Aspiring Community Organizers
|
Summer is almost here! At the Midwest Academy, like so many of your organizations, that means one thing: the interns are coming!
As we prepare for intern season and talk to students and new graduates, we hear from those who are considering joining the ranks of Community Organizers. Of course, we think they should. That's why we're doing what we can to provide training opportunities for those interested in Community Organizing careers. Bring on the students and the summer! |

Training for Recent Graduates
|
|
This year, we are expanding the training portion of our internship program in order to help recent graduates prepare for careers in Community Organizing. We hear from students everyday who think they may want to join the field but are unsure of where to start. In order to help aspiring Organizers get out there, we're expanding our summer student training to include:
- A few selective spots in the 5-day Organizing for Social Change training for recent graduates
- Job search advice and assistance
- Resume workshops
- Panels discussions with interns from previous years who now work in the field
- A career fair with non-profit organizations from the Chicagoland area
Admission to the 5-day training is highly selective and spots will likely fill up quickly, so we encourage interested students to apply as soon as possible. The application process is open to:
- Recent college graduates
- Those who have not yet worked as Organizers, but are considering a career in Community Organizing
- Graduates who have not yet been hired by an organization
The training takes place June 4th - 8th in Chicago.
Interested? Apply here! The application deadline is May 25th, but spots are limited, so submit your application as soon as possible.

Midwest Academy Summer Interns
|
In addition to our training for recent graduates, we will also be training the Midwest Academy Intern Class of 2012 in June. We are excited to have placed 10 interns in our summer programs. Students will attend the Academy's 5-Day Organizing for Social Change Training in June and will then be placed with community organizations throughout the Chicagoland area.
They will work with organizations through the summer to recruit members and plan an action. We'll have more news and details and they get started, so stay tuned. Many of our past graduates have gone on to exciting organizing gigs with some great Illinois and Chicago-based organizations, including:
- Citizen Action Illinois
- Chicago Coalition for the Homeless
- Organization of the North East
Last summer's group of Midwest Academy Interns! Stay tuned for details from this year's class.

Upcoming Trainings
|
Are you in the early planning stages of a new issue campaign? Does your current campaign need to refocus? Come to the Advanced Organizing for Social Change session and spend three days with the Academy's most experienced trainers applying the strategy chart to your organization's campaign.
July 11 - 13th | Berkley, CA This three-day session gives Supervisors of Organizers time to step back from meetings on the run, in order to evaluate themselves as supervisors and develop a plan that meets the needs of their organization and the organizers that they supervise. The workshop develops supervisors' skills in staff development, giving them the tools to challenge and develop their staff.
Organizing for Social Change Training
