The summer is heating up and so are our stations.  I'd like to congratulate KTDO El Paso on the record ratings they received, the best in the station's history.  KTDO is #1 during the 2 pm - 4 pm time slot across all stations regardless of language proving that our programming really resonates with audiences.  The station is hotter than ever and we look forward to continued growth throughout the station group.   
  
As I reflected on the past quarter what stood-out to me was our collaborative spirit especially as it relates to our community. We had some significant hardships in our markets as Mother Nature revealed her power both in El Paso with flooding and in Springfield with the aftermath of tornados.  Our stations responded quickly providing news and information in a critical time of need.  They also joined with their communities to support those who had been affected by the tragedies.  I am proud of our stations and all that we do locally.  We continue to remain true to our roots focusing on how we can use our position in the marketplace to meet the needs of our audience and utilize our collective voice to make a difference.  There is a lot to look forward to in the 3rd quarter including 5 of our 8 Ferias and the debut of the ZGS company-wide Town Hall meetings.  Let's make it a priority to bring this spirit of collaboration to all that we do and continue to demonstrate to our viewers and partners just how committed we are.  Enjoy the rest of your summer and make sure you take a look at the NEW Sales Zone debuting in this edition of the newsletter.  Un  gran abrazo y saludos a todos.

WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield Supports Community after Tornado's Devastation

 

WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield was on the ground providing support to the Springfield community immediately following the June 1 tornado that devastated the state's third largest city.  The station aired Public Service Announcements, organized donations of supplies, and provided on-site assistance in collaboration with organizations including the American Red Cross and the Latino Chamber of Commerce.  WRDM/WDMR utilized social media and aired extended news coverage to provide on-going information to Hispanic viewers about the resources available to victims as well as to encourage the audience to contribute to the relief effort.

WZDC Washington, DC Participates in the Global Race for the Cure

 

WZDC Washington, DC furthered their partnership with Susan G. Komen as a White Ribbon Sponsor by fielding a team for the walk and hosting a booth in the sponsor marketplace on June 4 on the National Mall.  Over 40,000 participants from around the country joined this renowned event to help raise funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer.  This year WZDC partnered with the local non-profit, Nueva Vida, which provides support to Spanish-speaking victims and survivors of breast cancer in the area to create the largest team in the 7 year relationship with the Susan G. Komen Global Race for a Cure®.  The event raised more than $5 million to fund breast cancer programs for women in need throughout the National Capital Area and across the globe.

KNSO Fresno gets Wet and Wild     

 

KNSO Fresno celebrated Father's Day at the Wild Water Adventure Park on June 19.  Over 100 families enjoyed fun in the sun and activities put on by KNSO at the aquatic park.  The day was so popular with viewers that the station is continuing to give away tickets to the water park.

WZDC Washington, DC Celebrates Reading  

 

In April, WZDC Washington, DC sponsored an on-air promotion of the annual event  El Día de los Niños / El Día de los Libros (Children's Day/Book Day) organized by the DC Public Library system.  The event promotes libraries and celebrates bilingual literacy through story times, games, special presentations and guest appearances. The team from Telenoticias Washington was happy to participate by reading books to children in both Spanish and English.

WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield Hosts Job Fair     


WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield proudly presented its first Feria del Empleo (Job Fair) on April 10 at the Learning Corridor in Hartford.  The event attracted more than 1,000 job seekers and dozens of local companies that were actively recruiting. It also provided participants with information about diverse career opportunities, how to start your own business and educational information for those wanting to continue their studies.

WZDC Washington, DC Cleans-up the Potomac

   

The WZDC Washington, DC team joined hundreds of volunteers from around the region for the Alice Ferguson Foundation's annual Potomac Watershed Cleanup.  WZDC was a sponsor of the event promoting it on-air. Along with local volunteers, the team picked-up trash and recycled items found in a tributary of the Potomac River near the station.  This year 228 tons of trash was disposed of and almost 15,000 bags of recyclables collected with each volunteer collecting an average of 36.3 pounds of trash.

Who will be ZGS's Olympic Champion? This year, we have two ZGS Account Executives close to reaching the $1,000,000 mark in individual sales for their respective stations. Horacio Badia from WZDC Washington, DC and Marlene Abrahantes of WRMD Tampa are more than half way to reaching this monumental milestone.  The first Account Executive to reach the 1,000,000 dollar mark will win an Olympic prize package. He or she will receive a trip to London and have the opportunity to attend the 2012 Olympic Games courtesy of ZGS.  The winner of this contest will be announced at the end of April 2012 after both AE's have had a chance to collect dollars. Eduardo Zavala, ZGS's Vice-Chairman participated as a panel member at the Newsmaker Luncheon at the National Association of Hispanic Journalists 29th Annual Multimedia Convention and Career Expo on June 16.  The panel titled A View from the Top: The Impact of Spanish-language News Media discussed the changing media landscape and emphasized the importance of social media in its growth.  Over 900 people attended this year's conference in Orlando.

Cynthia Martinez, ZGS's Marketing Director was selected to participate in the Spanish Embassy's Young Hispanic Leaders Program in Spain from May 16 - 20.  The program's objective is to reinforce relations between the U.S. Hispanic community and Spain. 15 young professionals had the opportunity to learn about Spain's economy, culture and society.

KTDO El Paso Delivers Highest Ratings in Station's History

 

KTDO El Paso achieved the highest ratings in the station's history in May according to Nielsen Media Research figures. Thanks to a strong daytime lineup, the impact of its local news product Telenoticias El Paso, and impressive primetime schedule, the station experienced a substantial increase in Spanish-language market share Monday through Friday in each time period.  Among the highlights: 

  • Book-to-book increases in every time period as well as a substantial increase in audience share relative to KINT 26 (Univision) and KTFN 65 (Telefutura)
  • Telemundo El Paso is the #1 station in the market from 2 pm - 4 pm regardless of language
  • With the launch of Telenoticias El Paso, the station has already commanded a 20% share of the 5 pm and 10 pm Spanish-language news blocks
  • Telemundo El Paso experienced significant primetime growth and up to a 50% share of the relevant market in the programs from 6 pm - 10 pm

Telemundo El Paso's record performance was the culmination of book-to-book increases in each of the last four rating periods.

WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield Celebrates 25th Anniversary

 

WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield kicked-off its 25th Anniversary on June 12 with a special celebration for viewers at Quassy Amusement Park.  The event featured Jorge Bernal from Al Rojo Vivo, as well as entertainment from musical guests Alicastro, Cynthia Arana, Ricky C, Pura Xplosion, and Pedro Valentín.  The station also hosted a special gathering of clients, friends, and community leaders on June 16 at Villa Capri in Wallingford to mark the anniversary. During the celebration the station received a proclamation from Joseph Rodríguez on behalf of Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal recognizing the station's dedication and commitment to the Hispanic community for the past 25 years.  The Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Springfield, Massachusetts also honored the station for its local involvement. WRDM/WDMR Hartford/Springfield is planning a variety of local promotions and events over the next several months to commemorate the anniversary of the station.

WWDT Fort Myers- Naples Hosts 5th Annual La Feria de la Familia 

Thousands of families from Southwest Florida joined WWDT Fort Myers-Naples's for the celebration of the 5th annual La Feria de la Familia on June 12 at the Harborside Event Center.  Arturo Linares, of the local show Crónica Teve and Adela González, emceed the six hour event and helped welcome David Chocarro of La Casa de al Lado and Cynthia Olavarría of Mi Corazon Insiste en Lola Volcán, Telemundo's newest novela productions.  A highlight of this year's event was the musical line-up including well-known merengue group Oro Sólido who closed the event with an electrifying musical performance. Local bands Larry Duran y su Conjunto de vallenato and La Epidemia performed for the crowd earlier in the day.  Event participants donated blood, received free health screenings, legal consultations, learned about fire prevention, registered for library cards, and received free products from Goya, who celebrated its 75th anniversary at La Feria de la Familia. Children and their families especially enjoyed the mini-studio where they had the opportunity to tape their own weather segment, which they could later view on holaciudad.com

WWSI Philadelphia Partners with NBC 10 for Education Nation
 
WWSI Philadelphia participated in the NBC News Education Nation On-the-Road tour during their stop in the City of Brotherly Love.   The Education Nation Experience is a public exhibition designed to inform and engage visitors on the current state of education in America, including global competitiveness in K-12 education, post-secondary education, and workforce readiness.  In a moderated discussion with NBC News' Andrea Mitchell, NBC 10's Lori Wilson and WWSI's Fernando Méndez, Philadelphia leaders talked about the needs of a 21st Century workforce and how best prepare students for the jobs of the future. WWSI promoted Telemundo's El Poder de Saber multi-platform initiative that urges Hispanics to seize the power of education with a combination of special coverage on WWSI's local public affairs program En Portada and the station website. Through local events, partnerships and programming WWSI will continue the conversation about education in the Hispanic community as one of its primary initiatives.

Volunteers field calls 

Romántica 900am Raises Over $70,000 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital

 
WILC Romántica 900am partnered with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital for the annual Promesa y Esperanza (Promise and Hope) radiothon on May 19 and 20. The two-day radiothon collected $73,355 in donations to help fight childhood cancer and other deadly diseases. All donations will directly benefit St. Jude to help to provide treatments, housing, food and transportation to patients and their families.  Listeners were encouraged to make a one-time donation or commit to becoming Angeles de Esperanza (Angels of Hope) by making a donation of 20 dollars per month. Romántica 900am's on-air personalities featured interviews from patients, parents, doctors and representatives from St. Jude throughout the broadcast sharing heartfelt stories with the listening audience. WILC has raised well-over one million dollars for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital since the inception of the radiothon.

WWSI Philadelphia and the Please Touch Museum hosted the third annual Día del Niño (Children's Day) with over 1,800 people attending from the Greater Philadelphia region.  Children, parents and families participated in a variety of kid-friendly activities, obtained valuable information, and enjoyed the museum's exhibitions.  This year's event  included music by bilingual educator and entertainer Louie Miranda, demonstrations by Philadelphia Kixx's player Angel Rivillo, dances by Raices Culturales Latinoamericanas, and art creation with visual artists Ana Guissel and César Viveros.  One of the most popular attractions was the WWSI mini-studio where children and adults reported the weather and traffic. Their reports were immediately posted on holaciudad.com. The child-centric event encourages exploration and learning while celebrating Hispanic youth and culture.

Inside the Richmond Children's Museum

 

WZTD Richmond held the first annual Día del Niño at the Children's Museum of Richmond.  Local organizations and businesses participated in this event where hundreds of people gathered during the day to celebrate children.  There was plenty of entertainment and activities for the little ones to enjoy including the Latin Ballet of Virginia, Theater and Ballet MAR, puppets, and a special appearance by Clifford the Big Red Dog.  Attendees also had the chance to visit the museum and tape their own news reports in the WZTD mini-studio.  The children were excited to meet Luis Rendon, the National Gatorade Boy's Soccer Player of the Year and local resident who currently plays for the Under-18 U.S. National Team. The station was honored by the presence of Juan Santacloma, the Chesterfield County Multicultural Liaison and Tanya González from the Richmond Hispanic Liaison.

WNEU Boston sponsored the Ad Club's "Come to your Census" seminar at the Liberty Hotel in Boston on May 26.  The event was held in conjunction with the station's ongoing Breakfast Series, and provided an insightful overview of the 2010 Census data and its impact.  Thought-leaders in multicultural marketing from General Motors, Google, McDonald's, Procter & Gamble, Univision, as well as ZGS's own Julissa Marenco were asked to reflect on the significant changes and provide concrete insight and ideas on how to address the shifting marketplace.

WTMO Orlando - May 7

 

Over 5,000 people gathered at the Florida Mall to celebrate WTMO's Fiesta de las Madres for the first time in Orlando.  Hosted by the Telenoticias Orlando team, the event took place over Mother's Day weekend, honoring mothers with plenty of information, entertainment, games, and prizes.  Fiesta included a special guest appearance by Vanessa Hauc from Telemundo's Al Rojo Vivo and Noticiero Telemundo.  Participants had fun with interactive Zumba lessons and the celebration culminated with an amazing performance by local salsa band Orquesta Zarabanda.  The turnout for the first annual Fiesta de las Madres was impressive.

WZDC Washington, DC's third annual Fiesta de la Madres honored mothers in Downtown Silver Spring with record attendance.  Over 8,000 participated in this year's event which celebrates women by providing relevant information as well as entertainment.  This was the first year the outdoor event was held at the Silver Spring Civic Building's Veterans Plaza, ushering in new attendees along with those that return year after year.  Fiesta de la Madres featured free health screenings, live music, entertainment, information, demonstrations and activities for children.  In addition to the products and information available, loyal viewers had the unique opportunity to meet some of Telemundo's biggest celebrities.  Vanessa Pose and Melvin Cabrera from Aurora, one of Telemundo's hit novelas attended, alongside Jorge Bernal from Al Rojo Vivo.

KVDA San Antonio Recognizes Local Mothers

 

KVDA San Antonio invited over 80 mothers to the station's studios to celebrate Mother's Day on May 10 for a luncheon provided by Chef Waldo Castro, owner of El Ceviche de Waldito, a local Peruvian restaurant located on the city's Northwest side.  Mother's enjoyed entertainment by Victor Jiménez and Maru Cantu.  KVDA awarded two lucky mothers with a pair of tickets to see Latin heartthrob Luis Miguel and a Visa gift card.

WRMD Tampa, ESPN Deportes 1550AM and holaciudad.com hosted the second annual Fiesta Mexicana at the Manatee County Fair in Palmetto. Fiesta Mexicana is an exciting and interactive family festival that celebrates Mexican culture and its contributions to the local community.  The public received valuable information from local businesses and organizations including attorneys, education partners, and the Mexican Consulate among others. The free event began with the ribbon cutting ceremony that included Shirley Bryant, the Mayor of Palmetto, and  Monica Noguera, Telemundo news personality.  Giovanni Scavia, ESPN Deportes sportscaster, and Genny Morales, a local radio personality emceed the event.  Musical performances included local bands Mariachi Juvenil, Pantera Musical, Espiritus, Virgy and a dance presentation from the Ballet Folklorico Mexicano Texcalli.  Children enjoyed activities, face painting, games, and photos with animated characters.

KVDA San Antonio and AARP Join Forces to Fight Hunger
 

KVDA San Antonio and AARP teamed-up for the Lideres de Esperanza (Leaders of Hope) , an award to recognize individuals over 50 who are giving back to the Hispanic community.  KVDA ran on-air spots to promote the contest and identify area residents involved in combating hunger.  Leaders from across the country were nominated, but in the end San Antonio's own Jane Denkewalter walked away with the honor.  Denkewalter, the Manager of Senior Programs at the San Antonio Food Bank, was awarded $2,500 for her organization to continue the fight against hunger.  Through her work with the food bank she has helped more than 12,000 seniors in 16 Southwest Texas counties.  She was recognized at the Lideres de Esperanza awards ceremony in Los Angeles at the end of May.

WNEU Boston Presents Housing Línea de Ayuda

WNEU Boston and MassHousing came together to present Línea de Ayuda, a help line for the Hispanic community on June 8 during primetime.  The initiative offered information to viewers regarding purchasing a home and the different financing programs offered by MassHousing, the state's affordable housing bank which supports the creation, preservation and long-term viability of affordable homeownership and rental housing opportunities for residents with modest incomes.  Over 150 calls were received as a result of the Línea de Ayuda.  The agency and its business partners are committed to bringing affordable loans to a new generation of Latino borrowers through this exciting new partnership.

WZDC Washington Viewer Wins National Contest  

  

Alex Moncada of Alexandria, Virginia was the grand prize winner of  Western Union's 'Love in Any Language'  contest, proving he knows how to "Sing It, Shout It, Send It!" with a unique music video.  Moncada participated in the local casting call for the contest hosted by WZDC Washington.   Love in Any Language, a national campaign, was created for consumers to express love in a universal way and to pay tribute to mothers, family, friends and loved ones.  Moncada was selected as one of the top 10 finalists from hundreds of entrants for his original and personal music video entitled "En Mil Idiomas" (In a Thousand Languages) to express his love and emotion for a girl whose picture he views on his phone. Moncada created a video featuring young people from different ethnicities showing signs that read, "I Love You" in different languages.  As the grand prize winner, Moncada received a trip to the 2011 Billboard Latin Music Conference and was formally presented with the winning prize of $10,000 in person by Daddy Yankee.   He performed at the Billboard Bash and back home at WZDC's Fiesta de la Madres.  He was also featured on Telenoticias Washington, DC.

KVDA San Antonio Competes in Media Olympics


KVDA San Antonio competed in the San Antonio Media Alliance Media Olympics.  The event was held at the STAR Soccer complex on June 23 and included different activities such as drag racing, sponge toss and a tie breaker tug of war. San Antonio's TV, radio, print and digital media stars battled for bragging rights.  The slogan for the event says it all: "where ratings and cost per point mean nothing...bring it."  In the end KENS 5 took the title for this year but the KVDA team is already training for next year's competition.

WNEU Boston Telecam Highlights Latin American Countries


WNEU Boston invited all of the Boston Consuls representing Latin American countries to a breakfast meeting at the UMASS Club to present the new Telecam series which will promote their countries to the Greater Boston community.  The series, titled Telecam Travel Series, will showcase each country's geography, tourism, culture, and people.  Representatives from Chile, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, and Venezuela attended the meeting.  The Telecam is designed to allow businesses and organizations to connect with their audience in an unconventional and creative way and is a powerful marketing tool that is extremely popular with both the clients and the audience.

KNSO Fresno Hosts Spring Mixer

 

KNSO Fresno and the Central California Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (CCHCC) hosted a Spring Mixer on June 1. Over 100 guests visited the station offices to meet Mike Scanlon, the station's new General Manager.  The special emcee of the event was Juany Bazan, Noticiero Telemundo Fresno's news anchor.   Guests included everyone from Chamber representatives, to clients, prospects and even KNSO's local competitors dropped in to say hello and wish the team good luck. It was a fantastic event with an exciting turn out.  It is also rumored to be the best Chamber mixer yet and it has been requested that KNSO repeat as the host for the fall mixer

As the Fútbol de Primera affiliate in Washington, DC Romántica 900am was the official radio broadcaster for the CONCACAF Gold Cup soccer tournament.  Romántica 900am broadcasted the games and had the opportunity to host two lucky winners at the quarterfinal games which were held at RFK stadium in Washington, DC.  The winners, accompanied by Neo Lobo, one of Romántica's on-air personalities, met world renowned sports broadcaster Andrés Cantor.  Cantor is the host of Fútbol de Primera and is one of the most recognized sports broadcasters in the world.

WTMO Orlando Provides Hurricane Preparedness Outreach

 

For the 4th consecutive year, WTMO Orlando has reached out to the Central Florida community by providing a comprehensive hurricane preparedness guide and on-air special in anticipation of the  tropical season.  This year's special, hosted by Florida Emergency Preparedness Association Media Award winner and Telenoticias Orlando's own Sergio González, kicked-off hurricane season in early June with an extensive report titled Huracanes: Destrucción sin Precedentes.  The special chronicled various historical and preventative aspects of living in hurricane-prone Florida.  Paired with this special, the 2011 Hurricane Guide debuted completely paperless for the first time.  The guide is accessible through WTMO's digital platform holaciudad.com.  With continuing local coverage of all tropic activity as the season progresses, the Telenoticias Orlando and holaciudad.com teams are committed to providing the most informative and current advisories and news in the event of a natural disaster.

KTDO Celebrates La Reina Finale in Style

 

 

In celebration of the most successful novela in Telemundo's history, KTDO El Paso hosted a finale party. One-hundred lucky viewers were given VIP treatment for an exclusive dinner and viewing of the final episode of La Reina del Sur on May 30 at Julio's Café Corona.  With lots of prizes, mug shot photo opportunities posted on holaciudad.com, and even special "Reina tequila shots," viewers had a fantastic evening.
