Midweek E-Update
Souper Bowl of Caring
This Sunday, Feb. 5 is "Soup-er" Bowl Sunday. The youth will be collecting dollars for local food banks. Please bring a monetary donation or canned goods.
February's Focus statement
"God created me to be a light bearer. I am called and blessed to bring our God's colors in our world."
Connecting with this weeks Gospel:
Light shines in the darkness for the upright, the psalmist sings. Isaiah declares that when we loose the bonds of injustice and share our bread with the hungry, the light breaks forth like the dawn. In another passage from the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus, the light of the world, calls his followers to let the light of their good works shine before others. Through baptism we are sent into the world to shine with the light of Christ.

Luther Fun Fact

While hiding from his papist pursuers at the Wartburg castle, Luther went on a hunting expedition. panicked rabbit, fleeing pursuing dogs, ran up Luther’s sleeve, only to be killed by the canines biting through the garment. The event struck Luther as analogous to his situation, fleeing from papal wrath.

Zion Reads Luther
Martin Marty's book, Luther, has been chosen as Zion's common read in 2017 on the topic of Luther. That fall day when Martin Luther tacked a challenge on the door of his local church, he was not doing a totally new thing, but what he wrote was new and led to a revolution in Christendom. Marty's book can be purchased now; sale will continue through March 2017, when Pastor Debner will lead discussions based on the book. The cost of the book is $10 and is available in the Welcome Center.

Pastor Jim's Blog

I was reading a blog today by David Staal, the president of Kids Hope USA. This is an interesting article about the need to be mentor. One line caught my attention. He wrote W"hat you believe by the time you're 13 is what you'll die believing."...
