Letter from Laurie
Dear Friend,

From the West Indian American Day Parade and the launch of participatory budgeting to the senseless gun violence and Peace Over Violence March, the month of September has been an eventful, exciting, and challenging period of time for the 35th Council District.

As a community, we continue to extend our thoughts and prayers to the affected families, friends, and colleagues. Despite the obstacles we may face along our individual and collective paths, we must always remember to stand together in good and bad times to support one another. United as one community, one borough, and one city we can accomplish incredible feats. We must never lose sight of our collective goal - to live, work, and raise our families in a safe, affordable community that reflects the beauty and diversity of the Big Apple.

Over the past several weeks, women's reproductive health has been at the forefront with the looming plans in Congress to defund Planned Parenthood. I am proud to say that the New York City Council continues to support their incredible work a staunch advocate, educator, and provider of reproductive health care to 50,000 patients annually. In nearly a century, Planned Parenthood of New York City has expanded its services to support family planning, curb teen pregnancy and STDs through education.

Lastly, October is a dual opportunity to raise awareness of breast cancer and domestic violence. As Chair of the Committee on Women's Issues, I invite you to get screened, walk in support of survivors, become an UpStander, and join the conversation on how we can bring an end to breast cancer and domestic violence.

Enclosed is the  2015 NYC Domestic Violence Awareness Month Event Calendar. Additionally, I have partnered with the Brooklyn Hospital Center to provide free breast cancer screenings every Monday in October.

I hope that you will continue to interact with my office, exchanging ideas and solutions to improve our district, city, and state.

Yours in Partnership,
Laurie A. Cumbo
Member of the New York City Council

You're invited! Fort Greene Park Scope Meeting
Wednesday October 7th at 6pm
We would like to hear your ideas for the upcoming Fort Greene Park capital project: Please join us on Wednesday, October 7th for the Fort Greene Park scope meeting!
Please share this invitation with friends, family, neighbors, and local organizations.

What: Scope meeting for Fort Greene Park pathways
Where: Fort Greene Park Visitor Center
When: Wednesday, October 7th at 6:00 p.m.
Why: For NYC Parks to hear input from community members about the upcoming capital project for pathways in Fort Greene Park

Fort Greene Park has recently received funding for a capital construction project for the park's pathways. The scope meeting is the first step in the capital process after a project has been funded, providing the community with the opportunity for input in the design. At scope meetings, Parks staff, the designer, elected officials, residents, and community board representatives come together to share ideas about the project. The designer gathers ideas from everyone present and considers them when preparing the park's design.

Enclosed is a full guide to the capital process and a guide for community participation.

We understand this meeting may not be at a convenient time for all, but it would be great for Parks to hear from more community members about what they value in the park and what they would like to see for the park's pathways.
