Rev. Mary Allman-Boyle

Dear friends,
Mary Magdalene was an unlikely leader. Many of our Biblical characters are. Possessed by seven demons, she was a social outcast. But when Jesus healed her, he did something else. He included her in the community and she became a devote follower. How many disciples can you think of that are named 12 times in the gospels? Mary is named time after time at various important moments in the life, ministry, death, and yes resurrection of Jesus. To be fair, she is the first to see the risen Lord.

This week I hope you have been engaged in the Daily Devotional Guide and thought about a time you were healed and how you felt. Did it make you a committed disciple overcoming obstacles and prejudices? Did you feel radically included among other disciples?  Did you commit to spend time with the Lord?  I sometimes hear people say that they don't venture into church because the people in church have it all together. I guess they don't realize that we are all outcasts until Jesus comes into our hearts and welcomes us into the Kingdom of God.

Being a disciple is about being present to Jesus. That begins with showing up. I ask you to come this Sunday prepared to be present to the Lord. And by being present, really present, be prepared to be sent forth as an apostle.

Blessings,
Mary

The Mission of Spiritual Growth

Wesley Foundation serving San Diego State University

"I will want to be part of the Wesley Foundation. If I didn't have enough money to go to college, I'd like to live in a place like this." Wesley Foundation Ministries serving San Diego State University offers experiences of living in God's grace.

A mission team of 60 teenagers and adults from First United Methodist Church in Duncanville, Texas, found out about the mission outreach of Wesley Foundation at SDSU, providing pastoral care, focus-events, and practical learning experiences. They learned that we provide hospitality and advocate for those in need by providing affordable housing for students. These United Methodists from Texas heard about how the Cal-Pac Conference needs local support to pay for the campus minister's salary starting in large increments this year.

The work of their hands and money they contributed painted our 8000 sq. ft. apartment building and replaced 50-year-old fences. As one 14-year old said, "I will want to be part of the Wesley Foundation. If I didn't have enough money to go to college, I'd like to live in a place like this."  Wesley Foundation Ministries develops leaders who put faith into action.

Thank You from 160 VBS-kids and Pastor Jessica!

VBS Fun Fair

Dear Church Family,
Thank you so much to all of those who donated supplies to help make VBS 2013 a success! From craft supplies, food, decorations, and items from the various countries we explored, your generosity helped us provide an even better VBS experience. Due to your efforts, 160 children had a fun and meaningful time at VBS due to your efforts. Thank you so much for your ministry!

Thank you also to the 40+ volunteers who gave of their time and abilities, to the pastoral and office staff for all of their support, and to Kayleigh Neel, our VBS intern. They came early, they stayed late, and they helped children learn about being good neighbors. We learned that our neighbors are all over the world, and that loving God with our whole heart, being, strength, and mind also means loving our neighbors as we love ourselves.  Without each one of you, this important ministry could not happen. Our church and our community are so grateful.

Blessings,
Pastor Jessica
