God... On The Money
Our currency in the United States includes a healthy theological reminder printed on it. On April 22, 1864 Congress passed legislation allowing the U.S. Mint to inscribe "In God We Trust" on the two-cent coin. From there, legislation moved through Congress allowing the Department of the Treasury to place the motto on other denominations of currency and coinage. While I'm always leery when the government gets involved in anything religious, in this case it is somewhat benign and perhaps even beneficial. Money itself communicates that we should not trust it!  What an appropriate message for our day and age.

When we think of trusting God, we often think of doing so in times of trouble. When we are "out of control" we are fond of thinking that God somehow is still in control. What if we could learn to trust God not just in times of crisis? What if we could trust God with everything in our lives?

Relationships. Intimacy. Death. Provision. What if our money is right and that only in God can we find something... someone worthy of our trust. For my money, God is the only one who deserves my complete and unconditional trust. I just need to listen to my money's motto more often! Perhaps I need to be reminded every time I touch my wallet or pocket full of coins. How about you?

aidsAUGUST 18 | AIDS SUNDAY
AIDS Ribbon
Message from Brenda Blake, Director of Church and Community Work
This Sunday we'll take a special offering in all services to support our AIDS Ministry. First Church has a long tradition of ministry with people living with HIV/AIDS, a ministry of support, compassion, and advocacy.  Ministry with people living with HIV/AIDS gives us a way to share Christ's love in a concrete way.  Since AIDS was identified over 30 years ago, the face and story of the disease has changed dramatically; People with HIV are now living longer, better lives, but there still is no cure.  AIDS remains a disease that too often carries judgment and stigmatization. Sunday August 25 - We'll wish Randy a fond farewell in Linder Hall, 11 AM.
After 20 years as Youth Director Randal Newton is leaving First Church to pursue his education. Join us in a great celebration of Randy's ministry and to wish him the best in his new endeavor.

"Randy's deep love and dedication to our young people will be deeply missed.  As a church, we should celebrate his commitment to God by serving our teens.", said Lead Pastor Craig Brown. Over these years, Randy has made a significant contribution to the lives of countless teens during a critical season in each of their lives. As a church, this commitment is something to be celebrated as Randy begins a new season of ministry in his life.

The Pastoral Team along with the Staff-Parish Relations Committee will begin a search for Randall's successor during the month of August. Charlotte Wilson will serve as the Interim Director of Youth Ministries until a new Director is hired. Please continue to be in prayer for Randy, the youth of First Church and the team receiving applications for Randy's successor.

Relay: Running Together in Faith
Sunday School begins September 1
Whether you've been away for the whole summer or away for a while, we'd love to continue learning the Bible stories with your family! Like a relay race, we are different people with different gifts... and we can all help the children of our church and community grow in faith and in love of God. We are running in faith together!

Our starting line will be studying the Old Testament, covering the stories of many Judges, Kings, Prophets, and other people of God. It is our goal that through study, prayer, worship, and play, families will come to know, treasure, and be shaped by these stories!

The worship practices set in motion in the 16th century had a tremendous impact on the Wesley brothers and the beginning of Methodism in the 18th century, and continue to impact worship in the 21st century. Many of the hymns (or chorales as they were originally named) will be familiar to you.
