Reflections on Worship . . .              

 1 Peter 4:12-14; 5:6-11 & Acts 1: 6-11 Sermon theme: How long?!? (Oh, and is suffering useful?)

The daily onslaught of news can be mind numbing and soul-rattling: everything from the daily news coming out of the White House and the media who covers it to a proposed national budget to the bombing in Manchester and a host of other situations abroad. A natural question arises: how long might things worsen-- and will things get better? This Sunday we will spend time with two texts for "Ascension   Sunday," the week when we read about the departure of the resurrected Jesus and what's left behind... for the transformation of the world.

Following worship and coffee hour the Church Council will meet in the east parlor to go over the monthly financials. 
Spring Business Meeting Notification 
  All active members are invited to join us for our Spring Business Meeting on Sunday June 4th at 11:15AM in the Parlors. We will hear reports from our Treasurer, Investment Committee, Moderator and Pastors and vote on a slate of volunteers for our Officers and Ministry Members for the coming year. Please bring a dish to share and drop food off in the kitchen before worship so we can place the food on tables for the meeting.  
Canned goods for Friends in Deed:
You are invited to bring in non-perishable food items any Sunday to be delivered to the FID food pantry. We typically put the basket out on Communion Sundays which are the first Sunday of the month, but you may bring your food items any Sunday. Thanks in advance for helping us help others! 
Looking Ahead: 
 Pentecost and Choir Appreciation will be held on Sunday June 4th. The Choir will be honored at a dinner at the Pomeroys the evening of June 4th as well.

On June 18th we will celebrate all high school, college and graduate school graduates!! We know of Lachlan, Moriah, Andy S., James and Mary C. If there are others to be celebrated, let Pastor Marlene or Lu Burd know! And plan to come and celebrate them with us.

Women's Scholarship Tea

Three wonderful women were awarded $1000 scholarships at our 2nd Annual Women's Scholarship Tea this past weekend! Congratulations to Annie Liu (second year recipient), Rubi Lopez and Rhema Taylor who were honored at our Tea last Saturday. Annie is finishing up her final year at PCC in the Dental Hygiene Program. Rubi is attending Cal State L.A. and working on her teaching credential to be a Special Education teacher. Rhema will be a first year student at Xavier U. of Louisiana. Many thanks to Grace Rinck who is the Chair of this wonderful scholarship and the visionary for this event. We also want to thank all who brought food and helped make the event wonderful - Roberta White, Neva Orr, and many many others!! We also received several new donations to the Scholarship Fund to help replenish it and build it. And a special thanks to the Scholarship Selection Committee who read applications and selected our winners this year: Grace Rinck, Krysty Leckrone, Mary Camacho, Marlene Pomeroy and Bettie Teel.

Irene's Celebration

It was a grand event to celebrate and honor Ms. Irene Phillips this past Sunday in worship and afterwards at a luncheon in her honor. Ms. Irene has been our Nursery Director for over 50 years and several generations of families had babies in her nursery during that time. A large crowd of family and friends were here to honor her as the children presented her with five dozen roses representing the many children she loved and cared for over five decades. We also had a slide presentation of photographs of Irene and children over the years. Many folks stayed for the luncheon and took turns hugging and honoring her. It was a festive day for a woman who has given so much to our church! Many thanks to the committee who organized the event: John Gamber-Thompson, Lu Burd and Pastor Marlene and the many people who brought food and contributed to the love offering!

Birthing Kit Assembly  
Aid Africa is having its annual Birthing Kit Assembly day on June 3rd this year and the location is in Glendale! Remember that getting sponsors is of utmost importance. Irene can give you a card to honor your Mother's. It is a wonderful Mother's Day gift to save a Mom and her newborn infant. Please support this effort with your money and your time.

March Home

I hope this finds you well! I wanted to personally reach out to invite you and your Adopt a Meal group members to Union Station's upcoming event, March Home, happening  Saturday, June 10th from 8am-12pm in front of Pasadena's City Hall.
March Home is a mission-driven walk to end homelessness, and participants will be able to walk from City Hall to all three of our permanent supportive housing locations. The event will culminate with a finish line festival featuring live music, food trucks, and other fun activities. We'll also be featuring speeches from former clients, staff, and city officials.
For more than 40 years, Union Station Homeless Services has been fighting for the rights and needs of individuals experiencing homelessness in Pasadena. This event will help us to continue bringing awareness to this important cause, and we would love to see you there!

PCC Chamber Singers June 10 8pm Sexon Auditorium, PCC

PCC Chamber Singers, Concert Choir, and Orchestra will be joined by the Don Brinegar Singers to present Carl Orff's Carmina Burana. Tickets are usually $5-10 for Students and Seniors, $15-20 general admission.
Summer Hollywood Bowl Outing Scheduled!

Membership Ministry has selected the date of Sunday Aug. 27th for our Summer Outing to hear Pink Martini. They are an eclectic group of performers and musicians and are not to be missed! The concert begins at 7:00 p.m. and our discounted group tickets at $25 each. See Lu Burd or Pastor Marlene to sign up and pre-pay for your tickets. We have about six tickets left in section L-1 and will plan to picnic together before the event. You must include $25 with your reservations. Any unused tickets will be released July 10th so get your tickets soon!
