This Week at St. Michael's
Children's Chapel
Children's Chapel, for kids age 3-9, meets during the first 40 minutes of worship service, and includes music, a Bible lesson which follows the weekly readings we use in church, and fun activities or crafts. The kids join their families at the time of the Peace to take communion with the congregation. The kids gather with their chapel leaders in the Children's Chapel room, at the east end of the Preschool wing, beginning at 8:50 for the 9:00 service; for  chapel during the 11:15 service, kids will gather in the chapel room at 11:10.
Godly Play and Youth Classes
Godly Play, for kids age 3 - 9 meets during the education hour, beginning at 10:15 in the Godly Play room - across from the preschool classrooms in the east wing of the parish hall. Godly Play is a story-telling style of worship with roots in Montessori.  We explore the mystery of God's presence in our lives, as we believe that all children already know God, but they need gentle instruction on how to grow into that knowledge.  We explore religious language using parables, sacred stories, liturgical action, art, prayer, and silence. We always welcome new children, as each week's lesson stands alone, although the lessons follow the arc of the story of God's people, so coming week to week offers perspective on both Old Testament knowledge (in the fall) and the story of the life of Jesus (after Christmas through spring).
Adult Forums

The Writings and Life of Julian of Norwich
September 22 - October 27, 6:30 - 8 p.m., led by Judith Jenkins and Kay Veal.
Kay and Judith will introduce Julian of Norwich and lead discussion of her mystical writing.

Newcomers Class
Classes will be held every Tuesday evening, beginning September 29 through November 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in the Parish Hall. An optional Retreat will be held in January followed by a special Confirmation Service (both dates to be determined).
A Small Thing
Dear Friends,

Some of you have commented on the fact that the "Reserved for Clergy" signs in the parking lot are gone. Yes, we made the decision that having those signs posted in front of the church, in a community that tries to emphasize our common life together, was a bit incongruous-and so we quietly retired them to the shed.

That's a small thing, but it is representative of the larger theme that this weekend's "Renewal of Ministries" celebration is intended to set: that we are together seeking to "Build God's Kingdom," and that each of us has an equal place in that aspiration.

To that end, in designing the service for the day we made the decision to avoid the service for the "institution of a new rector" in the Book of Common Prayer, opting instead to create a more inclusive liturgy (based on the alternative Enriching Our Worship service) that will ask each of us to renew our individual commitment to love both God and our neighbor.

As the incoming rector, I will be asked to commit myself to "this new trust and responsibility," but then the wardens and vestry will likewise be asked to "renew their pledge to be leaders of building God's kingdom in this place." Then the clergy associated with the parish will make a similar commitment; then the leaders of the various ministries of the parish; and finally the whole parish will be asked to stand to "affirm our desire to love and serve the Lord as we are able, both in our church, our families, our places of work, and in our daily life."

Faithfully,

Fr. Joe
Casa San Miguel
Casa San Miguel Food Pantry will host our fifth annual Burrito Breakfast Fundraiser on Sunday, October 18 .  This is our one and only fundraiser and we want it to be a fun event for the whole church.  The cost this year will be $10 per burrito - same as all the past years.  We are buying the burritos from El Modelo - the best in town - and we will have both meat and vegetarian burritos.  We will sell advance tickets on Sunday, October 4 and October 11, and the breakfast will be on the 18th.  You can take the burritos home or have them for breakfast in the church hall.  We will have tables set up and have plates and plasticware.  We will also provide coffee, juice, and salsa.  Please plan to join us on the 18th for a great family event.
Jewelry Exchange
The Jewelry Exchange this year was a glittering success!!  We had such a good time going through all the beautiful baubles that we have EXTENDED the offer!  There is still a lot of nice jewelry for the taking - well, in exchange for your donation to the building fund, that is!  Come by the office and do some shopping!
So far we have raised $1,090.00 - and all of it goes to the building fund!  Many thanks to everyone who donated jewelry, who participated in the event and for the great women who assisted Kathryn in setting up, cleaning up, and bringing refreshments.  And remember... forgive everyone and wear great jewelry!
Breakfast at St. Martin's
This Sunday Oct 4th is sign up day for serving and providing breakfast at St Martin's Hospitality Center on October 11th. We will not be able to use the kitchen, so we do not need casseroles, but will be serving our usual hard boiled eggs, fruit, tortillas, etc. Cash donations are always welcome, as we  will need to purchase burritos to serve instead of casseroles. Please stop by our table in the Parish Hall to learn more about our service at St. Martins -  it's fun and easy!
Community Connections
Community Connections is collecting knit and crochet hats, scarves, head bands and gloves for our adopted schools, La Luz and MacArthur Elementary Schools. We will collect those items on October 4 and 11. We will be on the patio between services to take your offerings. Any questions, please contact Rhoda Parker at 821-1992
Thank You
Maribelle and Ken Ogilvie want to thank everyone who helped them with the potluck on Sunday after Fr. Joe's installation service. So in addition to Maribelle and Ken, a big thank you goes out to John Teel, Holly Pence, Anne Davis, Eve Elsner, Rhoda Parker, Bernice Gill and Albert Gonzales, David Martin, Mary Schwartz, Marta Van Der Geest, Linda Towle, Maia DeRosear, and anyone else whose name we have inadvertently left off!
It takes a lot of willing hands to do these big events and we are most grateful!!
Conversations w/ Fr. Joe
During the months of October and November, the Vestry of St. Michael's invites you to take part in one of our intimate conversations with our new rector, the Rev. Joseph Britton.
We will be hosting several meetings at church members' homes across Albuquerque at a variety of times and days of week in an attempt to give everyone access to a meeting that best fits into daily life. Light refreshments will be provided.
The attendance for each meeting will be limited to 10-20 so please sign up for the one you will be able to attend.
To sign up please email [email protected]  and include how many are planning to attend and their names along with contact information. Please make sure to include both your primary and secondary choices as spaces are expected to fill up fast.  A confirmation email will be sent out with specifics before the date of each meeting.

High Scorers
The second Thursday of October falls on the 8th, and that is when St Michael's seniors will be getting together for the monthly High Scorers pot luck lunch in the church hall,  We gather at 12 noon, and new High Scorers are always wellcome.  It's informal, it's congenial, and it's fun.  No age limits, upper or lower.  If bringing a dish is a problem, come anyway; there's always plenty.

Becoming One w/ God
Becoming One with God: A Celebration of Saint Teresa of Avila's 500 th Birthday
Led by Fr. Francis Dorff, O.Praem.

Saturday, October 17, 9:30 a.m.-Noon, Santa Maria de la Vid Abbey/Norbertine Spirituality Center, 5825 Coors Blvd. SW, Abq.

If there ever was a subtitle to Saint Teresa's life, it would have to be "becoming one with God."   Basically, that is what her whole life and all of her spiritual teaching is about.  That is why she was suspected of being a heretic in her day.  And that is why she was subsequently recognized by the Catholic Church to be a saint, a prophetic reformer, a mystic, an extraordinary spiritual guide, a gifted theologian, and a very holy Christian woman.  In the first half of this morning, we will let Saint Teresa show us the way through the magnificent Interior Castle in which our own soul lives and in which we become fully one with God.  This morning will combine brief presentations with time for reflection, comments, questions and discussion.

No registration is required; free-will offerings are appreciated.
