New education garden at PCC Rock Creek
On a sunny, warm afternoon in June, the Washington County Master Gardener Association (WCMGA), led by Susan Albright and Sue Ryburn with a dedicated team of Master Gardeners, the PCC Rock Creek Landscape Technology Program along with PCC President, Sandra Fowler-Hill and Karen Sanders, Division Dean celebrated the groundbreaking of an Education Garden at Portland Community College at Rock Creek. They were joined by several sponsor organizations that worked collaboratively for two years to implement the plan. There has long been a strong partnership between PCC locations and OSU Extension Service. This is the first Extension garden on a PCC campus site. All parties want to thank Weston Miller, OSU Extension Horticulture faculty, for his great support along the way.

This unique collaboration allows the organizations whose core focus is education and outreach to the public, to work together on common areas of interest. The garden is designed as a learning lab with educational stations that provide information to the public about sustainable gardening practices, seating areas are incorporated for visitors to relax and reflect. Native bee nesting stations will be installed throughout the garden with some at lower height for viewing by children. The hope is for other PCC programs to use the site as a learning lab for the sciences and the arts.

The garden layout was designed by Beth Benz, Northwest Garden Design Consulting LLC. Beth collaborated with the Master Gardeners offering expertise in the selection and placement of plants to fit major themes and to create a functional and aesthetically pleasing design.

Planting this summer will include “Garden Classrooms” for a Waterwise Garden,
Pollinator and Insect Habitat Garden, and a Fragrance Garden. Also included will be a wide selection of trees and shrubs that thrive in our climate. It is accessible during PCC Rock Creek hours (Monday-Saturday 7 AM-10:30 PM).

Garden care will be provided by Master Gardener volunteers, though the public is
welcome. For the garden work schedule, educational and upcoming Master Gardener events visit their website .
Cottonwood 4-H Youth Entrepreneurs launch their businesses!
After months of hard work, the 7th grade Cottonwood 4-H Youth Entrepreneurs launched their
businesses with great success!

Twenty-four youth in the Cottonwood 4-H Youth Entrepreneurs program broke into four business teams. They worked diligently over the past six months to develop their business ideas, conduct market research, and develop their business plans.

In April, they participated in the 4-H Youth Entrepreneurs Summit on Oregon State University campus where they pitched their business plan to the Oregon
4-H Foundation and the OSU College of Business. After the teams made successful pitches, each was awarded a small 4-H business loan.

The teams went to work purchasing supplies, collecting product inventory and launching their marketing plans. The Grand Opening for the teams was on
June 7. They were amazed that in just two days, they nearly sold out of all products and brought in over $700.

The youth teams will continue running their businesses over the summer in their
neighborhoods. "Way to go everyone" said Maureen Hosty, Multnomah County 4-H faculty who leads special 4-H initiatives in Multnomah County. "Congratulations on your success!"
The youth businesses are:
Bounce - bouncy balls for all
Mira Luxury Goods – unique fashionable products that protect what you own and connect to your interests
Bath Potions - A company to relax and make happiness for the customer for just a small price
Customization Jewelry Station – customized quality jewelry from recycled jewelry
