KAC 50th Anniversary in 2013!

The Kingston Arts Council will soon be celebrating its 50th birthday.

In 1962 a group of concerned Kingston residents successfully campaigned to save and revitalize the Grand Theatre. That group of arts advocates went on to form the Kingston Arts Council, (now the oldest arts council in Ontario),  and the Grand Theatre has become Kingston's premier performing arts venue.

In the fall of 2012 the Kingston Arts Council and Grand Theatre will hold a joint birthday celebration to commemorate our 50th anniversary. As part of our festivities we want to include stories and interviews from people who have been involved with the KAC over the last 50 years, KAC/Grand Theatre collaborations, and any other tidbits you think would be of interest to share. If you also have contact information for people you think we should contact that would also be appreciated.

We'll also be hiring a 50th Anniversary Coordinator - a position made possible by the Job Creation Program... stay tuned to our website/facebook for more details soon.

We want to hear from you so please contact us at info@artskingston.ca!

Have you received the Arts Guide yet?

arts_guide_2012
The 2012 Arts Guide was launched last month! If you advertised in the Guide, you should have already been contacted regarding pick up or delivery of guides for display in your business. We are also in the process of delivering guides to major tourist attractions and art hubs throughout Kingston and the surrounding area. The guides are also be available during KAC office hours from the KAC Office at 253 Ontario St, Suite 203.

If you have distribution suggestions, would like to volunteer your time, or have not yet been contacted about picking up your guides, please contact project@artskingston.ca

Interest growing in the Tett Centre project!

On Thursday, July 12th, a crowd of approximately 100 people gathered to learn about the J.K. Tett Centre project and its future tenants. Attendees received an overview of the Tett Centre and Isabel Bader Centre projects, and were introduced to the tenants of the Tett Centre through their presentations. The tenants of the Tett Centre will be:
- Kingston School of Dance
- Modern Fuel Artist-Run Centre
- The Potters' Guild
- Kingston Handloom Spinners & Weavers
- Theatre Kingston
- Salon Theatre/Macdonald Project
- Joe's M.I.L.L. (Musical Instrument Lending Library)
- Kingston Lapidary Club

If you wish to learn more about the Tett Centre project, please visit the City of Kingston website and keep an eye out on our website for videos of presentations from the Pecha Kucha!

Thank you for supporting our annual fundraising concert with Old Man Luedecke and the Gertrudes!

Old Man Luedecke
Thanks to your enthusiasm, Old Man Luedecke and the Gertrudes played to a sold out show at our Annual Fundraising Concert! The success of this night was a great way to begin Skeleton Park Music Festival, which was also a great success.

Culture Days is a collaborative coast-to-coast-to-coast volunteer movement to raise the awareness, accessibility, participation and engagement of Canadians in the arts and cultural life of their communities. Thousands of activity organizers self-mobilize at the grassroots level to present and coordinate free public activities that take place throughout the country over the last weekend of September each year.

The third annual Culture Days weekend will take place September 28, 29 and 30, 2012, and will feature thousands of free, hands-on, interactive activities that invite the public to participate "behind-the-scenes," to discover the world of artists, creators, historians, architects, curators, designers and other creative people in their communities.

If you want to be a part of this nation-wide celebration of arts and culture, simply register your free participatory or interactive event at
