Q.
From a reader:
"I plan to breastfeed my baby when she is born later this spring. What supplements or other liquids will she need?"

A.
From Tonia:
As nature's perfect food for babies, breast milk contains all the nutrients an infant needs in the first six months of life.
At Washington Regional we participate in the Exclusive Breastfeeding perinatal core measure as defined by the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care. Exclusive breastfeeding - with no additional foods or fluids unless medically indicated - for the first six months of life is a goal of several health organizations, including the U.S. Department of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and the American Academy of Pediatrics.

For complete breastfeeding education, Washington Regional offers breastfeeding preparation classes before the baby's birth, individual breastfeeding education while the mom is in the hospital and continued counseling after the family returns home.

To register for classes, call 479-463-1619.

Item1March is Colon Cancer Awareness Month

Washington Regional Cancer Support Home recently received a $13,500 grant from the Ryan Murphy Cancer Fund to provide financial assistance for eligible clients who need screening, diagnostic or treatment procedures for colorectal cancer.

Friends and family of Rogers resident Ryan Murphy, who died of colon cancer at age 26, work to raise money in his name to promote colon cancer awareness, provide education and help area residents pay for certain screening and diagnostic services. Their efforts provide funding for the Cancer Support Home's Colon Cancer Outreach Program.

Applications for assistance from the Colon Cancer Outreach Program are available at Cancer Support Home locations in Bentonville and Fayetteville. The Cancer Support Home also distributes free colon cancer home screening kits, available without an application.

21st Annual Gala and Eagle Awards

Rogers native, Arkansas Entertainers Hall of Fame member and CMA award-winning entertainer Joe Nichols will be the headlining performer at the 21st annual Washington Regional Gala.

The show is sure to include Joe's most recent number one song, "Sunny and 75," his current chart-climbing single, "Yeah," and country radio favorites from his catalog of 15 Top 40 hits including "Brokenheartsville," "Gimme That Girl," "The Impossible," "Size Matters" and "Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off." Plus, Joe typically shares with his audiences songs of influence from artists ranging from Merle Haggard and George Jones to Alan Jackson and George Strait. Joe's current album, "Crickets," recently reached No. 3 on Billboard's Top Country Albums Chart with fresh, edgy songs performed in his signature strong, traditional vocals.

The evening's entertainment will kick off with a performance by Backroad Anthem, a young country-rock band that is quickly making a national name for itself. The group of versatile musicians from Northwest Arkansas has already had experience opening for Joe and has also performed at festivals with Luke Bryan, Toby Keith, and the Eli Young Band. The evening's two musical sets will surround the annual presentation of the Eagle Awards, recognizing excellence in area healthcare. This year's two recipients are Kathy Grisham, executive director of Community Clinic, and Faith in Action.

Proceeds from the Gala will benefit an innovative endovascular neurosurgical hybrid operating suite at Washington Regional Medical Center.
