Oakwood President Awarded Medallion at Alabama A&M

Prior to speaking to the 142nd graduating class of Alabama Agricultural & Mechanical University on December 8 at the Von Braun Center, Dr. Leslie Pollard, President of Oakwood University, was awarded the Presidential Medallion of Alabama A&M University, for "Influential and Innovative Leadership."

Dr. Andrew Hugine, President of Alabama A&M, presented the award on behalf of the Board of Trustees of Alabama A&M University.

"I am grateful to the entire team of leaders we have at Oakwood University. Each of us are beneficiaries of the generosity and self-sacrifice of an often-unseen cadre of committed workers. I thank them for their service and receive this on their behalf," observed Dr. Pollard. "God gets the glory and all the honor."

Also participating in the graduation ceremony was Dr. David Richardson, Vice-President Spiritual Life & Missions, who offered a powerful meditation for the Alabama A&M graduates.
YLAI Fellows Mentored at Oakwood

Global Ties Alabama recently hosted participants from the U.S. Department of State's Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative (YLAI) Professional Fellows Program in October and November 2017.

As part of the Fellowship, ten young business and social entrepreneurs from Latin America and the Caribbean traveled to Alabama, and built partnerships with local entrepreneurial organizations and companies.  For five weeks,  YLAI Fellows Constantine Hamilton from The Bahamas, and Roberto Haeussler from Guatemala, were mentored by Artis Sidney at Oakwood Farms. Fellow Karen Ramirez was mentored by LaVerne Walsh and Adam Moore of Thompson Hospitality.

YLAI Fellows also had the opportunity to learn from U.S. counterparts by participating in day-to-day operations at their U.S. host organizations or collaborating on a joint project. YLAI Professional Fellows developed stronger ties with other participants from Latin America and the Caribbean, as well as with their U.S. Fellowship Hosts. They will use the knowledge gained to contribute to social and economic development in their communities effectively.

The Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State funded this program. Global Ties Alabama is proud to work with grantee Meridian International Center, a premier nonprofit, global leadership organization headquartered in Washington, D.C. Meridian is also proud to partner with Atlas Corps and Entrepreneurs' Organization for this program. For further information, please contact the local program team at [email protected], or visit the YLAI website.
80 Fulbright Scholars Visit Oakwood University

(Correction and reprint to the November 29, 2017- InsideOakwood article)

Oakwood University Department of Communication, Global Ties Alabama, and David Person Media, LLC., hosted 80 Fulbright scholars on December 1, 2017, in the McKee Business and Technology Complex. The visiting scholars represented 46 countries and 66 U.S. universities.

Hosted by David Person and UNCF campaign co-chairs, Larry and Kim Lewis, owners of Project XYZ and BizTech, the talk-show style program covered the topics of innovation and entrepreneurship. Students who attended were able to learn current trends and changes in the business and technology fields.

Students in Dr. Rennae Elliott's OU101 class who attended the presentation were offered the opportunity to complete an extra credit assignment. Their comments included:

  • "What I liked about Mr. and Mrs. Lewis is that they have been able to reconcile their work with their family, and that they have the concern to train the new generation of young people to learn to invest," said Lauritano Mabila Amelia.
  • Taelyn Culberson obseved that passion and self-motivation are two very important factors to being a successful entrepreneur. Applying those characteristics to one's work will allow him or her to be able to think of every setback as a comeback. It will allow room for growth and resilience in one's business and personal life."
  • Jasmine Thornhill realized that she doesn't have to be a business major to benefit from  entrepreneurship, and that it can even apply in her field of study: biomedical engineering.
  • Although Giana Darville isn't planning to start her own business, she found the information extremely helpful to anyone pursuing a career in virtually any line of work. "Success does not simply visit the doorstep of those who wish for it, but rather is earned by those striving for excellence," she said.
