Mevorchim Sh'vat
January 12-13, 2018
Shalom and hello everyone! I hope you are doing well.

This shabbos is mevorchim chodesh shevat, a month rich in Jewish meaning and symbolism.

We famously celebrate tu b’shevat (the fifteenth day of shevat) which is the New Years for trees and there is an opinion (in the mishna) that this is observed on the first day of Shevat!

Come to shul and hear the special tefilos l’kavod rosh chodesh as we usher in a period of blossoming and renewal for the Jewish People.

Please join me in welcoming this shabbos morning our special guest darshan/speaker on the subject of BDS and Israel.

Hear from TZAHAL reservist Amit Dery , Executive Director, Reservists on Duty , whose organization is determined to counter the insidious BDS (Boycott, Divest, Sanction) movement which seeks to delegitimize Israel and financially disrupt her economy. Don’t miss this important address!

Look to your email for OS upcoming exciting events, including: Friday night dinner and oneg in my home for young men and boys bar mitzvah age and up, a Tu B’shvat seder and tisch , and a newly designed Purim party extravaganza!

Also in the works is our famous annual Cholent Cook Off , a new Ohav Sholom Sunday Ski Trip with a professional ski instructor, and a Motzei Shabbos Bowling and Pizza Party. We’ll see you there!

Did you know the six weeks that starting with parshas shemos initiates a period called Shovavim , or wayward?

The word Shovavim alludes to the Posuk in Yirmiya (3:14), "Shuvu Banim Shovavim !” "Return O wayward children!”

The Rabbis have instructed us that this period is considered auspicious for fasting and the rectification of sins of character weakness (most notably sexual sins).

To that end, and at the request of the worldwide Shovavim organization - dedicated to disseminating the Laws of Family Purity to the Jewish People, I deliver each thursday morning throughout the month of January a shiur on Hilchos Niddah at the West Side Kollel , located at 646 West End Avenue, starting at 9:00am

If you are married (or marriage minded) please join our growing chaburah!

(Note: I deliver a daily shiur in hilchos ribbis, the laws of charging interest, at the West Side Kollel, Sunday - Thursday, 9:30am - 11:30am. All are invited!)

Have a wonderful shabbos!

See you in shul for mevorchim,

Rabbi Aaron D. Mehlman
