Dear Sisters and Brothers,

I am writing to announce that we are implementing an innovative new approach to managing diocesan communications.

We have traditionally expected one individual to possess all the varied kinds of expertise that make up organizational communication. That's a lot to expect, and after Ben Sibielski resigned as director of communications, we identified a new approach that engages multiple individuals and firms on a part-time basis, making the most of their specific gifts and experiences. I will lead a team consisting of the following:

The Rev. Gillian Barr will serve part-time as digital communications coordinator, managing our website, social media and e-newsletters, and will work with volunteers and subcontractors for videography and photography. Gillian has availability to take on this role because the Jonathan Daniels House program, of which she was the Director, has regrettably been suspended, due to a lack of agencies able to fund interns and a national shortage of interns. Gillian will continue in her role as priest-in-charge at the Church of the Good Shepherd in Pawtucket.

Dave Seifert, principal of Seifert Communications, will serve as strategic communications consultant, managing internal communication strategy and implementation, including an initiative to re-imagine how we use print. I've also asked Dave to bring together a group of laypeople from throughout the diocese who have expertise in specific communications disciplines and who could increase our capacity and capabilities.

Canticle Communications will manage our external media relations and crisis communications needs. Canticle is a highly respected strategic communications agency that focuses on working with faith communities and is led by two Episcopalians.

The Technology Advisory Group will manage computer security and troubleshoot technology issues that occur as needed.

We have begun to implement these changes, which will not increase costs from the previous structure of one full-time staff member, and will continue using this approach through year-end, when we will assess whether any adjustments are needed for 2017. I see great promise in this hybrid model, which allows us to access the capabilities of several individuals and firms. I ask for your prayers and your support as we embark on this new approach to a critical and important diocesan ministry.
