  Neighborhood Plans
Heron Pond

Denver Parks and Recreation (DPR) and the North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative (NDCC) are leading an effort with the surrounding communities to re-envision approximately 80 acres of city property and existing open space around Heron Pond to serve as a regional and local amenity. This community-driven effort will develop a plan for future recreation amenities and provide the opportunity for residents to engage with nature along the river in the Globeville and Elyria/Swansea neighborhoods. The Master Planning effort has just kicked off and the team is beginning the public engagement process. On January 17th, 2017, the Steering Committee had their first meeting. The committee consists of community members and regional partners and will assist in guiding the development of outreach strategies, visioning and design. The first public meeting will be held Wednesday, February 22nd, 5:30-7:00pm at Garden Place Elementary School Gymnasium, 4425 Lincoln Street Denver, CO 80216. Additional information can be found on the project website at www.denvergov.org/heronpond.

Washington Street Study

Denver Public Works (DPW) and the North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative (NDCC) are leading an effort with the surrounding communities to study Washington Street.  Washington Street was identified in the Globeville Neighborhood Plan as "an attractive corridor that creates a positive sense of place, attracts private reinvestment, and better accommodates all transportation modes." The Study will refine and progress this vision of Washington Street into an implementable conceptual design. The project has just started community engagement process and held the first Community Working Group Meeting February 2nd. The working group consists of residents, business owners and other engaged community members and will assist in guiding the development of outreach strategies, visioning and design. The first public meeting is planned for April and will be announced to the greater community as soon as possible. The study is scheduled for completion in the late fall of 2017. Additional information can be found on the project website at www.denvergov.org/washingtonstreetstudy.

Design Work on Brighton Blvd. 44th - Race Court to Advance

In 2015, the NDCC completed 30% design on Brighton Boulevard within the National Western Center segment, which runs from 44th to Race Court. Residents and business owners along the corridor provided initial feedback regarding the challenges and needs for this main street. This project will improve multi-modal connectivity in the area and link the National Western Center with the surrounding neighborhoods and RTD's new North Metro Line that is to be located at 49th and Brighton Bvld. The National Western Center team is advancing this project to 100% design to be completed later this fall. In the next 2 months, the project team will begin to engage residents and other stakeholders to gather feedback that will help shape final design for this portion of Brighton. Construction of the section from 47th to Race Court is slated to begin following the 2018 National Western Stock Show.

Students Collect Data at the National Western Center

A group of students from CSU, CU Denver, and Metro State worked together to gather data on energy, waste, and water during the National Western Stock Show to understand how the campus operates and consumes resources during the annual livestock show. The data will be used to create a strategy toward the goal of creating a net zero campus. The National Western Center Master Plan lists Embracing an Ethic of Regeneration as one of nine guiding principles that will transform the existing site into a year-round destination focused on entertainment, education, and food systems innovation. The data will be sent to CSU in Fort Collins where experts are working on sustainability goals for the new National Western Center.

I-70_Full
Central 70 (Formerly I-70 East Reconstruction)
Central 70 Milestone

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) approved on January 19 the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) plans for reconstruction of Central 70 - the span of I-70 between I-25 and I-225. This milestone essentially clears the way for CDOT to make good on commitments to our residents.

Planning for this project has been ongoing for 14 years. With this announcement, construction is set to begin in 2018. The City and County of Denver has been at the table with CDOT in two primary capacities:
  • To do everything we can to alleviate the impacts of the reconstruction of this obsolete 50-year-old bridge.
  • To take advantage of CDOT's decision to lower the highway to create meaningful opportunities for our residents.
CDOT's collaboration with Denver's neighborhoods on the reconstruction of Central 70 has placed an exclamation point on our residents' priorities and created phenomenal plans for our communities that are now set to become a reality.

While the announcement marks a milestone in this project there is certainly more work to do to replace one of the worst bridges in Colorado and offset impacts to neighborhoods. Denver is committed to continuing our collaborative work so that this project benefits our entire community - from those who rely on I-70 for their livelihoods to the neighbors for whom the highway has long posed a barrier.

As reconstruction moves forward, we know residents and businesses will have many questions about how to navigate preparation for this project. We want to help.  Please contact North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative for project information: (720) 865-2900.

RTD Station Development
University of Colorado A Line

The Regional Transportation District (RTD) and its contractor, Denver Transit Partners (DTP), continue to coordinate with the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) to resolve crossing timing issues along the University of Colorado A Line. In addition, all entities are working hard to get approval to start testing again on the G Line. Dave Genova, RTD General Manager and CEO, and his team met with officials on January 23 in Washington, D.C. to update them on progress and discuss current challenges with the crossings. The FRA has extended the operational waiver through April 30, 2017.

Denver's Corridor of Opportunity

The Corridor of Opportunity represents a nearly 23-mile stretch between linking I-70 and East Commuter line from Denver Union Station to Denver International Airport.

The corridor is one of the most compelling commercial investment opportunities in the world, with thousands of developable acres. With nine commuter-rail stations along RTD's East Line alone, future plans for the area include transit-oriented development with housing, strategic locations for corporate headquarters and abundant options for additional open space.

The variety of opportunities, both existing and future, make this corridor a focal point for Denver's future economy, with nearly 40,000 new jobs through new and expanded businesses and $2.6 billion in economic impact expected over the next three decades, including $13.4 million annually in additional city revenue.

Denver's Corridor of Opportunity

About the North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative (NDCC)

The North Denver Cornerstone Collaborative was founded by Mayor Michael B. Hancock on January 25, 2013. Recognizing a convergence of upcoming projects in the Elyria-Swansea and Globeville neighborhoods, the Mayor identified an opportunity to energize a cornerstone of the Corridor of Opportunity and create an updated gateway to downtown by aligning individual efforts into one coordinated vision. Anna Jones manages the general oversight, planning, strategic coordination, financing and implementation of the six primary projects.
