by Teymi-Elise Herring, MPH, RDN, CDE - D irector of Nutrition and Dietetics

Ever wonder where dietitians hang out?
(L-R) Teymi Herring, Kayla Hall, Dr. Prudence Pollard, Holly Forbes, Dr. Joycelyn Peterson and Leighann Rice pause for a moment during the Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo in Chicago.

Faculty and students from Oakwood University's Nutrition and Dietetics Department met the Vice President of Research and Faculty Development, Dr. Prudence Pollard, at the annual Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE) in Chicago, Illinois, October 22-24, 2017. This annual professional conference is sponsored by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Thousands of nutrition professionals meet to share recent research in various areas related to the practice of dietetics, network, collaborate, and enjoy culinary shows and product tastings, and try out technological developments, such as learning modules that meet student, faculty, patient care and client service needs within the profession.

This year the Academy celebrated its 100th year anniversary of the association's existence. Celebrations and historical accounts of the progress made within the profession were shared in many of the breakout sessions. Our team secured one of the last historical accounts available at the show--a book discussing the role of blacks within the profession during the past 100 years.

Dietetic students attending this year's FNCE included Kayla Hall, Leighann Rice, Lindsay Goldthorpe and Holly Forbes, who are among our top dietetic students, who have participated in coveted summer programs in Spain, in sports nutrition working with the Green Bay Packers, and at a public health opportunity with Columbia University. These students participated in the dietetic fair, sharing information about Oakwood's dietetic programs. Holly Forbes was also awarded an Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Foundation scholarship for demonstrating professionalism, and that she is, and will continue to be, a valuable, contributing student and future practicing member of the profession.

Dietetic Faculty who attended included Dr. Jocelyn Peterson, Chair of the Department of Nutrition and Dietetics and Director of the Dietetic Internship Program, and Mrs. Teymi Herring, Dietetics Program Director.

The Academy celebrated its 100th year anniversary of existence. Lindsay Goldthorpe, Kayla Hall, Holly Forbes and Leighann Rice pause for a photo op at the commemorative FNCE sign.

School of Business Carries Out University Mission
by Samantha Champagne, secretary, School of Business

As a part of our Community Service Initiative, coordinated by Shaunda Roach, assistant professor of MIS, faculty members volunteer every month with Meals On Wheels at the Huntsville-Madison County Senior Center.

Meals On Wheels is a program that provides nutritious meals, Monday-Friday, year round to Huntsville seniors age 60 or over, who are unable to cook for themselves, and are primarily homebound. The meals include an entree, vegetable, fruit, bread, and milk. Volunteers deliver meals to the clients' homes between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. There is no charge, but a donation based on income is suggested. Menus are planned by a Registered Dietitian and the food is delivered in the Huntsville city limits.

During their first scheduled visit on October 12, Dr. Hyacinth Burton, Dean of the School of Business, and Samantha Champagne, Secretary for the School, delivered hot meals to eight different homes. Many of these people are elderly and need someone to help them. Some of the individuals live alone, others live with their pets or other debilitated family members. The experience was very heartwarming and eye-opening to go around serving the community. It really makes one realize how fortunate he/she is to be in good health and have close family members.

This activity ties in with Oakwood University's mission that we put "God First" with service to God and humanity. Those who are served are just looking for someone to show they care, and the School of Business is happy and more than willing to carry out this initiative in conjunction with Meals On Wheels.
Mental Illness Unaddressed in Black Families, says Oakwood Professor
by Ben Nandy, Anchor/Reporter - WZDX News

At a community meeting in Huntsville this past Sunday evening, social workers from local universities and health centers had the opportunity to inform and mobilize those who attended, as well as the 400+ who watched on Facebook Live.

Oakwood University's Social Work Chair Dr. Octavio Ramirez came armed with research to impress upon the audience that the odds are against black families struggling with mental illness.  Ramirez said black people are 20% more likely to have an unaddressed, undiagnosed mental illness. "It's a part of life that many people deal with," Dr. Ramirez said about mental illness. "It's when it gets out of control, there's a problem."   MORE
