Welcome
Introducing Our New Seminarian, Becca Kello
By Elizabeth Tesi, Associate Rector

Meet Becca Kello, our Seminarian!  Becca is an Anglican Studies Student from Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria.  (Anglican Studies Students are typically students who got their M.Div. from a non-Episcopal Seminary. They do a one-year program at an Episcopal seminary or divinity school to learn Anglican-specific theology and liturgy.)

Becca's learning goals will focus on Episcopal liturgy and on adult Christian Education.  She will be attending administrative meetings throughout the year, preaching in the spring, and taking various roles in the services.  In order to experience as many varieties of the service as possible, Becca will be rotating through the different service times: Sunday morning, Sunday evening, and Wednesday noon.

A seminarian field education student is different from a traditional intern.  Typically, interns are given jobs to do by their boss and do a lot of "grunt work".   In field ed, a student has a much more carefully structured set of learning goals, usually designed with their field ed supervisor, and specifically focused on helping them refine a few areas of learning as they prepare for parish work.  A seminarian's time, in addition to the visible work in the service, includes weekly supervision, monthly meetings with a field ed committee, and a number of papers and sessions of groupwork with seminary colleagues!  Becca will be supervised by Elizabeth, who has been supervising seminarians for several years.  Her lay committee consists of a representative variety of St. John's parishioners.

In the spring, Becca will graduate and be ordained in the Episcopal Church!

Please take the time on Sunday morning to introduce yourself to Becca as she meets our community.

Hurricane Relief
Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Please join me in continuing to hold the victims of Hurricane Matthew in your prayers.  In the wake of the devastation, St. John's will be contributing $2,000 to relief work through two organizations: Episcopal Relief and Development and Food For The Poor.  If you feel moved to contribute to the needs of the hurricane victims and to the areas most impacted, you may do so by making a check out to St. John's with "Hurricane Relief" on the memo line.

Grace and peace to you.

Chorister's Prayer
By Anne Timpane, Music Director

Bless O Lord us your servants,
who minister in your temple.
Grant that what we sing with our lips
we may believe in our hearts,
and what we believe in our hearts
we may show forth in our lives;
through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Chorister's Prayer (printed above) is at the heart of St. John's music program. It guides us in our work and reminds us that our purpose is not to entertain, but, through music, to point people to God.

The prayer first appeared in the Choristers' Pocket Book published by the Royal School of Church Music (RSCM) in 1934. Despite being so well known, the prayer is variously attributed to the RSCM's founder, Sir Sydney Nicholson, or to Cosmo Gordon Lang, who became Archbishop of Canterbury in 1929.

Our Alleluia, Children's and St. John's choirs say this prayer at the beginning of rehearsals as a way of focusing the group's energy on our common purpose. Whether we are working on an anthem or hymn, the words that we "sing with our lips" act as our guide, shaping and directing how we phrase each line in the music.

The choirs often hear me say, "Sing it like you mean it!" My words (spoken only in kindness) are a gentle reminder that we need to "believe in our hearts" before the words of our songs will be heard as true songs of thanks and praise to God.
Thank You

October 16th Forum: Millennial Voices - Idealistic and Concerned
On October 16, 2016 at 10:10 am, please join us in the Parish Hall for a conversation with fellow parishioner and Sunday school teacher Shirley Sagawa,  the founder and CEO of Service Year Alliance, an architect of AmeriCorps, and former deputy chief of staff to First Lady Hillary Clinton.   Shirley will share her insights on "Millennial Voices: Idealistic and Pragmatic, Connected and Concerned."

The term "millennial" was coined at the turn of the 21 st century to describe young people born after 1980, the children and grandchildren of Baby Boomers.  The conversation with Shirley, however, will focus more specifically on young people born after 1995, those who were very young children on 9/11 or were born after that event.   Shirley will discuss and take questions on the values, expectations and behaviors of young people for whom "the new normal" is the only reality they have ever experienced.

Anne Derse will moderate the Forum and initiate the Q&A session following Shirley's remarks.

October 23rd Forum: Understanding the Lives of Teens
On October 23rd at 10:10 AM, please join us in the Parish Hall for a conversation with Dr. Donna Jones, where we will discuss the challenges facing teens, as well as their personal strengths and potential.

Dr. Jones is Principal of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School, a school notable not only for the achievement of its students, but also its great diversity. B-CC is a rapidly growing school (over 2,000 students), and is in the midst of a major, multi-year renovation designed to house an even larger student body.  Dr. Jones has a unique perspective on what is on the minds of students, about their critical needs, and what opportunities she wishes existed to allow for their meaningful contributions.

Anne Derse will moderate the Forum discussion and facilitate audience questions. Parishioners and the public are welcomed.

Make a Difference
Montgomery County Hospice Workshop on October 17th
We've all been there - a friend shares the news that a parent is dying, or we see via shared social media that someone has lost a dear one.  Perhaps a coworker has lost a spouse, or the next-door neighbor mentions they lost a job, or you came to the Blessing of the Animals service and learned that the person sitting next to you had lost a beloved pet.

What do we do?  What can we say?  How can we express the right sentiment, or offer our prayers to our St. John's friends?  When we don't want to add to a person's pain, but we feel at a loss to find the right words or actions to help, where can we turn for guidance?

On Oct. 17, at 6:30 pm, Montgomery County Hospice's grief counselors will be coming to us to discuss "How to Help a Grieving Friend".   Come and learn what helps - listening techniques, good conversation openers, and even how to support a friend without words.  We will learn what is not helpful to say, and how we can be a gracious and supportive person to our friends as they start a journey of grief.

(This event is the first in our program year partnership with Montgomery County Hospice.  On December 11 at 6PM, we will hold a Blue Christmas service, open to all who carry a heavy heart during the holidays.  Beginning in January, Montgomery County Hospice will be hosting a grief group here at St. John's Norwood.  Information and registration for that group will be coming shortly, and you may always contact me for additional information at any time.)

Support Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington as it celebrates its 30th Anniversary!
Along with other Episcopal parishes in the area, St. John's has had a long and significant partnership with Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington (SMGW).  I'm happy to announce that SMGW will be holding its annual Gala/Auction fundraiser at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church in northwest DC on Saturday, November 5 beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The theme this year is "Stepping Into a New Future" and I hope you'll consider joining us for food, drinks, and auctions - both live and silent.  This is also exciting because of the recent integration of SMGW and STRIVE DC.  In August, STRIVE became a component part of the Samaritan Ministry of Greater Washington's innovative Next Step approach to positive life-change. STRIVE's rigorous job readiness training and placement program expands and strengthens Samaritan's Next Step Program, which serves more than 1,000 people each year who are homeless or otherwise in need.

Gala tickets are $100 and benefit SMGW's Next Step program. SMGW staff and volunteers provide program participants the resources and support they need, such as housing and employment search guidance, coaching, and referrals to partner service providers, to fulfill their goals.

I am also soliciting donations for the auction from St. John's parishioners; if you would like to donate an item, vacation home, or gift certificate, please see/email Liz Everhart ( lizeverhart9[A]gmail.com).

For more information, or if you are interested in attending or donating, please see/email Liz Everhart ( lizeverhart9[A]gmail.com.)   Hope to see you there on Saturday, November 5 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Stephen and the Incarnation Episcopal Church in Washington, DC.
