iLEAD NoHo Juniors Take NYC by Storm
Our juniors Olivia Dutcher, Julienne Green and Meital Zeigel traveled to New York City last week, and represented iLEAD Noho'ers' theater learners by performing at famed Feinstein's/54 Below in Manhattan in front of some of Broadway's most-loved stars!

While in town, they took in nightly Broadway performances of their favorite shows, and spent a day touring Barnard College, Columbia University, Marymount Manhattan College, and NYU with Anne Cochran. Here are some photos from Meital, Julienne, and Olivia's excellent adventure...and congratulations to them!

Future Fest is the foundation of New American Musicals' annual event showcasing the most talented young high school and college performers singing songs from new American musicals.

Following successful productions of Future Fest in L.A. for the last three years, the event played in New York for the first time last week at Feinstein's/54 Below.

iLEAD NoHo Slam Team to Compete at Get Lit April 21
Announcing the spring 2017 iLEAD NoHo Slam Team! Come see them compete at the Get Lit Classic Slam on Friday, April 21!

Note from coaches, Ms. Salas and Mr. Hall --

Earlier this month, iLEAD NoHo hosted its very first qualifying slam for the iLEAD NoHo Slam Team!  It was a stellar night of loud voices and supportive community building. We would like to thank our generous host, Mila Cuda, our riveting sacrificial poet of the night, David Mayzenberg, and our enthusiastic judges: Ms. Dondero, Ms. Wilbert, Ms. Teichmann, Mrs. Hall, Mr. Seldes, community poet Mr. Pete Holby and student Helen Drizhal, for their help!

Many brave and talented voices took the stage  to compete for the team's six open spots. It was a very difficult decision to make...but the members of the 2017 Slam Team are: Mila Cuda, Mackenzie Forman, Lakota Harvey, Faith Mayhew, Jassmena Petrosian, Dominic Rascon-Powell with Grace Holtzclaw and Ollie Bruce as our alternates!

We are immensely proud of all of the poets who participated, as well as the hard work they have put in over the past few weeks to prepare. Congratulations to everyone for their power-packed performances!

All team members are practicing (every single day after school!) to prepare to move on to the Get Lit Classic Slam on April 21-23. As everyone knows, our team is the first-place winner of this huge and very-high-profile event for the last two years. Can we do it again? The pressure is on!

NoHo'ers who would like to come watch our team compete are invited  to come with us to quarterfinals at the L.A. Theatre Center in Downtown L.A. on Friday, April 21. Please fill out the following signup form if you are interested:  tinyurl.com/poetryposse2017

PARENTS! We've been experiencing some difficulties securing an affordable bus for our students. Would any iLEAD NoHo parents be available on this day to transport some students and teacher chaperons, so our school can have a cheering posse?  This would consist of an 8 a.m. pickup and 2 p.m. dropoff (back at campus) on Friday, April 21. Parents are more than welcome to stay for the slam. However, it is not required.

Additionally, the team is able to cover any parking/gas fees incurred. We just want to make sure the team can see some of its school family out there in the crowd.  It is also a memorable and empowering experience for the student audience. If you can help us, we would be eternally grateful. Please email Ms. Salas at  [email protected]  ASAP.

Speaking of veteran team member Mila Cuda...watch her deliver this outstanding performance of "A Student Named Art," which she wrote last year in collaboration with NoHo Class of '16 grad Caitlyn Bove (now a freshman at Antioch College) and USC film student Miriam Sachs:  https://vimeo.com/208356956

This film, as you'll notice from reading the credits, was made by Get Lit and adopted by LAUSD to promote its arts-in-education awareness and action.
Edgar Tombokon Gets Full Ride to Oberlin College
iLEAD NoHo senior Edgar Tombokon was just informed that he will receive a full-ride scholarship to prestigious Oberlin College! Eddy, who is very active in NoHo speech/debate and poetry activities, is a great student who has overcome myriad life challenges with tremendous grace and success -- ones that most people couldn't even begin to effectively mitigate.

T he Oberlin admission team read Eddy's application, and informed Anne Cochran that it was one of the most compelling applications they received this season, and commented on the effectiveness of his recommendation letters from NoHo staff as well as the high quality of Eddy's writing as demonstrated in his essays. Accordingly, the Oberlin admission team will award Eddy one of its two four-year, full-ride scholarships to attend college there in the fall.

Other colleges where  Eddy has been accepted include NYU, Sarah Lawrence, Case Western Reserve, and several others.

Congratulations , Eddy! All of us are extremely proud of you and happy to know you're being recognized and well supported, because you deserve it.
Jonathan Cseh - Full Ride at University of Rochester!
NoHo 12th-grader Jonathan Cseh just learned he has received a full-ride scholarship to attend University of Rochester in New York!

Jonathan is an A student who intends to study psychology and engage in related undergraduate research. Some of the long list of additional colleges that admitted Jonathan include Whitman, UC Santa Barbara, Case Western Reserve, Brandeis and Clark.

Congratulations, Jonathan -- we're proud of you and your great work ethic and positive attitude!
That Moment When You Find Out...
And here are a few shots of NoHo seniors learning about their admission to their top-choice colleges:

SBAC ASSEMBLY FOR JUNIORS APRIL 28 in the STUDIO
Attention juniors! On Tuesday, April 28, we'll hold a junior-class assembly in the Studio during HQ to go over what to expect during SBAC state testing on April 3 and 4 (for which attendance is mandatory - see below).  Mr. Horne and some of the ELA and math facilitators will go over the parts of the test, what you need to do to prepare, and test-anxiety-management strategies. Report to your HQ first, and then to the Studio. See you then!
SBAC Testing Is Coming!
New state standards are challenging students to understand subject matter more deeply, think more critically, and apply their learning to the real world. To measure these new standards, educators from Smarter Balanced States worked together to develop new, high-quality assessments in English and math for grades 3-8 and high school. These Smarter Balanced assessments provide more accurate and meaningful information about what students are learning by adapting to each student's ability, giving teachers and parents better information to help students succeed in school and after.

Here at NoHo, all juniors will take SBAC assessments in ELA and math on Monday, April 3, and Tuesday, April 4 from approximately 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

All sophomores will take a new computer-based science content standard assessment on April 25 during first period (the state expects the assessment to take about an hour, so no major modifications to schedules are necessary).

Attendance is mandatory at these times.

While the assessment does not affect any given learner's graduation requirements, how the juniors do as a whole does impact our school report card, and the overall results will be published, which in turn will affect how our program will be viewed within and outside of our community. Accordingly, would you please help us by taking a moment to speak with your junior and/or sophomore about the importance of this assessment and doing one's very best when participating in the assessment session? Garnering best-possible results serves each and every one of us. Thanks!
Speech and Debate Update from Coach Iain Lampert

Another national speech and debate qualifier has come and gone. We started on time AND ended on time -- despite having to go to a SEVENTH round of debate AND speech. It was efficient, transparent, and in good spirits...everything I hoped for and more. Thank you to every judge, competitor, and supporter...especially our terrific district committee ( Bobby Eleanor , Victor, and  Leilani ), hosts (Amber and Christina) and Extemp proctors ( Kate  and  Evan ).

Results for the tournament as a whole are up on the West Los Angeles NSDA Facebook page. Here's where I'll put on my proud coaching cap -- we're sending more competitors to the national championship than we did during our last two years combined.

An iLEAD Family Needs Our Support
Please help iLEAD NoHo's Minster Family!

Sam and Lisa Minster are the parents of iLEAD NoHo 11th-grader Shane and former NoHo student (18-year-old) Lauren; as well as our good friends and neighbors within our ILEAD NoHo community.  On October 4, Lauren suffered a massive and life-threatening stroke and brain bleed. Although she has very recently shown some much-welcomed signs of improvement, it is clear that at best, Lauren will require -- as her physicians report -- "constant physical therapy for the next year." Even though the Minster family does indeed have health insurance, the benefits won't deliver anywhere near enough funds to cover the massive expenses Lauren's recovery will undoubtedly incur.

Accordingly, all of us at iLEAD NoHo are reaching out to all of you -- our entire community of families, employees and friends -- asking if each of you would please make a donation to the GoFundMe account that the Minsters' close friend Gary Dinman set up in order to help defray some of the tremendous costs and accompanying sorrow and stress. Any amount, large or small, would be so helpful.

Thank you in advance for your support and generosity! Here is the link to Lauren's GoFundMe page:
