Amice exhibition at Erchless Estate

Organizing photos of Amice

Our  next exhibition is the culmination of over 50  years of studying, collecting and writing about my aunt Amice Calverley's work and life. It is my biggest endeavour yet. I would like to thank Erin Dee Richard, who co-curated the preview of this show at the  Erchless Estate,  " From Oakville to Abydos",  which opened on October 23rd.  I am also grateful to those who meticulously and professionally catalogued Amice's treasures, in particular Meredith Brand, Amber Hutchinson, Gabriele Cole and Mark Trumpour.

Putting together this exhibition, I have realized that Amice was my model for Joshua Creek. She continues to be a large part of my life.  For both of us  the treasuring of memories of yesterday  and the appreciation of the now  are the springboard for tomorrow .

Sybil's memories: Adventures with Amice

In 1948, Aunt Amice introduced me to her kind of adventure. We drove down the east coast to meet with John D Rockefeller Jr. in New York City. On the way we stopped off at the homes of museum dignitaries and Egyptologists. As they had done the same to her when she lived in Egypt, she felt quite comfortable with our invasion. It was slightly hilarious to see how she ignored their unwelcoming faces, and it was a revelation for me to experience how they lived with their wealth. At the Rockefeller Centre, John D was happy to see us and delighted with Amice's gift of a pot of homemade jam.

In 1952 we made a film of the Byzantine Easter Play in the 10th C. Monastery of St. John the Theologian on the island of Patmos. This became even a more hair-raising adventure. We camped through France, Switzerland, Italy, and Yugoslavia to Greece, sleeping in ditches, driving through riots in Trieste, struggling across borders, and guarding our enormous pile of equipment as deck passengers on the long voyage to the island. Amice would make a plan, fix her eye on the goal, and proceed regardless. At times it was terrifying but somehow we survived. What a memory!
