14th Annual Auction Saturday, March 11, 2017
February  2017
Dear Friend,

Thank you so very much to everyone who has participated in the CSWS Annual Giving Campaign. We are at 44% of our financial goal with 70% of our current families participating. I know that we're going to make 100% participation this year as we come together as a community to support our dear school. Thank you for giving!

This year's 14th Annual Auction Party Fundraiser is Saturday, March 11th at the Lakehills Covenant Church in El Dorado Hills. Our theme is "Message in a Bottle" and t ickets are on sale now. Think vintage nautical as you plan for "what to wear".  Auction invitations were mailed last week and the invitation is below

This year's invitation was hand-painted by CSWS Alumna, Hannah Gunasekara, Class of 2012. Thank you Hannah for such a beautiful image and vision for our event! Be sure to visit our website, cswsauction.com for more information and volunteer opportunities. An online catalog will be available soon, keep your eyes out for it.

Our Alumni feature this month is a heart-felt congratulations to Jonas Poer, Class of 2014 who will be performing on his cello in Carnegie Hall later this month as the winner of the Crescendo International Music Award.

For parent education articles we have another great piece from Beverly Amico from the AWSNA blog Essentials in Education titled A Case for Deferring Electronic Media in the Classroom as well as  another very popular article this month, by Philip Pullman who received the Astrid Lindren Memorial Award in 2005,  "Children need art and stories and poems and music as much as they need love and food and fresh air and play" .   Enjoy and may your hearts be filled with love this Valentine's!

Sincerely,

Jennifer Bumgarner

A three-year-old talks to grandma  on Skype. A seven-year-old reads a fairy-tale with Dad  on a Kindle.  A child with spatial-awareness issues  plays Tetris.
Is this okay? Good, even? Would something else be . . . better?
After 15 to 20 years of scientific research on media use (in its ever changing forms), we have very specific and yet somehow less conclusive results than one might imagine.  Read full article here.
art  "Children need art and stories and poems and music as much as they need love and food and fresh air and play"

Wise words from Philip Pullman who received the Astrid Lindren Memorial Award in 2005

Children need art and stories and poems and music as much as they need love and food and fresh air and play. If you don't give a child food, the damage quickly becomes visible. If you don't let a child have fresh air and play, the damage is also visible, but not so quickly. If you don't give a child love, the damage might not be seen for some years, but it's permanent.
But if you don't give a child art and stories and poems and music, the damage is not so easy to see. It's there, though. Their bodies are healthy enough; they can run and jump and swim and eat hungrily and make lots of noise, as children have always done, but something is missing.  Read the full article here.
