It's Wildfire Season in Contra Costa County!

As summer continues to heat up so does the potential for wildfire, especially during the July 4 th holiday. As a homeowner your activities can help prevent wildfire from damaging your home. Your best insurance is to create defensible space. Defensible space is the area you create around your home that can slow or stop the spread wildfire. It can reduce the chance of your home catching on fire either from direct contact or radiant heat. It also allows space for firefighters to defend your home. Create defensible space by:

1.  Clearing dry weeds, dead and dying plants or trees means less fuel for a wildfire.

2.  Pruning trees to remove lower branches prevents a wildfire from climbing into the       crowns and spreading fire to your roof.

3.  Mowing dry grass areas, especially near roads or driveways reduces the chances of ignitions.

4.  Removing combustible materials, leaves and pine needles from roofs and gutters can reduce the spread of wildfire.

5. Inform community members that the best way to protect their families is to not use fireworks at all. Please attend public fireworks displays, and leave the lighti ng to the professionals.
