What's Happening This October
|
Autumn has Arrived
A great Blue Heron suddenly swooped past the window, and so has summer. The attack of the zucchinis is over but the orchard is still heavily laden with fruit. Brides in their beautiful gowns pursued by photographers, have been celebrating "their day" in the garden.
Far too soon, autumn is upon us. The current show, our lifetime collection of textiles is the best ever, and now my Aunt Amice is knocking on the door as we prepare for the next show; an incredible display of Amice's adventures as an Egyptologist, composer, war correspondent,
film
maker and doctor. King Tut had nothing on her as to collections and debris.
She departed in 1959 but her spirit carries on.

So Much to be Thankful For
This Thanksgiving, we are thankful for YOU, the members of our extended family! Thank you for visiting our exhibitions, volunteering, donating, bringing friends, and attending the programs and events here at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre.
We are pleased to announce that
Sybil will receive her award at the OAC annual general meeting on October 15th. Please join us in congratulating Sybil on this well-deserved award.
Sybil was also featured at the Bloor Hot Docs Cinema in Toronto on September 22 for the film screening of "Sybil and Betts: Requiem for a Friendship" by David Bajurny. There was a tremendous turnout for the screening, which was followed by a Q&A with Sybil and Maren Engel, daughter of Betts Engel.
There are some wonderful new programs happening this month. It's not too late to register for the life-changing
Body Whispers workshop
. We also have Heather Hannan returning with a new weekly gathering called
Transformational Tuesdays. Read below to see what else is happening this month.
All of us at Joshua Creek Heritage Art Centre wish you a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Sybil's memories: The one-room school house
Snyder's Corner's S.S. # 4 had nineteen students and one teacher in a one-room school house. Farm children would walk up to two miles from each direction of the crossroads. Alice M
axwell arrived early each morning in her Model T Ford to teach all eight grades, She had perfect discipline. If you dropped your slate or pencil, you stayed in for recess, and in the desk was a big black strap. Games played in the school yard were Red Light, Gr
een Light, marbles, tag, and throwing the ball ov
er the outhouse wall. In winter we went to school with horse and cutter, sometimes taking smaller children home during blizzards. A giant stove stood in the corner of the school house and a caretaker would come and light it early in the morning. The big boys would fetch a pail of water from the nearby farm. It was the best school I ever went to.
I am the one wearing a white sweater in the front row. I was teacher's pet.
