We welcome our newest Golden Knights from the Class of 2020 into the St. Francis family!
Newly Renovated, Technology Enhanced Learning Center is Open for Business
Renovation of the Learning Center is finished and construction of the Chapel portico is complete! The upgraded facilities are wonderful! Most importantly, the structural improvements and technology enhancements will facilitate our students' learning and spiritual growth. Additionally, the school is purchasing data base subscriptions that will support 21st century learning at St. Francis. Our students will have access to primary and secondary resources, educational journals, and age-appropriate reference sources for nearly every course offered at St. Francis. This access will be available to them regardless of where they are and prepare them for the type of research expected in higher education. GO KNIGHTS!

St. Francis High School Welcomes New Head Baseball Coach
We are pleased to announce that Mr. Aaron Dorlarque has been named as St. Francis High School's new head baseball coach. In addition, Mr. Dorlarque will be joining the school's faculty as a full time Mathematics instructor. He holds a Master's Degree in Educational Leadership from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and earned his Bachelor's Degree in Quantitative Economics from Stanford University.

Mr. Dorlarque was the head b aseball coach at the Dunn School in Los Olivos from 2002-2015 before relocating to Southern California with his family. During his tenure at the Dunn School, his teams won six league championships and regularly advanced to the CIF Playoffs. Several of his former players went on to play at the college level. In addition to his coaching and teaching duties at Dunn, he was also the school's Director of Development and served as the Associate Head of School.

He pitched four years for the Stanford Cardinal, leading his team in saves in 1992, and wins in 1993. He also pitched in two summer collegiate programs in Alaska for the Anchorage Bucs and in Cape Cod for the Wareham Gatemen. Following his collegiate career, he was drafted by the Kansas City Royals and advanced as high as triple A before concluding his professional career with the Montreal Expos.

"We are thrilled to have someone of Aaron's background," said St. Francis' Athletic Director Matt Luderer. "His character and integrity, along with his baseball experience, were exactly what we were seeking in a leader for our baseball program."

St. Francis High School welcomes Coach Dorlarque and his family into the St. Francis community and is excited about the tremendous impact that he is going to have on the students, the baseball program, and the school. GO KNIGHTS!

Prayers for Fr. Gregory Coiro, OFM Cap.
Our Capuchin brother Fr. Gregory Coiro has come to the difficult decision to stop his dialysis treatments. He is at California Pacific Medical Center in San Francisco in palliative care. Normally once people stop dialysis they only live for less than two weeks. Fr. Gregory requests your prayers as he prepares himself to go to Our Heavenly Father. Please keep him and his dear mother and family in your prayers as they face this very difficu lt time. Please join us in praying for our Capuchin brother Fr. Gregory:

PRAYER FOR FR. GREGORY

Dear Merciful God, with heavy hearts we come to You. You are Almighty Creator God; holy and full of grace and love. Our hearts are heavy because of a life that is leaving us. Death engulfs us Lord. Fear is waiting to take us down. Thank You Father, that because of Jesus, You know our pain and sorrow intimately. Thank You that Jesus knows the way through this dark shadow. Take the hand of Gregory and make Yourself known. Guard his heart and mind. Keep Gregory, who is your own and take him into eternity to be with You. You are the gate keeper to eternal life. Your grace and love abound. Take Gregory's hand Lord and lead him through. We lay our fears at your feet. Your promise is that You -- and You alone -- will come to take us home. As it says in Psalm 23:4: "Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me."

Thank you for the comfort we find in Your presence. Through the Holy Spirit we know Your presence is with us. Send us Your peace Lord; the peace that passes all understanding. Don't let Gregory waiver and doubt. Give him a faith that is everlasting. We surrender Gregory's life into Your hands. As we wait and watch, we know Lord that none of us will escape this journey through death. Teach us how to embrace it with faith. Give us strength to hold up Gregory who is stepping closer to seeing You face to face. Take away the fear in the heart of our loved one who will soon see You; let him find peace in Your grace, comfort in Your love, and strength in Your mighty power over death. Comfort us as our grief seems to overpower us.

Don't let us grow bitter in this shadow of death. But pierce our hearts with a joy that we cannot fathom or understand. A joy that is infinite and everlasting. Jesus you wept over death and so too, we weep. But it is a grief and a mourning that holds joy on the other side. You are conqueror of all; and so we trust You. May we know Your presence, Lord. Keep us ever aware of Your loving hand guiding us through all things. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.

1st Quarter Franciscan Virtue: Acceptance
Coming Home - A Reflection on Acceptance (Acceptance Information Packet
A story is told about a soldier who was finally coming home after having fought in Vietnam. He called his parents from San Francisco.

"Mom and Dad, I'm coming home, but I've a favor to ask. I have a friend I'd like to bring home with me."

"Sure," they replied. "We'd love to meet him."

"There's something you should know," the son continued. "He was hurt pretty badly in the fighting. He stepped on a land mine and lost an arm and a leg. He has nowhere else to go, and I want him to come live with us."

"I'm sorry to hear that, son. Maybe we can help him find somewhere to live."

"No, Mom and Dad, I want him to live with us."

"Son," said the father, "you don't know what you're asking. Someone with such a handicap would be a terrible burden to us. We have our own lives to live, and we can't let something like this interfere with our lives. I think you should just come on home and forget about this guy. He'll find a way to live on his own."

At that point, the son hung up the phone. The parents heard nothing more from him. A few days later, however, they received a call from the San Francisco police. Their son died after falling from a building, they were told. The police believed it was suicide.

The grief-stricken parents flew to San Francisco and were taken to the city morgue to identify the body of their son. They recognized him, but to their horror they also discovered something they didn't know-their son had only one arm and one leg.

The parents in this story are not unlike many of us. We find it easy to love those who are good-looking or fun to have around, but we don't like people who inconvenience us or make us feel uncomfortable. We would rather stay away from people who aren't as healthy, beautiful, or smart as we are.

Thankfully, God doesn't treat us that way. God loves us with an unconditional love that welcomes us into his forever family, regardless of how messed up we are.

Because of his great love for us, we are to reach out to others in the same way.

Alum's Outreach Continues to Motivate and Inspire

Thank you, Steph, for setting the example of a true Golden Knight by serving through your actions! GO KNIGHTS!

"There are 2 days you do not need to worry about - yesterday and tomorrow. You cannot change the past or predict the future. Make the most of today, do you very best in the blessing of today's 24 hours." - Stephan Taylor '00

"The "Dream Team" came to talk to our students at the Kearny Mesa Juvenile Detention Facility today to share their personal stories of overcoming adversity. I was watching the boys and you could tell they were all listening. Hopefully when they get out they will remember what these men told them and make positive choices. Thank you to Tommy Sablan, Gary Fenelli, Ken E Nwadike Jr, Stephan Taylor and Gary Plummer for making the time to talk to our students and to show them what they are capable of accomplishing." - Cheryl Ames

"Juvenile Detention Centers aren't filled with bad kids. Most of them are young men and women that need guidance from role models to help them make better decisions. As we spoke to them today, it was amazing to see how responsive they were. They just need more professionals to help lead the way and show them they care." - Ken E. Nwadike Jr.

State and Local Fires Draw Firefighting Resources Tight
By Megan Rupe
St. Francis High School is grateful to all of our amazing firefighters, especially grads like Kenny Garcia '00, who have been extremely busy  this summer battling fires in the midst of soaring temperatures in order to keep our local communities safe. Thank you all for your service and selflessness! GO KNIGHTS!

Kenny Garcia is a firefighter here on engine five.

This is his second day on the clock, he's been doing that job in the heat.

"We just keep going, and going and going and getting in our gear constantly," Garcia said.

Some of that gear has multiple layers.

"We got our inner liner here, this is a moisture barrier."

Garcia's not the only one feeling the heat.

The Fresno Fire Department's sent seven rigs to a five-alarm fire in Sanger Sunday and resources to the Sand Fire, burning down south...(read the full article and watch the news report HERE

The Top 25 American Film Schools
By The Hollywood Reporter Staff
St. Francis is proud of the numerous Golden Knights who have attended or are attending many of the most competitive film schools across the nation! For the past 26 years, the St. Francis Arts Film and Television Program has consistently produced young men with tremendous ability who have gone on to successful careers in film and television. Keep up the great work, gentlemen! GO KNIGHTS!

Learning to become a filmmaker used to be much simpler: All you needed was a 16mm camera, a few scraps of film stock and an inspirational teacher. But these days, film schools are considered useless unless they offer state-of-the-art augmented reality labs, high-end digital Steadicams and at least one course taught by James Franco - all of which makes applying to these institutions more confusing than ever before.

To help, THR presents its sixth annual ranking of the 25 best U.S. film schools (and a list of 15 of the best foreign film schools). As always, the magazine assembled the list by consulting with academic experts, industry professionals and scores of film school alumni...(read the full article HERE)

Top 10 Individual Performances in a Team Setting: Davitt sacks Burroughs in quarterfinals
By Andrew J. Campa, Glendale News-Press
The following is the #1 of the top-10 individual performances in a team setting for the 2015-16 high school season as voted by the Glendale News-Press sports staff.

1 Sean Davitt versus Burroughs in the CIF  Southern Section Southeast Division quarterfinals:
Sean Davitt wreaked havoc and took over the CIF Southern Section Southeast Division quarterfinal, tallying 12 tackles, six sacks and leading St. Francis to a 21-7 win over fourth-seeded Burroughs.

"It feels amazing, because I think there were greater expectations last year and this year, we didn't know how far we could go," said Davitt, who also caught the game-winning 16-yard touchdown pass late in the third quarter and racked up negative 36 yards on his half-dozen sacks. "It's a great feeling."

Davitt's touchdown came on a drive that put St. Francis ahead, 14-0, after three quarters. The pass was of the play-action variety from quarterback Miles Bryant.

Though Pacific League champion Burroughs answered with a one-yard touchdown run from Ash Hawkins to pull within 14-7 with 6:54 left in the contest, St. Francis countered with another touchdown to win the contest, 21-7.

Davitt, the All-Area Football Player of the Year who had 23 sacks on the season, led the Golden Knights' defense to a performance in which it held Burroughs to a season-low in points and just 154 yards of offense...(read the full article HERE

Top 10 Individual Performances in an Individual Setting
By Andrew J. Campa, Glendale News-Press
The top 10 individual performances in an individual setting from the 2015-16 season were voted on by the sportswriters of the Glendale News-Press.

3 Jasher Foster at CIF Southern Section Division III Track and Field Finals: Before 2015, the St. Francis track and field program owned three division titles dating back to 1958.

In just the last two years, Foster has claimed three titles, including two at the CIF Southern Section Division III Finals at Cerritos College on May 21.

Perhaps the one that meant most came in his last race, the Division III 300-meter hurdles.

In that competition, Foster picked up some Mission League revenge by holding off Sherman Oaks Notre Dame's Austin Lietz with a winning mark of 37.26 seconds, a personal record that blasted his preliminaries time of 39.46. Litez had defeated Foster at the Mission League Finals in the 300.

"All glory to God," said Foster, whose two wins gave St. Francis 20 points and tied the Golden Knights for seventh in Division III with San Luis Obispo. "I got out great, changed my steps to 22 and just felt comfortable, hit my marks in this middle section of the race and just finished strong. I'm real thankful right now."

It was a repeat effort for Foster earlier in the 110-meter hurdles, as he won in a wind-aided time of 14.03, which was also a personal-best mark, to repeat as the 110 champion after winning in 2015.

Both efforts easily qualified Foster to the Masters Meet back at Cerritos as the Golden Knight's marks were the third-best among all four divisions in both events...(read the full article HERE
