Oakwood's Response to Hurricane Harvey

The New York Times reports that floodwaters in southeast Texas continue to rise as a result of the slow-moving, record-shattering hurricane.  With hundreds of thousands of people under evacuation orders, shelters in Houston are filled to bursting with people who crave news about the safety of their loved ones and the state of their homes.

Oakwood University is not immune to this tragedy. Several of our students, faculty and staff have family in the areas that have been hit the hardest.

New Orleans native Dr. Leslie Pollard, President of Oakwood University, offered a statement of encouragement for all those affected by the storm.

This video explains one of the ways to support storm victims.
This video explains one of the ways to financially support storm victims.

We are asking the readership of insideOakwood to prayerfully consider helping storm victims financial giving. Oakwood has been in communication with the Southwest Region Conference to develop a channel through which we can give directly to their Community Services Department. Monetary contributions are the most useful ways of helping at this time. As you can imagine, it is very hard to make deliveries into areas hit by the hurricane. Additionally, there are strict regulations on what materials can be accepted. Non-monetary donations are frequently rejected because donors are unaware of the regulations.

We are asking you to give whatever you can to help our brothers and sisters who are suffering through this terrible ordeal. Even the smallest monetary donations can help. Please text the message txflooding to 71777 and follow the prompts in order to make your donation.

Special thanks to President Pollard, Chaplain Andrew Pileggi of the Office of Spiritual Life
& Missions, and Kenn Dixon, Director of Integrated Marketing & Public Relations, for the production of these video messages.
