Diana Nawi "Breaks the Code" at EXPO Chicago 2016
by robin dluzen

Associate Curator at the PĂ©rez Art Museum Miami, Diana Nawi initially began her career in the arts in a studio program. Even so, Nawi knew early on that curating was her calling. After achieving a masters degree in contemporary art history at Williams College Graduate Program  in Massachusetts, she spent 10 years working in art institutions around the country, from small nonprofits to major museums. In recent years, ...

Neighboring exhibitions offer complementary visions of modern art.

Two Orange County museums, separated by a mere eight miles on Pacific Coast Highway, are presenting illustrative yet divergent shows of modern art. Laguna Art Museum's "Peter Krasnow: Maverick Modernist," opened mid-summer and runs through September 25, with paintings and sculptures by this significant artist (1886-1979), whose works were, nevertheless, shown only sporadically throughout his career and afterward. "Jonathan Schipper, Cubicle"
at Rice University Art Gallery
October 16, 2016 - January 8, 2017

Jonathan Schipper, known for his time-based, kinetic installations, will create Cubicle , a new installation for Rice Gallery. Schipper's works reveal the flow of time as imperceptible until, as in life, we see the physical evidence of its passing. In his Slow Inevitable Death of American Muscle , 2008, two full-size automobiles crush into one another to simulate the force of a 30 mph head-on collision slowed down to unfold over several days. For Cubicle , Schipper will construct an office setting that will undergo subtle, yet inescapable changes over two months..

" Degas: A New Vision"
at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston
October 16, 2016 - January 8, 2017

This fall, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, will be the exclusive U.S. venue for Degas: A New Vision, the most significant international survey in three decades of the work of Hilaire-Germain-Edgar Degas (1834-1917). While Degas's reputation has often been confined to his ballet imagery, the artist's oeuvre is rich, complex, and abundant, spanning the entire second half of the 19th century and the first years of the 20th. Opening October 16, Degas: A New Vision will assemble some 200 works from public and private collections around the world, and showcase Degas's abiding interests across painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and sculpture....

Spotlight: Houston Curators
With the departure of one leading figure, and several new additions to the city's art scene, Houston curators and directors discuss what makes the region so unique.
by nancy zastudil

As of September 1 of this year, Claudia Schmuckli, director and chief curator since 2009 at Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston, steps into her new role as curator in charge of contemporary art at the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco. Her departure points a spotlight on Houston as the museum begins a national search for new leadership of its increasingly ambitious programming. What other arts leaders have been drawn to Houston and how are they making an impact? Conversely, how has this city made an impact on them?  ...
