A Weekend of Fests     

March 30-April 1, 2012 


The Tomball Sister City Organization presents the 2012 Tomball German Heritage Festival, March 30-April 1.   It is a Music/Street festival celebrating German and ethnic heritage with 4 stages of live music, ethnic and festival food, fireworks, carnival, street performers, and much more. 

 

The 14th Annual SpringFest Wine and Art Festival, featuring local wineries showcasing top Texas wines, micro-brewed beer tastings and original art work from local artists, takes place in Historic Old Town Spring March 31- April 1.   

 

The Japan-America Society of Houston provides a wide variety of opportunities to absorb the rich and diverse culture of Japan at the Houston Japan Festival, March 31 and April 1! Each year, the event provides a rich blend of stage entertainment and an impressive array of food and beverages for everyone to enjoy.    

 

The 2nd Houston Palestinian Festival presented by the Palestinian American Cultural Center will take place March 31-April 1, sharing and celebrating Palestinian art and culture. Great weather, great food, and the great fun of folkloric and contemporary art and music.  

 

The Houston Children's Festival, the largest children's festival in the United States, is gearing up for its 24th year March 31 and April 1. The Houston Children's Festival offers five stages of music and entertainment and more than 300 exciting activities, music, crafts, exhibits, participatory games, sports and rides.  

 

The 32nd Annual Ukrainian Easter Bazaar, Sunday, April 1, is a Ukrainain spring festival for the whole family. Learn the art of making Ukrainian Easter eggs (pysanky). Plus ethnic foods, dance and crafts.

College of the Mainland Community Theatre presents Art, the award-winning comedy by Yasmina Reza, March 29 - April 29.

The Masquerade Theatre continues its 2011-2012 season with the popular, musical classic Cabaret, March 29, 30 & 31 at Barnevelder Movement/Arts Complex.

BIG NAME COMEDY:  Stand-up comedian, movie, and TV star Sinbad returns to The Grand !894 Opera House with his "tickle your funny bone" talent for one encore performance on Friday, March 30. The Improv Comedy Showcase and Restaurant presents Kevin Nealon, March 30 & 31.

Kingwood Dance Theatre presents the delightful storybook ballet,  Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Company directors Sheryl Rowland and Kelly Agnew "conjured up" the enchanting choreography performed by over one hundred local dancers, March 30-April 1.

Sirrom Studio & Spanish DanzArt Society present the flamenco production Aire, Saturday, March 31st. Featuring Choreography Award winners Antonio Granjero, Estefania Ramirez, & the EntreFlamenco Company.

PLUS: Co-Sponsored by Dance Salad Festival and the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, it's the  10th Annual Dance Salad Festival Choreographers' Forum, Wednesday, April 4. Held the day before the opening of the Dance Salad Festival at Wortham Center, the forum offers a glimpse at the creative process of some of the festival's invited choreographers from Europe.

FILM: Russian Cultural Center Our Texas presents a Movie Screening: The Harvest Time, set on a collective farm circa 1950, Friday, March 30.  Rice University-Dept. of Visual and Dramatic Art, Rice Cinema, and Mountainfilm present the inaugural showing of Mountainfilm in Telluride on Tour in Houston, dedicated to educating and inspiring audiences about issues that matter, cultures worth exploring, and more, March 30 and  March 31. The Menil Collection presents the exhibition This World Is Not My Home: Danny Lyon Photographs, featuring work by a leading and explosively creative figure in the American street photography movement of the 1960s. On view March 30 - July 29. New Terra Cotta Warriors! Warriors, Tombs, and Temples: China's Enduring Legacy is at the Houston Museum of Natural Science March 30 through September 3. Project Row Houses is pleased to announce the opening of seven new art projects in the historic shotgun houses on Holman St. Round 36 will be on view from March 31-June 24, and features installations by artists based in Houston, Los Angeles, and New York.  


Caroline Collective is pleased to announce the unveiling Saturday, March 31 of Building Life, a large mural designed by Raul Gonzalez for the exterior of Caroline Collective. The Orange Show Center for Visionary Art presents an Orange Show Eyeopener Tour: Art+Science , Sunday, April 1, Right brain and left brain; are they opposites or two different sides of the same coin? We'll visit examples of the way artists visualize science, and scientists create art.

PLUS: In conjunction with the annual Art in the Park in Russ Pitman Park, it's the Art in the Park Tour with Divya Murthy, an evening tour of the art pieces out along the trails with this year's curator, Wednesday, April 4.

Also on the 29th, The Woodlands Concert Band presents The Golden Age of Bands, their 2012 Spring concert series. Mercury Baroque presents The Virtuoso Violin, featuring Superstar Baroque violinist Monica Huggett (pictured, photo credit: Jerome Hart and George Hixson):  March 30, in the Wortham Center, Cullen Theater and March 31, at The Clarion at Brazosport College.

March 30 through April 3, The Moores School of Music at the University of Houston presents the opera Der Rosenkavalier, a  comedy for music in three acts by Richard Strauss. Houston Pride Band and Bayou City Performing Arts present In With The New, Saturday, March 31, featuring contemporary band classics. Lone Star College-CyFair presents Songs From A Dream of Red Mansions, Saturday, March 31, a heartbroken love story from the Qing Dynasty of China.

AvantGarden presents Queering the Pitch: Justin Dougherty, Violoncello. Saturday, March 31, Cellist Justin Dougherty will present a recital of solo cello music by gay composers. How does the synergy of music and visuals enhance our enjoyment of both? Musiqa and Aurora Picture Show unite to answer this questions with our annual collaborative offering Key Images, a concert featuring an range of eclectic works for piano by Musiqa's composers, and showcasing two films curated by Aurora, March 31. The Bach Society Houston presents Abendmusik: Music for Passiontide, Sunday, April 1 and Friday, April 6.

Cypress Creek FACE presents Ricky Nelson Remembered Saturday, March 31, a unique multimedia entertainment event featuring the music of Ricky Nelson's hit songs, and featuring his twin sons Matthew and Gunnar Nelson. Taking center stage at Galveston's Grand 1894 Opera House on Saturday, March 31st and Sunday, April 1st will be the internationally-acclaimed entertainer, Ronnie Milsap

 

On Saturday, March 31, Houston will get a major case of the BLUES! Playing the Reliant Arena, it's the Annual H-Town Blues Festival.   Sam Houston Race Park presents the Sam Houston Race Park 2012 Concert Series.  Saturday, March 31 featuring Puddle of Mudd.   Performing all the hits you love, New Edition is coming to Reliant Arena on April 1, to celebrate their 30th Anniversary Tour!

 

The HAA Folklife and Traditional Arts Program & the Houston Museum of African American Culture present Global Gospel: African Roots, American Sounds, Saturday, March 31,  a showcase of three rousing styles of sacred music based in the African Diaspora.
