    FRESH & LOCAL

Oh, how the time does fly! It's been six months since we've opened up our umbrellas in the historic French Market for our new Wednesday market. Every Wednesday from 2-6 p.m. you can find us in the Quarter with many of your favorite vendors from our other three markets and some new ones as well! From seasonal veggies and fruit, to seafood, baked goods, plant starts, and much more, our vendors are working hard to bring fresh local food back to the oldest public market in the nation, and to French Quarter, Trem?, Marigny and Bywater neighborhoods. Whether you're in the neighborhood and want to walk or bike over, or you're coming from across town and want to take advantage of the free two hour parking in the French Market parking lot, come on out and celebrate six months of fresh local food in the Quarter with us this Wednesday!

    PICK OF THE WEEK:

    VEGGI'S EARTH DAY FARMRAISER!

Our very own Thursday market vendors, VEGGI Farmers Co-op, are having an Earth Day Farmraiser this Saturday, April 25th from 11a.m. - 2p.m. Come out to our Saturday market, then head out to New Orleans East and check out Veggi's new farm site, meet the farmers who work the land, and enjoy some eats and drinks from some of the fine local restaurants that serve VEGGI produce on a regular basis. For more info or to RSVP, click here. See you then!

    MARKET HAIKUS WITH THE

    NEW ORLEANS PUBLIC LIBRARY!

Just like every last Saturday of the month, we'll be getting inspired this Saturday with some market-themed haiku writing. To make things even more fun, we'll have the New Orleans Public Library out with some books on haiku poetry and writing tips for us. Come on out and get poetic with us!

    TUESDAY'S GREEN PLATE SPECIAL

It's been great having Hillel's Kitchen out this month under the GPS tent! If you've yet to try their pastrami-topped kale salad or delicious house baked macaroons, be sure to come on out this Tuesday and grab a plate. Did you know they do private catering events too? Check out more info here.

    RECIPE OF THE WEEK

We were so excited to see that the Monica's brought the year's first crop of squash with them last week. In honor of their arrival, come out to market, pick some up for yourself and try out this Spicy Squash Pancake recipe!

     Spicy Squash Pancakes

Use one type or a combination of zucchini, pattypan and yellow squash. Adjust how hot you want the cakes by adjusting the amount of hot pepper and seeds you use. Prepare small pancakes for an appetizer or side dish, or make larger ones and serve with crusty bread and Salsa Fresca (recipe below) for a full meal.

     3 eggs

     4 cups grated summer squash

1 cup fresh corn kernels, cut from 2 ears

     1/4 cup chopped green onions

     1 large jalapeno pepper, minced

     1/3 cup parmesan cheese

1/2 cup grated sharp cheddar cheese

     1/3 cup all-purpose flour

     ? cup bread crumbs

     1 tablespoons olive oil

     Black pepper to taste

     Oil for saut?ing

In a large bowl, beat the eggs. Grate squash and squeeze out water. Mix in squash, corn, green onions, jalapeno, the cheeses, flour, bread crumbs, olive oil and ground pepper. Heat two tablespoons oil in a heavy 10-inch skillet over medium-high heat. For small cakes, spoon one tablespoon squash mixture per cake into the hot oil and flatten to uniform thickness. For large cakes, use two tablespoons of squash mixture per cake. Do not over crowd the skillet. Leave about an inch between cakes.

    Salsa Fresca

    (Serves 6)

3 large slicing tomatoes, seeded and chopped

     2 clove garlic, minced

     1 cup green onions, minced

     3 T lime juice

     3 T fresh chopped cilantro

1 large jalape?o, seeded and minced

     1 T olive oil

     Salt to taste

Prepare all ingredients. Mix and serve. If you plan to store the sauce in the refrigerator, place it in a jar and pour a tablespoon of oil over the top. Makes about 4 cups.

Sacred Creatures, Beloved Pets: Ancient Egyptian Animal Mummies
    • Tuesday, April 21, 2015, 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

The relationship between humans and animals has always been complex with mutual dependencies that are practical, psychological, and even theological. Ancient Egyptian animal mummies are a particular manifestation of this complex web of inter-relations.

This lecture presents the different types of animal mummies (food, pets, votive offerings, sacred creatures, and 'other') and explains how and why they were made, the theological and aesthetic decisions that went into their 'packaging,' what each type meant to the ancient Egyptians, and how they reflect the ways in which the Egyptians interacted with the animal world, and how even today they influence our view of the ancient Egyptians and influence contemporary thought and art.

This lecture is co-sponsored by the Louisiana Interest Group of the American Research Center in Egypt and the Center for Scholars at Tulane University.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS ISSUES FILMING NOTICE FOR RESIDENTS

NEW ORLEANS - Today, the Mayor's Office of Cultural Economy issued filming notices to New Orleans residents in the French Quarter and Algiers for April 21 through Wednesday, April 22, 2015.

    French Quarter

On Tuesday, April 21 through Wednesday, April 22, 2015, a production company will film exterior scenes on Chartres Street. As a result, the street will close from 1:00 a.m. until 4:00 a.m.

CITY OF NEW ORLEANS TO HOLD ABANDONED VEHICLE AUCTION

NEW ORLEANS - On Tuesday, April 21, 2015, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works will hold its second abandoned vehicle auction of 2015. The auction, located at Almonaster Auto Pound, 10200 Almonaster Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70127, will begin at 9:00 a.m.

Since May 2010, the City of New Orleans has held 19 vehicle auctions, selling 2,189 abandoned cars and contributing over $1,515,495 to the City's General Fund.

As in prior auctions, the buyer will pay a $50 administrative fee which gets the buyer a notarized title at time of payment. This feature has been extremely well received by the public as the buyers no longer have to take all of the documentation to the Division of Motor Vehicles to apply for a new title. This process has proven to save residents time and streamlines their purchase.

The current auction will have 113 vehicles for sale, all of which have been discarded on neighborhood streets or left unclaimed by residents with excessive parking fines and fees.

Abandoned vehicles take up parking spaces needed for traffic circulation, contribute to a sense of neglect in neighborhoods, and can become junked harborages for rats and mosquitoes. To combat this quality of life nuisance, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works towed 4,467 vehicles in the first quarter of 2015.

Online Bidding: Introduced in March 2009, the City will continue use of its online bidding feature. Residents interested in online bidding need to register with Proxibid prior to the auction start time by visiting www.brownsauction.com. The online bidding feature allows residents to preview and pre-bid on any vehicle prior to the live auction, get vehicle information online by entering the vehicle information number (VIN), and bid on vehicles from anywhere in the world as the auction proceeds live from the Almonaster Auto Pound.

All prospective buyers must register before viewing. A refundable $50 fee is required to view and/or bid on any vehicle during the auction. The fee will be applied to any purchase made or refunded if no purchase is made.

Brown's Auction Company from Lafayette, LA, is the State of Louisiana's licensed, authorized dealer and conducts auctions on all City of New Orleans equipment.

Individuals interested in purchasing a car are encouraged to pre-register today and to arrive early on Thursday as many cars sell within the first few minutes of the auction.

    Quick Facts

    *             All vehicle information is currently on Brown's Auction Web site, www.brownsauction.com. Per the terms of the contract, the available vehicle list includes the VIN, make, model, and lien holder information. Any auction-related questions should be directed to Brown's Auction Company at (337) 457-4919.

    *             The current auction has been advertised since Friday, April 17, 2015.

    *             Prior to the auction, attempts are made to contact the vehicle's owner or lien holder before the vehicles are added to the auction list. Vehicle owners or lien holders that pay all fines and fees are able to retrieve their vehicles prior to the auction.

    Purchasing a vehicle

    *             Cash or cashier's check required

    *             Payment must be received on the day of the auction. If payment is not received, the purchased vehicle will be placed on the list for the next scheduled auction, the buyer's $50 deposit is forfeited and the bidder is barred from participation in future auctions.

    *             A $50 administrative fee will be added for each purchased vehicle which gives the buyer a notarized title to that vehicle

    *             City employees and relatives of City employees are forbidden from purchasing any vehicles at the auction.

    Wacky Wednesday: Samurai Cop

     Wednesday, April 22 9:00p

Bar bouncer, drama enthusiast and for sure, total white dude, Matt Hannon, redefines what it means to be a law enforcement hero, when he stars as... SAMURAI COP! The absolute infallibility of his crime fighting instincts reveal a mind one might expect of a man raised by a herd of brain damaged goats.

But if you're looking for tips on romance, you're going to wanna bring a notepad and 2 pens, because he knows how to make a woman feel special. And yes, sometimes that involves murdering the neighbor's chicken.

No matter what shape the suave stylings of Samurai Cop's wooing take on, you can bet it's gonna lead to the chamber of love... for some of the most incredibly awful soft-core make-out scenes ever put to film.

In the end, there's just no way to lose when SAMURAI COP is part of your night. The outtakes are the only takes, y'all. And if this brand of unforgivably bad writing, directing, cinematography, editing and ACTING doesn't make you love movies in a whole new way, than you, my friend, are without joy in your life.

    The Tale of Princess Kaguya

I am just so happy, soooooo happy!!!! to be able to screen this film another week. I love this film so much. I really hope everyone in New Orleans comes to see it.

If you haven't seen this film, you simply must. It will give you strength to love life and be a good human for years to come.

When I saw this film the first time, it was life-changing. I wrote this on our facebook page:

Wow. I just watch Princess Kaguya for the first time. Written words cannot describe the power of that film. Man...if only American animation was able to portray the human spirit with such simplicity and breadth. I once read a good definition of beauty: that which is simple in its means and rich in its results. Kaguya soaked me in and in a high flying moment at the end something snapped on me and I began weeping uncontrollably at the painfulness of the beauty of life. No film has ever done that to me. It's never been as difficult to land back in the real world. Kaguya is based on an ancient folk tale. And the film translates the the spiritual gravity of the story with immaculate precision. That's the best my fumbling words can describe it. I'm so happy that this film exists.

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

This movie is so cool. So bad ass. From the cinematography and the music, it feels like a John Wayne western, but it's so much more than that. It's every hipster feminists' wet dream (Me included! As the male side of Indywood, I proudly call myself a feminist! And most people would probably call me a hipster...and I love this movie!).

"Middle Eastern feminist vampire romance" is likely to remain an underpopulated cinematic subgenre, but at least it now has a luminous standard-bearer in "A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night." A sly, slinky creeper set in an imaginary Iranian underworld - appropriately realized in glistening black and white - U.S.-based writer-director Ana Lily Amirpour's auspicious debut feature spices its genre stew with elements of Lynchian neo-noir and even spaghetti Western, but the film's pointed, contemporary gender politics are very much its own. No film that revels in extended shots of a poker-faced, hijab-clad Nosferata cruising the streets for blood on a slow-rolling skateboard can be said to be playing things entirely straight, but Amirpour's film also avoids the midnight-madness irreverence that its genre-mashing premise might have invited. Neither, for all of its still-of-the-desert-night atmosphere, is "Girl" an entirely cold-hearted exercise, as it etches a sweet, sad and solemnly fatalistic love story between feeding times. - Variety, Guy Lodge

Ms. Skonberg is "poised to be one of the most versatile and imposing musicians of her generation."(Wall Street Journal) Best known for her knowledge of classic jazz and pursuit of worldwide adventure, she is now creating a style rooted in hot jazz, world percussion, soul, and electronic effects available on her newest album "Into Your Own".

In 2013 she earned a Jazz Journalists' Association nomination for "Up and Coming Jazz Artist of The Year" and has been included in DOWNBEAT Magazine's Rising Star Critics' Poll the last two years. She also was recently honored with a New York Bistro Award for "Outstanding Jazz Artist" and swept the 2014 Hot House Jazz Magazine Awards in all categories nominated: Best Jazz Artist, Best Trumpet, Best Female Vocalist and Best Group for the Bria Skonberg Quartet. Her first professional gig was as a big band singer at age sixteen doubling on trumpet and she has since performed as a bandleader and guest artist at over 50 jazz festivals in North America, Europe, China and Japan. Water Wise NOLA Offers Free Workshop on Rainwater Management at Gentilly Library

April 14, 2015 | New Orleans, LA - On Earth Day 2015, Water Wise New Orleans will offer a free workshop devoted to managing rainwater on home lots. The workshop will be held at the Norman Mayer Library in Gentilly on Wednesday, April 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Please see flyer attached.

How we manage rainwater on our property affects city drainage on a larger scale. The collective impact of individual actions can help improve drainage issues for our streets and neighborhoods. Retaining water strategically on your property means:

    * Less water entering the municipal drainage system

    * Less burden on our pumping system

    * Fewer pollutants in Lake Pontchartrain

    * Less subsidence or sinking and shifting of our streets and foundations

    * Less worry about localized flooding

Water Wise NOLA has put together a workshop lasting an hour and a half to address do-it-yourself, practical, affordable solutions to rainwater management. The workshop will cover the following topics:

    * How to look at the big picture

    * The basics of green infrastructure

    * How to assess drainage on your home lot

    * Recipes for drainage improvements

    * Rain barrel building and installation

Workshop attendees will have the chance to win a free home assessment by Dana Brown & Associates or a free rain barrel. To register go to http://bit.ly/waterwisenola or contact Jeff Supak at (504) 525-2121 or [email protected].

    Sandbar Jazz

The Spring 2014 schedule continues with these respected guest artists:

    April 22 Saxophonist Rick Margitza

    Sandbar Welcomes Rick Margitza

    April 22, Rick Margitza

This week's special Sandbar guest is saxophonist Rick Margitza. He performs with the Monk/Silverbook ensemble, directed by Steve Masakowski, and the Ed Peterson combo.

Margitza, who has long been regarded as one of the Young Lyons of the international jazz scene, is nowadays one of the most respected musicians of his generation. An excellent tenor and soprano saxophonist, mostly inspired by John Coltrane, Michael Brecker and Wayne Shorter, he has managed to expand and develop his unique voice that is highly poetic and sharply incisive.

He started on the violin when he was four. His grandfather was a cellist and his father a violinist with the Detroit Symphony. He then studied classical piano for a bit, and also played oboe before switching to tenor in high school. He attended Wayne State University, Berklee, the University of Miami, and finally Loyola University in New Orleans, where he lived and played for four years. At that time, Rick was touring with Maynard Ferguson and also Flora Purim and Airto Moreira. He then moved to New York in 1988.

That same year he joined Miles Davis' group and recorded three albums with them. He then cut three sets as a leader for the prestigious Blue Note label during 1989-1991. Since 1994, his career found itself enriched with five more solo albums and collaborations with such artists as Maria Schneider, Chick Corea and McCoy Tyner.

The Spring 2015 schedule will conclude with trumpeter Christian Scott on April 29.

Since its earliest years under the American flag, New Orleans has been the site of a major naval presence. Although it is more than 100 miles from the nearest body of open water, the width and depth of the Mississippi River has made our port city accessible for naval vessels of all sizes, types and classes to berth here.

New Orleans' longstanding naval tradition will be celebrated from April 23-29 as NOLA Navy Week returns to the Mississippi Riverfront. During that week, six ships from three nations will line the banks of the river between the French Quarter and the Crescent City Connection bridge. All of these ships will be open to the public for free, on-board tours starting Friday, April 24.

The U.S. Navy is bringing in the USS Wasp, the USS Cole and the USS James E. Williams and the U.S. Coast Guard will be represented by the USCGC Dauntless. The British Royal Navy is represented by the HMS Lancaster and the Royal Canadian Navy will bring in the HMCS Athabaskan.

Other events scheduled that week in conjunction with the event include:

*An official Navy Week Gala held at the National World War II Museum on the night of Friday, April 24.

*A Seafood Cook Off held the morning of Sunday, April 26 at the Spanish Plaza in downtown New Orleans, adjacent to the river and next to the Outlet Collection at Riverwalk. The Cook Off will begin at 11 a.m. and will feature culinary specialists from each of the participating ships, paired with local chefs.

*A fireworks display over the river on the evening of Monday, April 27, with viewing from Woldenberg Riverfront Park and Algiers Point on the opposite bank.

Other events, including musical concerts, may also be scheduled for the week. Check back at the Navy Week website, www.nolanavyweek.com for the latest updates.

    Visitations

All of the ships will be open daily for free general public visitation beginning on Friday, April 24 and ending Tuesday, April 28. Hours of operation vary for each ship throughout the week. Check the schedules for the individual ships in the write-ups below.

Visitors will be allowed on board on a first-come, first-served basis, so be prepared to wait in line during peak times. Because these are active military ships, visitors can also expect security screenings prior to boarding.

    About the Ships

    USS Wasp

The tenth ship to bear the official Navy designation, the Wasp name has a history as long as the United States itself. Warships under that name have seen action and emerged victorious in nearly all conflicts involving the U.S. from the American Revolution through the present. The currently sailing USS Wasp is a U.S. Navy multipurpose amphibious assault ship, launched in 1989 and it is the flagship of the Second Fleet, as well as the lead ship of its class.

The Navy-Marine Corps team's newest amphibious warship has as its primary mission the support of a Marine Landing Force. She and her sister ships are the first specifically designed to accommodate new Landing Craft, Air Cushion (LCAC) for fast troop movement over the beach and certain types of jets that provide close air support for the assault force. The Wasp's dimensions are 843 feet long with a beam (width) of 105 feet, which can accommodate the full range of Navy and Marine Corps helicopters, conventional landing craft, and amphibious vehicles.

It will be docked at 500 Port of New Orleans Place, near Port of New Orleans offices, just upriver from the Crescent City Connection.

The USS Cole made international headlines on October 12, 2000 when it was the target of an al-Qaeda terrorist attack while anchored in the harbor of Aden, Yemen. During the attack, 17 American sailors were killed, 39 were injured and the ship suffered extensive damage to its hull.

The Cole is an Arleigh Burke-class, Aegis-equipped guided missile destroyer. She was built in March 1996. After the 2000 attack, the Cole was repaired and redeployed in 2003. The Cole is 505 feet long with a beam of 66 feet. The ship's motto, "Glory is the Reward of Valor," pays tribute to its namesake, Marine Sergeant Darrell S. Cole.

The Cole will be berthed in the 1200 block of North Peters Street, adjacent to Woldenberg Park.

    Public open visitation times are:

    USS James E Williams

The USS James E. Williams is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer named after Petty Officer 1st Class James Elliot Williams, a Medal of Honor recipient. Its maiden deployment was in May 2006 as part of the Global War on Terrorism Surface Strike Group, and the vessel completed this deployment in October of the same year. In 2007, the USS James E. Williams deployed again as part of the USS Enterprise Carrier Strike Group.

During this deployment, the James E. Williams was contacted by the North Korean cargo vessel, Dai Hong Dan, which had been taken over by Somalian pirates. The ship's crew provided medical assistance to Dai Hong Dan, and safely returned from deployment on December 17, 2007.

The Williams is 509 feet 6 inches long with a beam of 66 feet. It will tie up on the riverfront adjacent to the 1300 block of North Peters Street.

Some of the ship's notable service efforts include the 2005 disaster relief in response to Hurricane Katrina and the disaster relief effort in Haiti after the 2010 earthquake. The Athabaskan is 425.9 feet long with a beam of 49.9 feet, and it has both a hangar and a flight deck. It will berth at 1350 Port of New Orleans Place, alongside the Port of New Orleans office building.

Has your sex life gone downhill after marriage?

    Ann Landers has the answers.

THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS!

    Starring

    Janet Shea

    Directed by

    "Uncle" Wayne Daigrepont

THE LADY WITH ALL THE ANSWERS

For decades, renowned advice columnist Ann Landers answered countless letters from lovelorn teens, confused couples, and a multitude of others in need of advice. No topic was off-limits, including nude housekeeping, sex in a motorcycle helmet, the proper was to hang toilet paper, sibling rivalries, addiction, religion, and wandering spouses. Landers regaled her readers with direct, insightful, and often humorously honest responses. Late on a 1975 night in Landers' Chicago apartment, an ironic twist of events confronts her with a looming deadline for a column dealing with a new kind of heartbreak: her own. As she shares her struggles to complete the column with us, we learn as much about ourselves as we do about the wise, funny, no-nonsense woman whose daily dialogue with America helped shape the social and sexual landscapes of the last half century.

Music Box announces 'Super Secret' concert to accompany New Orleans Jazz Fest

The makers of the Music Box Roving Village, that enchanting assembly of musical architecture in City Park, are planning a "Super Secret" April 24 concert to accompany the first day of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival 2015, which takes place just a few block away

New Orleans stars Quintron, Luke Winslow-King, Rob Cambre and Dustin Louque will perform using the eccentric instruments of the Music Box, joined by Jazz Fest performers whose names will only be announced on the day of the concert. Hence the secrecy.

Whatever guest performers appear at the 8:30 p.m. April 24 concert, the outdoor, largely improvised show will be unlike any other music experience in town.

The Music Box Roving Village: City Park

*What: Music performed in whimsical array of small sculptural dwellings that second as one-of-a-kind musical instruments.

*Where: In City Park near the intersection of Harrison Avenue and Wisner Boulevard.

    *When: April 24 at 8:30 p.m., doors open at 7 p.m.

*Tickets are $20 and are available online.

*More information: Visit the Music Box website.

    http://www.neworleansairlift.org/

Music Box Roving Village in City Park

    The musical shantytown

The Music Box Roving Village: City Park will host concerts with the houses serving as the orchestra. Its  performances are 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

The bright, intricate nests made by bowerbirds inspired Ross Harmon and Frank Pahl's shack, surrounded with heavy chimes tuned to different scales. The inside is completely covered in mosaic mirrors.

Callie Curry (aka Swoon) collaborated with New Orleans blacksmith Darryl Reeves on a gazebo-like structure, detailed with lattice-like brass cuttings and Reeves' brass instruments twisted into the house's frame. A pneumatic switchboard in the center controls the horns

A tall windmill-inspired silo topped with tubes and metal shaped into musical ceiling fans. Slowly pull a rope from the ornate pulley system inside the house and you'll hear the tubes catch air as they turn into resonating chambers bellowing slightly dissonant tones.

"We'll probably have only heard our instruments playing together for the first time the day before, "It'll be sunset when people first arrive. We want them to feel like they've entered an enchanted world. They'll come in, find these musical houses, find their seats - they'll be all over the place - and we'll have a concert that we have no idea what it will sound like."

49th Continuous Season of Early Music Concerts

ALL CONCERTS ARE FREE AND OPEN TO THE PUBLIC UNLESS NOTED OTHERWISE

New Orleans Musica da Camera is the oldest surviving early music organization in the country, founded in 1966 by director Milton G. Scheuermann, Jr. Researching and performing the music of the 10th through 16th centuries, the group is dedicated to making that music current and living for the listeners of the 21st century. Using historically informed performance techniques and reproductions of period instruments (many built by Scheuermann), they also use their own musical transcriptions from original manuscript sources. The ensemble performs in the culturally diverse neighborhoods in and around the Crescent City and throughout the Gulf South, presenting a variety of performances, lectures and workshops. Vox Femin?, the women's vocal ensemble of Musica da Camera, was founded in 1994 by St. Julien. This ensemble focuses on medieval songs and chant, with a special interest in music by or about women.

Intimate Evening Series at Le Petit Theatre to Star

    Terence Blanchard Featuring the E-Collective

NEW ORLEANS, LA - April 14, 2015 -Terence Blanchard featuring the E-collective will perform for one night only in the Intimate Evening Series at Le Petit Theatre during the second weekend of New Orleans' Jazz Festival.  The performance will take place at the 365-seat Le Petit Th??tre du Vieux Carr?. Le Petit Theatre is the oldest playhouse in New Orleans and actors, designers, directors, and technicians, both locally and nationally, have shared their talents to make Le Petit a true shining star in the theatrical world. The intimate, yet electric show will take place on Saturday, May 2nd.

Since top-tier jazz and multiple Grammy-winning trumpeter and composer Terence Blanchard embarked on his solo recording career with his eponymous Columbia Records album in 1991, the New Orleans-born and -based artist has traveled many paths musically, including delivering adventurous and provocative acoustic jazz outings of original material, composing over 50 soundtracks and even, in 2013, debuting Champion: An Opera in Jazz. He has also, in the spirit of his onetime membership in the jazz school of Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers, mentored several musicians in his bands who have gone on to have significant recording careers of their own - including Lionel Loueke, Aaron Parks, Kendrick Scott and one of his current band members Fabian Almazan.

As a leader and co-leader (significantly four albums early in his career with fellow Crescent City artist, saxophonist Donald Harrison), Blanchard has recorded more than 30 albums that often defied genres, yet were still critically acclaimed. But for his latest Blue Note Records album, Breathless, Blanchard powerfully and playfully journeys into another jazz realm with his new quintet, The E-Collective-an exciting zone of grooved fusion teeming with funk, R&B and blues colors.

Tickets for Terence Blanchard on May 2nd are $45.00 for General Seating and $55.00 for Premium Seating.  The doors open at 8:30 p.m. and the shows start at 9:00 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online at www.LePetitTheatre.com.

    New Orleans Saints Preseason:

    Saints Logo 2011

In their four-game 2015 preseason schedule, three of the New Orleans Saints' opponents will be from the AFC, while all four posted winning records in 2014.

The Saints will kick off their 2015 preseason when they travel to face the Baltimore Ravens at M&T Bank Stadium. This will be the second consecutive year that New Orleans will face Baltimore in the preseason. In addition to hosting the Ravens in a 22-13 preseason loss at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome on August 28, 2014, the Saints later dropped a 34-27 home decision to Baltimore on November 24. This will be the first time the Saints play at the Ravens in the preseason. Baltimore holds a 2-0 advantage in the preseason series.

The following week, the Saints will host the New England Patriots in the home opener at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. It will mark the first time that the Saints have hosted the Super Bowl XLIX Champions in the preseason since 1986 and the first time the Saints play a defending Super Bowl champion in the preseason since they played at the Patriots in 2005. New England holds a 6-4 edge in the preseason series.

New Orleans will then host the Houston Texans on Sunday, August 30 in a nationally televised contest on FOX. Kickoff is 3 p.m. CT. The Saints have posted a 4-3 preseason record against the Texans, having faced them in exhibitions in six consecutive years from 2008-13. The Saints are also scheduled to play the Texans in the regular season at NRG Park.

New Orleans will wrap up its preseason slate in Green Bay. The Saints and Packers have not faced each other in the preseason since 2004, a game which was also played at Lambeau Field. New Orleans defeated Green Bay 44-23 on October 26, 2014 at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in their last meeting. This year's contest will be the ninth preseason meeting between the two teams, with the Packers holding a 6-2 edge.

The works come from a single private collection.

    February 21 - May 24, 2015

Location: Woldenberg Art Center (bldg #81) - Tulane University

Featuring drawings, prints, sculpture, and photographs, all from a single private collection, the exhibition illuminates the background and personality of Degas the individual, as well as to present his skill as an artist. The show's subject matter is often personal: In addition to three rare self-portraits, depictions of family members and friends are also included. Works touch upon three notable themes of Degas' oeuvre: the human body, horse racing, and the ballet.  Enriching the exhibition are a selection of more than forty works on paper of well-known artists, many of whom were friends of Degas.

ST. PAUL LUTHERAN CHURCH & SCHOOL CELEBRATES 175 YEARS!

What do the following have in common? Alexander Graham Bell's telephone, Thomas Edison's light bulb, Carl Benz's automobile, and Simon Hubig's pies?  St. Paul Lutheran Church and School at 2624 Burgundy Street in the Marigny, has been around longer than all of them!

St. Paul was founded in 1840, and was in existence before the invention of the telephone, the light bulb, the automobile, and Hubig's pies! Originally meeting in a firehouse on Chartres Street, a group of German immigrants met for a protestant church service which marked the beginning of St. Paul Lutheran Church, as we know it today.  Later that year, a German church school was added.

St. Paul Lutheran, on the corner of Port and Burgundy, has a rich history in the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood.  It has persevered through many tragedies, including two fires, yellow fever, and the Civil War. During Katrina and the harrowing days thereafter, our church was Ground Zero for the people in our surrounding neighborhood (http://jsr.fsu.edu/Katrina/Goodline.htm). The months and years after the storm found our members and school families spread across the state and country. Yet there was no question that once again St. Paul would remain and continue our mission in its present community. We are proud that although our membership spreads throughout the greater New Orleans area (as depicted in our logo), we continue to stay true to our roots in the Marigny, Bywater, and St. Roch area.  Many members have now chosen this community as their home, as well as a vibrant neighborhood they want to celebrate and improve. Moreover, generations of families send their children to our school and are happy to be a part of our church and neighborhood.

St. Paul Lutheran continues to support the surrounding neighborhoods and their associations.  We offer building space for meetings and community events, as well as an accessible forum for civic issues.  We also enjoy hosting our own events that draw our neighbors and us together whether it be for fellowship, spirituality, or support.  We will continue to build upon our relationship of love and service to all those inside and outside the doors of St. Paul.

This year marks the 175th anniversary of God's grace and love at St. Paul, and YES...we are celebrating! Our theme LOVE ALIVE@ 175 is based on I John in the 4th chapter, "We love because he first loved us."  St. Paul Church and School continues to thrive in its original neighborhood by sharing our love with each other and everyone around us because God first loved us.  We want to share our joy and thankfulness by celebrating this momentous year with our present and former church members, alumni, community, and new friends and visitors.  Four major events have been scheduled which reflect our history and current dedication to EDUCATION, MUSIC, FAITH and COMMUNITY!  As our church and school celebrate this year, we continue to reach out to ALL...and welcome YOU to be a part of God's love!
