Reflection for Worship . . .

Easter Bible Reading Mark 16:1-8

As we move through Holy Week we are all invited to join the journey of Jesus as he engages the powers of the world and models how to live with great integrity. We are invited to reflect on the betrayal and suffering that Jesus endured long ago to bring God's message of love to us. On Thursday evening we will gather to hear the story of the Last Supper and the time in Gethsemane the night before his death. On Friday afternoon we are invited up to the Altadena Community Church to walk their interactive Stations of the Cross. And on Saturday we are urged to reflect on all the ways that death and suffering still persist in our world and are in need of God's power and our attention to relieve it. All of this will prepare us to come to the tomb on Sunday morning with the others and hear the assurance from our God that death and despair is never the final word, but that resurrection and new life prevail. We hope you will join us this week as we celebrate that reality anew and live as people of the living Christ. See details below on times and spaces for the services.

May God bless you richly as you reflect on these themes during Holy Week.

Also on Sunday:

Please plan to arrive early with some flowers for our Living Cross. Sandy and Willetta will be in the narthex assembling the cross and needs many bright flowers to adorn it - bring from your garden or the store. If you could please arrive by 9:30-9:40 that would really help them get it read for our Easter procession.

Easter Parking: We do not have the University Club lot on Easter Sunday. Please plan to park in our Walnut or Los Robles lots or the Fuller "overhang" on Sunday morning.

If you purchased an Easter lily or tulip you may take it home after the service. We will serve Communion on Easter Sunday and all are welcome at our table. We will also have our Good Samaritan envelope and our Easter Offering envelope in our bulletin. Good Sam money is used for outreach and our Easter Offering is used for the ministry of our church. You are also invited to bring non-perishable food items to be taken up the Friends in Deed food pantry.

Church School children are urged to bring all the money they collected in their piggy banks  during Lent this Sunday and hand it to teachers. It would be very helpful if you could count your money and convert it to cash before you come - we hope to gather about $200 and that is a lot of coins to count. NOTE: we do not have church school on Easter. Younger children can go to the nursery after Children's Time; older elementary children can stay with their parents or go to the nursery and play quiet games with the kids. There will be worship bags with some art supplies for those who decide to stay in worship.

Women's Scholarship Tea Invitations are ready!! If you can pick up your invite (and a few others for friends) this Sunday we won't have to send them out and use postage. This is a wonderful event where we will celebrate our scholarship recipients and we hope you plan to attend and bring a friend or two!! All proceeds this year will go directly to the scholarship fund. Kevin Cordova-Brookey is signing up folks to bring their specialty dish for the Tea. See him if you are willing to bring a homemade savory or sweet dish. The date is Saturday May 5th!!

We do NOT have the Los Robles lot for Thursday and do NOT park in the Fuller "overhang" or you will get a ticket.

Good Friday Offering at the Altadena Community Church, UCC.  From 4 p.m. till 8 p.m. there will be an interactive "Stations of the Cross" which involve small onsite projects and opportunities for reflection. The stations can be done at one's own pace and you can drop in at any time and proceed at your own pace. The church is located at 943 E. Altadena Dr.

Easter Worship will be held   10:00 a.m.on April 1st  in our sanctuary, with our choir, beautiful music, communion and a message of hope! Contact Nina ASAP if you want to order a flower.

First Congregational Church of Pasadena Area Women's Scholarship is available annually in the amount of $1000 or more for persons who identify as female who are currently enrolled or planning to enroll by Fall, 2018 at a college or trade/technical school. Our Church's Core Values are: Nurturing Spirituality, Welcome and Social Justice. Our Vision Statement expands upon that to embody God's love for all by celebrating diversity in: racial, age, gender, sexual orientation and physical ability. We also work to serve the marginalized and educationally under served in the greater Pasadena area. These values and vision will guide our selection process. To enter the scholarship, please follow the link below, applications are to be completed and returned to FCC no later than April 8, 2018 by mail, hand-delivery or email.

Lenten Small Group Wrap-Up

Many thanks to those who hosted Lenten Small Groups in their homes: Sue Miele, Brian and Kevin Cordova-Brookey, and Joey and Heather Bland. A good number of folks attended and discussed their lives and learned some things about St. Francis and his ideas about the Church during our meetings. Our discussion leaders: Randy VanDeventer, Rev. Stacy Thomas and Pastors Marlene and Jake all listened and learned new things about how we can be people of faith and the church of Jesus Christ in our time. We will have more small groups this Spring/Summer. If you have a book idea or theme or would like to be a host home please let our pastors know. Small groups are important ways for us to stay connected with each other especially as we travel through a year of change and transformation as a church community.

Palm Sunday Picnic/Egg Hunt

Many thanks for all the behind-the-scenes work that was done so that our community could have a great day in the park on Sunday!! Teachers (Neva, Krysty, Grace) and Membership (Tara, Kevin, Lu and Kim) planned a wonderful day for us. The children participated in an egg hunt and found money in their eggs this year - all to be donated to a non-profit of their choosing. Congrats Finley for having the most money (hmmm, she also won the King Cake at the beginning of Lent!). Thank you Lu for having goody bags for the kids. We are blessed to have so many adults who are willing to host events such as this for our pleasure. Grace Rinck had an adult craft table so that adults could help stuff the invitations for our Women's Scholarship Tea. Thanks Kevin and Neva for providing a bunch of our food; Krysty for providing all drinks; and thanks to the weather for being sunny and relatively warm!

One Kit Saves Two Lives - Saturday, APRIL 7th,
9 - 2 p.m. at Salem Lutheran Church, 1211 N. Brand Blvd., Glendale.

It's an incredible human tragedy.
aid africa Over a million African babies are estimated to die in the first 4 weeks of life - up to half on the first day. Many babies are not named until six weeks of life so the mourning of mothers and families is often hidden. And 1 in 13 mothers die of causes related to pregnancy and childbirth.

Imagine that - you can SAVE TWO LIVES! But to pull it off, we'll need volunteers to assemble kits and lots of generous sponsors to help cover the cost. Will you join us in purchasing and/or assembling kits?
A Sponsor kit is just $10 including shipping,

Hollywood Bowl Outing for Summer 2018

Yes, it's that time to purchase our tickets to the Bowl. Membership Ministry (Kevin, Tara, Lu, Kim and Marlene) have chosen Jennifer Hudson on Saturday July 7th as an event for us to attend together. We have 15 tickets - sign up quickly and we can always purchase a few more (in past years we were allowed to return unused tickets but this year we have to buy in advance). We have great seats in P1 for $36 each. There is some scholarship money to supplement those for whom the price is too high, so please speak with Pastor Marlene for a reduced price ticket. The time is 8 p.m. and of course we will go ahead of time and picnic. Join us!!
