A Matter of Balance's Eight-Week Course Helps Older Adults Maintain Health & Fitness

The Venice Campus is hosting its first "Matter of Balance" seminar. It's an eight-week course that meets  every Tuesday through September 5 from 10 am-12 noon. This course is a collaboration with the Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida, and includes a workbook, Q & A sessions, and exercises to prevent falls, the leading cause of hospital admissions for older adults. Friendship Centers Interim Senior Manager-Senior Centers Tom Harlow and AAA's Sherry Young, Health & Wellness Coordinator are working together with class attendees to help area seniors navigate living longer and maintaining their health and balance as they age.

Input from Seniors will Help with Creation of Safe Driving Handbook for Older Drivers

Katie Arnold, representing the Safe Mobility for Life Coalition sponsored by Florida Department of Transportation, facilitated a workshop at SFC-DeSoto. The focus of the workshop was to receive input from seniors in our rural community to help in the creation of a new handbook the Coalition is working on to help area senior drivers. The workbook will assist the older driver in knowing when it is no longer safe to be driving, and provide resources to help with the transition.
