Colloquium 2017

All sessions during Colloquium will be held in the McKee Business & Technology Complex.
Faculty and staff are preparing for the school's annual Colloquium scheduled for August 1-4, under the theme, "Delivering on the Promise: Oakwood University in the 21st Century."

President Leslie Pollard said that during Colloquium 2017, "We will continue our focus on a planned and God-directed future. The strategic planning sessions that we have had with each stakeholder group - administrators, faculty, staff, students, and alumni - underscores our intention to fully deliver on our promise of transforming students through biblically-based education for service to God and humanity across the next five years."

Pastor Debleaire Snell, senior pastor of the First Seventh-day Adventist Church in Huntsville, Ala. , will deliver the daily devotionals for all employees and retirees. Dr. David Richardson, Vice President for Spiritual Life and Missions, will organize intercessory prayer ministry teams across the campus as we go into 24/7 prayer for the mission effectiveness of our Oakwood enterprise. "We believe that in dependence on the grace and blessing of God, nothing will be impossible to us!" said Dr. Pollard.

Reports and presentations on specific direction and targeted purposes for the new academic year will be presented. Particular attention will highlight aspects of the Strategic Plan, updates on infusing Biblical Foundations in the curriculum, and progress on implementing the Career Pathways GEM-Connect initiative.

Oakwood Welcomes New Leader of Advancement & Development

Cheri Fisher Wilson, MA, CFRE, '82, has returned to her alma mater as Executive Director of Advancement & Development. Her guiding principle in raising funds is to fulfill student needs and honor donor wishes.

During a welcome luncheon yesterday, President Leslie Pollard said, "We are looking forward to supporting Cheri's leadership of the Advancement & Development Division."

Cheri has most recently served the United Negro College Fund as the area development director for Alabama and Mississippi. She has a wealth of experience in leading annual fundraising efforts, and fostering community engagement and collaborative partnerships by working with multiple diverse sectors to increase the resources and opportunities of the institution. Cheri earned a certificate in fund raising management (CFRM) from the Lilly Family School of Philanthropy at Indiana University/Purdue University Indianapolis, and the Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) credential.

After completing a B.A. degree in Elementary Education/Early Childhood Education at Oakwood College, and an M.A. degree in Special Education at La Sierra University, Cheri worked in education as an elementary general education classroom teacher, and later as a special education resource specialist.

When she and her family moved to Huntsville, Cheri served Oakwood University for eight years as the director of development, and a short stint as director of adult and continuing education.

More information on the fundraising activities of the Division of Advancement & Development will be shared in the coming weeks.

They receive training in academic instruction, and life skills such as time management, goal planning, team building, and identification of learning styles. Also included during the two-week immersion experience are advising, review and introductions to college level Mathematics, Biology, English and Chemistry. Life skill seminars include campus survival strategies, mentoring, introduction to dormitory living, etiquette, and conflict resolution.
