Zen for Ten

We have to learn to live our life as a human being deeply. We need to live every breath deeply, so that we have peace, joy and freedom as we breathe.

Awareness of Breath Practice

I read recently that the breath is the link between the sympathetic and the parasympathetic nervous systems in us humans. The sympathetic system is that part of us that's always assessing our experience for threats, and at times activating the "fight or flight" response (sometimes too much!).

The parasympathetic system is complementary (and powerful). It calms and relaxes the sympathetic system after it's "activated" the Fight or Flight response. It returns us to balance. It's sometimes called the home of the "relaxation response".

We need both systems, but it's important that they are in balance. Sometimes the Fight or Flight response can become overactive, even "stuck" on the "on" position. Meditation on the breath activates the parasympathetic part of our nervous system. It calms the Fight or Flight response, and brings us back into balance.

Rx: For a balanced and peaceful mind and body, practice meditation daily.
