This week, Oakwood University is hosting the South Central Conference for its 71st annual Camp Meeting, June 2-10.

Hundreds of Seventh-day Adventists attend this convocation for spiritual renewal and fellowship. Oakwood's campus has been the host camp meeting venue for the South Central Conference since 1946.

This year's camp meeting theme, "We Would See Jesus," is being addressed by guest speakers including Dr. Rupert Bushner, Elder Benjamin Jones, Jr., Dr. John Nixon, Sr., Pastor Ty Gibson, Pastor Tricia Payne, Dr. C. Wesley Knight, and Dr. Ivan Williams, Sr.

During the Ordination Service on Sabbath afternoon, June 10, two Oakwoodites are scheduled to be commissioned as ministers in the Seventh-day Adventist Church: Dr. Ifeoma Kwesi (left), associate professor in the Department of the Religion and Theology, and Chaplain Kimberly C. Oakwood's Healthy Campus 2020 Featured in PHA Annual Report

Oakwood University is under the Partner Spotlight in the 2016 Annual Progress Report of the Partnership for Healthier America.

Oakwood's Healthy Campus 2020 initiative guides the university's efforts to fulfill its commitment as a member of PHA's Healthier Campus Initiative.

For example, in addition to the student ambassador-led events during the school year, the university is continually working to revamp its cafeteria menu and update the offerings in its vending machines to include healthier options.

On February 9 of this year, the Healthy Campus 2020 initiative launched the Life Cycle program, housed in the lobby of the Eva B. Dykes Library. This programs makes ten (10) bicycles available for students and employees to check out for one day, with a current ID, similar to checking out a book from the library. The rider also receives a helmet and a bicycle lock.

The University's efforts are transforming the lives of Oakwood students, in terms of their attitudes about their personal health, as well as their eating choices and exercise habits. In a unique thank you card to program coordinator Dr. Shirna Gullo, graduating senior Farrah Melidor remarked, "I am healthier because of you and the Healthy Campus 2020 initiative!"

Oakwoodites Celebrate Harewood Promotion at Pentagon
by Victoria L. Joiner, Ed.D, assistant professor

Oakwood University alumnus Dr. Andrew R. Harewood has achieved another  milestone in the U.S. Armed Services by achieving the rank of Colonel in the Army chaplaincy. Nearly 100 family, friends and dignitaries celebrated the promotion at a  ceremony in the Pentagon's Memorial Chapel in Washington, D.C. on May 31, 2017.

Participants in the ceremony included the Honorable Sheila Jackson-Lee, Representative, from Texas' 18th District, Rear Admiral (Ret.) and Chaplain of the U.S. Senate Barry C. Black, Command Chaplain Lt. Colonel Milton Johnson, Lt. General Gwendolyn Bingham, and Brigadier General Fletcher Washington. Oakwood National Alumni President Dr. Cynthia Powell-Hicks and her sister JoAnn Powell Lightford represented their late father Col. (Ret.) Joseph Powell and mother Alice Powell during the ceremony.

OU alumna Janice Chandler-Eteme opened the program with a powerful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. Chaplain Barry Black's remarks became a powerful testimony of God's providence. Representative Jackson-Lee honored Harewood with a Congressional Resolution recognizing this milestone promotion by entering it into the Congressional Record. After the touching pinning ceremony with Dr. Karen Harewood and Dr. Powell Hicks, epaulets were placed on his uniform by the Harewood's four sons, Andrew, Jason, Aaren, and Jalon. The Oath of Office was given by Lt. General Bingham.

The Harewood family is an example of the best of Oakwood, as Harewood, his wife Dr. Karen Fleming Harewood, and two of their, Andrew and Jason, have graduated from this great institution. In addition to serving his country, Harewood is the senior pastor of the Ephesus SDA Church in New York and remains committed to serving God, family, church, and country.

Sherman Rogers' eye-opening article, titled "Occupational Licensing: Quality Control or Enterprise Killer? Problems That Arise When People Must Get the Government's Permission to Work," as its lead article for Volume 10, Issue 2.
