Just in time for the planting season, we're filling our gallery with a bounty of practical and artful ceramic ware for your garden. Our resident artists and selected students have been busily producing an abundance of garden-related pieces, from bird houses to planters, to adorn your garden. It's the perfect opportunity to get ready for summer and also to find a memorable gift for Mother's Day. Let's get growing!

Potter's quick tip
Q. I'd like to master coil building, but so far it seems to be mastering me. How can I get the upper hand?

A . In this video from Ceramic Arts Network, potter Neil Patterson explains that coiling is a "slow and contemplative building technique," for which you should "give yourself some time and patience." Watch as Neil creates a sizeable shaped pot from coils.

By the way, coils don't have to be round. You might find it easier to work with another shape. ICYMI, Ceramic Arts Network Daily recently posted the article Tips for Forming the Best Ceramic Coils , which gives advice on making flat and triangular coils.

Gently used kiln seeks good home
Kiln for sale
Vital statistics

  • Olympic 2531E oval electric kiln purchased in 2009. Fired maybe 15 times, the last time in 2012. Never been used for glazing, so the inside is pretty immaculate.
  • Computer controlled, comes with a box of kiln posts, 15 or 18 kiln shelves, and breakers and a power cord for wiring to a circuit box.
  • Includes an extension ring, giving the option of making the depth of the kiln 8 inches deeper.
  • Original instruction booklet.
  • Price: $1,000.

Owner says this kiln always fired perfectly but warns that being unused for so long might have had an effect on the elements. There are a few chipped bricks that occurred in moving the kiln, but the damage is very minor and entirely cosmetic.

To purchase

If you are interested, send an email to the seller . Purchaser will need to bring a friend to help dismantle and move the kiln. It comes apart in rings that are light enough, but it's too large and unwieldy for a single person to handle. Purchaser will also need an open pickup truck or a trailer.
