Viewing the 2017 Solar Eclipse Safely

Millions of Americans plan to watch the August 21 solar eclipse and have already purchased solar eclipse glasses or handheld solar viewers. The American Astronomical Society warns that some of these glasses and viewers are counterfeit , sold by disreputable vendors trying to cash in on this rare event. Watching the eclipse with fake protective gear can cause permanent eye damage. Only glasses and viewers verified by an accredited testing laboratory to meet ISO 12312-2 are safe to use when viewing the eclipse. This standard requires glasses and viewers to be thousands of times darker than typical sunglasses.

It may be difficult to tell the difference between genuine protective gear and fake glasses/viewers as some counterfeit makers are placing ISO labels on them. Visit the American Astronomical Society's website for tips on how to determine which glasses or handheld solar viewers are safe . Visit NASA's website for additional tips on how to observe the eclipse safely.

The Woodfield Area Children's Organization has partnered with GameWorks in hosting a diaper drive. For every package of diapers donated, you will be given a one-hour game card. GameWorks is located at 601 N. Martingale. For more information, email Angie  or call (847) 239-0461.

Call JULIE Before Any Excavation Projects

Before starting any excavation project, remember to put you and your family's safety first by calling JULIE. State law  requires you to notify JULIE at least two business days (excludes weekends and holidays) before any  digging project regardless of the project size or depth. JULIE is a free service. Equally important is
for contractors who have requested JULIE to pull the flags at the locates when they no longer need them. This will avoid any confusion once the project is completed. For more information about JULIE or to submit a locate service request, visit the JULIE website or dial 811.

grantVillage Receives Cook County Grant to Improve Traffic Flow
The Village of Schaumburg has been awarded a $200,000 grant from Cook County through the Invest in Cook grant program for the Greater Woodfield Area Traffic Flow Improvements. The grant will provide funding to optimize the transportation network through the signal improvements and installation of video detection technology at seven key village intersections:
  • Woodfield Road and National Parkway
  • Woodfield Road and Meacham Road
  • Meacham Road and American Lane
  • Meacham Road and Remington Road
  • Meacham Road and Tower/McConnor Parkway
  • Meacham Road and Thoreau Drive
  • Meacham Road and Drummer Drive
Similar investments are being made on federally funded projects on Plum Grove Road between IL-72 and IL-58 and on Woodfield Road between Meacham Road and East Frontage Road.

The goal of the project will be to improve mobility in the Woodfield area, enhance the safety of the roadway network, and to improve the village's ability to manage traffic along these busy roadway corridors. The project was developed in response to feedback obtained through the village's 2016 National Citizen Survey, which residents indicated a top priority was to improve traffic flow and signal timing in the village.

The system will not be used to monitor driver behavior for infractions for the purpose of issuing citations.

For more information on the project, contact Karyn Robles in the village's Transportation Department or dial 311 in the village.
reforestReforestation Information For Residents Affected by July 21 Storm
Residents who lost trees in their parkway due to the July 21 microburst storm and would like to see those trees replaced sooner than what is otherwise scheduled can take advantage of the village's cost-share program. To take advantage of this program, the resident will be required to pay a percentage of the replacement cost for an approximately 2-inch diameter tree. Participants will receive a hand-delivered letter requesting their first and second selections when ordering trees to increase the chances that a tree of your choice will be available. Species and pricing can be found on the village's website If an individual participates in the cost-share program, they could have the opportunity to have their tree planted as soon as this fall.

Payments for the cost-share program can be made at the finance counter at the Robert O. Atcher Municipal Center, 101 Schaumburg Court. Payments will also be taken online through the village's secure payment portal, WebPay, beginning this fall. For questions or concerns, contact Justin Briski  or dial 311 in the village.

The village intends to replace parkway trees that were cut down due to the storm. Affected locations will be added to the reforestation schedule that is currently in place to replace Ash trees that were removed as a result of the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB). The village has removed approximately 9,500 trees due to the EAB and still has 4,500 sites to replant, so trees removed from the July 21 storm will be added to the end of the list and scheduled to be replaced in 2021.

Congratulations to Schaumburg's Trickster Art Gallery for receiving the Illinois Veterans' Business and Appreciation Award for Fourth Quarter, Fiscal Year 2017 by the Illinois Department of Veterans' Affairs. This award recognizes and honors the value of community service, specifically service that has significantly helped veterans.  Located at 190 S. Roselle Road, Trickster Art Gallery is the only Native American owned and operated arts institution in the State of Illinois. They lead the nation in documenting and preserving the stories of Native American veterans for educational purposes.

The award ceremony took place Aug. 16 at Trickster Art Gallery with many veterans and their families in attendance. State and local government officials also participated in the ceremony as guest speakers to recognize the efforts made by Trickster Art Gallery on behalf of veterans.

The Illinois Veterans' Patriotic Business and Appreciation Award is awarded quarterly. The four businesses that received the award now qualify for the Illinois Patriotic Business and Appreciation Award that will be announced in 2018.
garbageGarbage Cart Update
Delivery of the new garbage and recycling carts for single family residences throughout the village is now complete. Residents who wish to exchange their cart for a different size than what they originally selected should contact Republic Services directly at (847) 981-0091 to coordinate the delivery of a new cart at no cost until mid-September.

Storing the New Carts
Garbage and recycling carts should be stored inside the garage or behind the home until garbage pickup. If carts are stored next to the home outside, they must be screened from view. To screen the carts from view, residents may plant some shrubs or other landscaping that will provide year-round screening. Another option is for residents to install a wing-wall, which requires a permit. For information on building permits, visit the village's website .

The village's Code Enforcement Division will be inspecting residential areas and educating residents on proper storage locations with warnings. Questions about storage requirements can be directed to 311 or (847) 923-3700 and an inspector can either visit the property or speak with residents via phone.

How to Put Out the New Carts
On pickup day, garbage and recycling carts should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. for pickup. When putting carts out at the curb, place them side by side with cart handles facing the property and the lid opening toward the street. Arrows are marked on the lid of the cart to remind residents which way the cart should face to ensure Republic Services' trucks can easily pick up the carts to dispose of its contents.

Old Trash Can/Recycling Bin Disposal
Residents who wish to dispose of old trash cans or recycling bins must label "Take for Trash" and place out on the regular collection day. Residents who previously rented a cart must call Republic Services at (847) 981-0091 to arrange for removal of the cart. A dumpster for recycling old plastic trash cans or recycling bins has been made available at Engineering and Public Works located at 714 S. Plum Grove Road and can be accessed at any time through the end of August. Please enter at the light, pass Fire Station 55 and look for the blue dumpster on the left side by the gas pumps. Dial 311 in the village with any questions.
