Healthy Campus Week 2017

Partnership for A Healthier America (PHA) launched its third annual Healthy Campus Week on Monday  as part of its Healthier Campus Initiative (HCI), a national effort to ensure college students have access to healthier environments during a time of profound change - a time when new habits are formed.

This week, P HA, along with Healthy Campus Week sponsors, Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI) and Target, will support campus partners as they create opportunities for students, faculty and staff to participate in on-campus fitness and wellness events, contests and more. "For thousands of college students across the nation, it's the first time they are making their own choices about food and lifestyle," said Nancy Roman, PHA President & CEO.

For one of the Healthy Campus Week activities at Oakwood University, Miriam Battles, customer care coordinator, shared her healthy lifestyle testimony, comparing her experience with cancer to being in a "Lion's Den."  Just as Daniel was thrown into a den of lions, Miriam was faced with the Diagnosis Lion, the Treatment Lion, the Financial Lion and the Employment Lion.

The overarching Bible promise that guided Miriam through her experience was Daniel 6:21a & 27, "My God hath sent his angel, and hath SHUT the lions' mouths, that they have not hurt me: He delivereth and rescueth, and he worketh signs and wonders in heaven and in earth, who hath delivered Daniel from the power of the lions."

Miriam shared that she was implementing some of the eight STANDOUT principles of health (sunlight, temperance, adequate rest, nutrition, drink water, outdoors, use physical activity, and trust in God), but not all eight of them. She stressed the importance of embracing ALL eight health principles because six or seven won't do.

God showed Miriam in so many ways that He was in control of the situation by providing her with His promises to sustain her; family, friends and co-workers to support her; financial blessings, including a 100% paid invoice from the Cancer Treatment Centers of America; and a cancer-free diagnosis.

Other activities for the week include the kick-off of the Calorie Burn III Weight Loss Challenge, a spin-off of the "Biggest Loser," where teams track how much weight is lost through the end of the semester; a creative expression coloring contest, to encourage patients at the Cancer Treatment Center of America; and a bread-making class.

During Healthy Campus Week, the Oakwood campus family will be sharing pictures on social media using  #HealthyCampus.
White House Initiative on HBCUs Names Oakwoodite as an All-Star

The White House Initiative on Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) announced last week its 2017 HBCU All-Stars at the Annual Summit hosted at the White House on September 18, 2017. Among the 62 All-Stars (pictured) is Oakwood student Jujuan Sanders

These distinguished undergraduate and graduate students recognized for their outstanding accomplishment s in scholarship, leadership, and civic engagement. This year's class of All-Stars are strong examples of the talent that HBCUs cultivate and excellent ambassadors of their respective institutions.

The All-Stars are appointed for one year to serve as ambassadors of the White House Initiative on HBCUs. The All-Stars provide outreach opportunities and communications to their fellow students about the value of education and the Initiative as a networking resource. Selected from a wide-range of applicants, the All-Stars came highly recommended from HBCU administrators and proved impressive beyond their resumes, transcripts and thorough applications.

"As a proud HBCU graduate, I am personally thrilled to congratulate this year's impressive class of HBCU All-Stars," said Omarosa Manigault, Assistant to the President and Director of Communications for the Office of Public Liaison.

Oakwood Alum to Help Raise Awareness

September is National Suicide Prevention Awareness Month, a time to share resources and  stories  in an effort to shed light on this highly taboo and stigmatized topic. The month is used to reach out to those affected by suicide, raise awareness and connect individuals with suicidal ideation to treatment services. It is also important to ensure that individuals, friends and families have access to the resources they need to discuss suicide prevention.
