporting the revitalization of The Ritz, a 1920s historic theatre.

T he Newberry Downtown Development Association (NDDA) is hosting this event and is intended as a fundraiser for the NDDA to create a pool of funding for economic development grants, with the first grant going to the Ritz Theatre to help with their revitalization efforts. Groove N' Brewfest will be a street festival featuring 70s/80s tribute bands (Heart Breaker and Rumours ATL: A Fleetwood Mac Tribute) who will play inside the Ritz Theatre, and craft beer, food vendors, and vintage cars and memorabilia along the east end of Main Street in downtown Newberry. Festival-goers are encouraged to dress in 70s/80s costume. You will get to listen to local bands performing 70s/80s music on an outside stage where you can also participate in a Karaoke contest. Admission to the festival is free, and tickets and VIP packages are available for the two Headliner concerts inside.

Sponsors and volunteers are needed to help make this the best experience for residents and visitors.
